  1. I really want to know what you guys are smoking... it looks cheap as hell.

Whereas GiTS did a good job of mixing CG and cells (by using CG mostly for computer displays and such), the new 3D segments stand out because they look totally different than the rest of the film.

For those that haven't seen it, the only redone segments are the opening scene where Matoko jumps off the building and the scene where she's swimming, so it's clear they didn't want to do much more than just model her and some backgrounds. They also redid all of the helicopters in 3D... but no other vehicles. The whole effort makes no sense, as the added CG effects to the cell scenes look terrible, the 3D doesn't mesh and the whole thing just reeks of messing around with something that didn't need to be fixed.

It's far worse than something like the Star Wars Special Editions, where you could kind of justify by saying they didn't ave the technology back then or it didn't look as good... But truth is, GiTS looks better than just about any other modern anime film, and it sure as hell didn't need a bunch of extra CG cr*p to "modernize" it.

I would agree with you in that the CGI alone doesn't justify the whole movie, after all it's looks like the done the new CGI only for test the technology in preparation for the Sky Crawlers movie. But there's not the only additions inluded, they re-recorded the dialogs and even the have some variations from the originals, and the remastered music sounds even great, or did you make the anology with Star Wars because the sound were remastered in Skywalker Sound? xD

Anyway my point in this is that the CGI is cool, but it seems to me most likely you did a poor check in the material and anly focuses on the animation and obviously you dislike Oshii's work

  2. And hey! I'm no longer at the Sharon Apple concert. Too bad, really. Being a Macross II Surivivor isn't nearly as much fun.

So, now you are in a parallel universe? xD

    Boo hoo...sniff...sniff... sad.gif

My friends on my local general anime fanboard all hate Macross Frontier - and what's worse - mainly for the reasons I love it. They like the action sequences but are upset that instead of squashing all the bugs the bugs actually turn out to be ok kind of folks and everyone lives happily ever after thanks to the power of song.... they complain that too much time was spent on the love trianlge and not enough time killing people, and they don't like Ranka (and not in the same way as peple here playfully debate whos' songs are better - because they don't like any of the songs) ....

Boo hooo sad.gif ... sure is lonely apparently being the only person in a country of 40 million that actually like Macross Frontier ... all the more reason why it's cool to have this forum smile.gif

I have to ask, the guys of your local fanboard are teens? if the answer is yes I wouldn't be surprised

  3. That's a good idea. Here's the e-mail I just sent to them:

Greetings Big Bad Toy Store Staff and Management-

I am writing to you today to express my concern and dissatisfaction in regards to your recent decision to stop selling Yamato-manufactured Macross products at the behest of Toynami's request and/or threat.

As we have all learned through years of legalese and threats, Harmony Gold has yet to provide legal proof to their claim of ownership of the Macross franchise (a claim that has varied wildly from "worldwide rights [outside of Japan], to North American distro rights, and anywhere in between). In 2002, Harmony Gold made a similar attempt to prevent small online retailers from selling imported Macross merchandise based on the same claim. When some of those retailers obtained legal representation, Harmony Gold dropped any further attempts to enforce their claim. At the time, and since, representatives from Harmony Gold have provided, at times, wild and outlandish statements meant to back up their claim of Macross rights

Now, however, you are allowing a company to dictate what product you sell. While it may be true that Toynami products (of all brands) may sell more than the Yamato Macross products, your capitulation in this case has lost one infrequent (yet loyal) customer. Until such a time as you deny a company to dictate which products you sell, I will look elsewhere for the products that I used to purchase from BBTS.

    Thank you for your time,

    Jeff Sorley

In a world where money talks, this is the most rational thing to do

I still want to throw a DE on HG HQ xD

Still, the issue here is not the licences thing and conspiracy plots. Even here at Chile when a company request and/or threat another for sell his products in detriment of other one that company gets sued for a big bunch of money

  4. I thought that they still were the benchmark. Who has taken their place?

If there are no such websites yet, I would be astounded. Maybe its because a lot of the real old fashioned die hard trek fans are too old to understand the internets or can't get out of their bed in the nursing home.

    Taksraven

Well, in the local websites here the desscusion is how someone can be consider a geek or a pseudo tech fan if didn't know Star Trek.

  5. Sure...you get Mikimoto to do "Macross: The Origin," the character designer from Zero can do "Focker's Deleted Affair(s)," get some other big name character designer to do a side story called "Macross 2042," and then a bunch of no-name people to do a bunch of other comics that no one will really care about. It'll be GREAT!! :p

(Nah, I'm sure it'll be better than that...but still, I'm a little worried.)

I just hope that Macross doesn't end as a "flavored" franchise as Gundam with shows and merchandise À la carte
