  1. I never said that Star Trek had smooth continuity, and I did put the word history in quotes; granted that Enterprise has better self-contained continuity then the other incarnations, especially Voyager (it contradicted itself about every other episode).  However, there is an established canon that gets repeatedly trampled on Enterprise:  the portrayal of the Vulcans (somewhat ameliorated by the "Kir Shara" arc), a Vulcan in Starfleet  (Spock was the first),  Romulans with cloaking technology (The Federation was unaware of this until "Balance of Terror"), the Tholians (it is implied that the Federation knows nothing of the Tholians until "The Tholian Web"), The Farengi (although not named, it is hard to swallow that they would stay away from all Starfleet contact until TNG), Borg (unknown until TNG), and many other nits to pick.

A lot of those have been repaired (as you mentioned) or have plausible explainations though - like the Romulans, they don't know yet that they have cloaking devices to make ships invisible, they only know about their prototype holographic camoflague system, and Spock still was the first Vulcan in Starfleet since T'Pol just has some honorary commision thing.

The fourth season has taken much more notice of these kind of things. That's why upcoming episodes that will deal with the Klingon head ridges thing and the mirror universe still interest me.

People still watch Star Trek? The force tells me there's a disturbing lack of Star WARS in their lives.

No matter how far Star Trek has fallen, it hasn't sunk to nearly the depths Star Wars has. That universe is irreversibly ruined.

  2. For people who wrote the show off a long time ago, it's worth knowing that the fourth season has actually been by far the best season of the show.

It's just a shame it finally started tapping into it's potential when it was to late. I hated the first two awful seasons, but after this latest season I'm going to be sad to see it go.

  3. I hope they get hard time in prison.

I know some people try to justify giving these criminals money by saying that they get 'rare' or hard to obtain anime like Mazinger, but these parasites almost exclusively pirated Region 1 dvds.

Good riddance. Hopefully action against the other companies will follow.

  4. Miffs me off (ugh) that next week is a recap of the last 14....I HATE shows that do that, its so boring.  How many did SEED have? 4? 5?
Recap eps are only fair for those who aren't collecting the series on their hard drives or have missed 1 or 2 or even a chunk of episodes.

Seed had 4 which works out more or less as one at the end of ecah 13 ep season with one final reminder before the finale (which I still haven't seen)

I don't know what show you guys were watching because SEED did not have four recaps. It had two and a half.

First half of episode 14, all of episode 26 and most of episode 27.

  5. I'm all for copying. Once you buy it it's yours to do with as you please. If Animeigo doesn't like it, they shouldn't have sold it to me. That being said, I would never sell the copies but I've considered making copies to keep and selling the originals.

Pesonally I don't understand why people care so much about copyrights, unless they're the holders of such copyrights.

Because some people still have a functioning sense of ethics and aren't scum who rip off the companies who create and make available the anime we enjoy, you cretin.

  6. In February MegaHouse is releasing figures of Lunamaria, Mairin, and Stellar. I'm assuming these will be just like the Fllay, Cagalli, and Lacus figures they released last year.

They're up for pre-order ar HLJ, but no pics yet. Must see pics of the Lunamaria figure if anyone comes across any. That could be worth picking up depending on how it turns out.

    Here you go.

  7. To my knowledge the DVD for Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence comes out this week in North America. It seems that it will only be a subbed only version. Now, I'm not usually one for dubs, but I have found those for the GitS series to be pretty good. Does anyone know if there is a planned DVD Region 1 dubbed version of Innocence, or or will I have to do with the subbed-only?

Also, I believe that Samurai Champloo is being released on Region 1 DVD in the middle of January. Will these be sold by normal retailers like Best Buy and the like, or will it have a bit less mainstream release? Just wondering if I should start looking at where to order or if I will be able to just go to the local store...

    Thanks. :)

With Innocence subtitled is what you'll have to make do with. They made a specific decision to release it subtitled only and never made a dub.

Samurai Champloo will get a normal mainstream release.

  8. I know AnimEigo's are completely remastered, but how well does the R2 release compare to it? I don't know if Bandai Visual used a remastered print or not, but I have seen pics of the AnimEigo version and I can say that they're awesome. =)

    Check Macrossworld's own comparison - http://www.macrossworld.com/macross/video/..._comparison.htm

The R2's do not fare well.

While they do have, in my opinion, vastly superior color (Animeigo tweaked the colors far too much for my liking, and at times things got badly oversaturated) they are inferior in just about every other regard.

Less clarity, more film errors, scratches, poorer encoding, etc.

  9. First, is it complete? I mean, does it propose all of the footage from the OAV?

Second, is it well done? For example, one of our french version is purely horrible and seems to be a direct rip-off of the US Renditions master VHS tapes from 10 or 12 years ago, with big black rectangles to hide the US subtitles when some Marduks are talking (yeah, I swear... )

Third and finally, is there another (better) release available in DVD format than the Manga version?

It does contain all the footage from all the OVA episodes. The dvd is released as "the movie" and runs in one long sequence. The opening and end credits are cut off all the the middle episodes, but each episode retains it's eyecatch.

There's no huge black bars obscuring any foreign subtitles. The show is mostly soft-subbed, but does contain numerous hardsubs (music, Marduk language, etc).

Video and audio quality are ok. Nothing exactly great, but not terrible either.

As far as a better release... if you want English audio/subtitles, there isn't one. The R2 dvds are likely better video/audio quality wise.

  10. ?

The background music for the Macross Plus dub is identical, except for episode 4 where Magna had to improvise and replace the music with pieces from earlier episodes due to them not having the original masters available (I forget the exact reason why).

It wasn't intentional. The R2 dvd contains the English dub with the music for that episode repaired.

  11. I wish I could remember the source on that info.  I feel slightly less confident about it now that I've looked and can't find it on MAHQ or Bandai's site.  I remember it being posted to the GML back when the show was still in progress though, and info on the GML is typically pretty trustworthy.

Anyway, it wasn't really explained how mirace colloid is used by Forbidden, but it kind of makes sense if you think about it.  Mirage colloid turns Blitz invisible by bending light around it so that people can see through it as if it's not there.  So Forbidden, I guess, uses mirage colloid particles to bend light in a different way, deflecting incoming energy attacks away from the MS.

Of course, the problem with that is that a beam is actually made of high-energy particles, not light, but it certainly wouldn't be the first time sci-fi anime broke its own laws of physics.  So until there's a better explanation for Forbidden's beam deflection system, that's what I'm going with.

I don't remember seeing it on Shin's shield, though.  Perhaps I just wasn't paying close enough attention.  Can anyone point out a specific instance in which it occurs?

"Mirage colloid is a field of particles held together by a powerful magnetic field. When filled with prismatic particles, it serves as a cloaking device. In an alternate application, filled with beam-deflecting particles, it serves as a protective barrier on the two shields of the Forbidden Gundam"

Another application was that mirage colloid style technology is what was used to form beam saber blades, meaning all of them were redesigned to be Junius-7 Treaty compliant after that treaty was put in place.

With Shin's shield, when it activates in Force mode, it briefly appears to power up with a ring of energy emiting from the centre of the shield. Shin hit one of the other Gundams with the shield in the second episode and rather than just being a solid impact it appeared to deliver some kind of 'shock' for lack of a better term to the recieving suit.

However, it's definately not Forbidden style beam deflecting technology, at least not that has been seen - beam weapon impacts hit the shield directly just like they do to any other regular anti-beam shield.

  12. This, to me, reeks of a Harmony Gold attempt to remove potential competition for their new Robotech series

Uh... lets step back to reality here. SDF Macross is not competition for the Shadow Chronicles. Not now, not ever.

The target audiences of the two are polar opposites.

Dub it?  Again, who would want that?

Oh I don't know, maybe the vast majority of anime fans who don't watch subtitled cartoons perhaps.

  13. And how come Shin gets the newest Gundam when he's the worst of Minerva's MS pilots (except for perhaps Lunamaria)?

Uh, because he's actually a very good pilot?

Are you forgetting he fought multiple Gundams to a standstill as well as surviving relatively unscathed against a gunbarrel equipped mobile armour, in what was essentially his first mission?

I don't think Freedom still being Nuclear powered is in question. The core of the mobile suit as well as it's power reactor were still intact in the end, the main things needing rebuilding were the limbs. Given they just happened to have Freedom's dedicated support and repair ship on hand (Eternal) restoring it should not have been a major task.
