  1. i understand there were precedents based on what i was briefed on, but let me qualify that this pertains to mainland China and not HK, and this is from 5 years ago when there was a lot of news about allegedly state-sponsored hackers. my first stop upon arrival was the Beijing office to pick up the laptop (presumably "cleaned" and/or "hardened") and to attend a security briefing. stuff like limit wifi/bluetooth use, access the office network only when within the premises, and i was given a VPN to use should i want to surf on non-work stuff from the hotel.

i'm not an IT/security expert so it's not my place to say whether those precautions were warranted then nor if they are still applicable now. my unsolicited advise though is that it's good practice not to mix business and leisure specially when on business trips. not to say one can't have fun while on assignment, most companies will have a defined policy on what is fair/acceptable use of company assets and/or privileges. oh, and always have at least 2 sources of funds.

a month will breeze by, that's just 8 weekend days. despite HK's small size, that's still not nearly enough to explore its nooks and crannies. and there's Macau just a ferry ride away ;)

i was briefly in HK last month and i'm still discovering stuff (riding the tram was surprisingly fun). Gmail works fine and Youtube on mobile was faster than in my home country, lol!

Purples usually photograph reddder than reality, so I'll wait until I see it myself.

might be camera and/or settings dependent. in my experience purples photograph bluer than actual

  3. that cat girl looks really good. the eyes seem farther apart than usual, which works for that coy, feline expression.

at 1/6, it would be nice piece to display with the bunny girls, which are risque but safe enough to display in the open.

then i realized her cat tail wasn't attached to her costume..

By the way, I think by now we should know that the next time someone will go to a show or convention, he or she should bring a metric ruler to measure it instead of us here 'guess-timating'. You know like properly estimating it from the display to the ruler he or she is holding. So next time, Major Focker, please bring a ruler.

lol, i'll be glad to oblige and bring a ruler next Feb.

actually, i've been trying out a few camera ruler apps but haven't found one yet that doesn't require you to place a known-sized object in the shot. that could be problematic, since minders usually shoo you away when you get too close to the display.

agree with jenius that the price difference is still material enough to swing me towards Arcadia. but Fewture's Garland coming out soon (and way ahead of Arcadia) could still be problematic for me. i'm not sure if i'll be able to resist. i'm a latecomer to Fewture, but the few pieces i've bought so far have so thoroughly impressed me that i'm seriously considering tracking down their back catalog.

  5. thanks for the size info no3l.

i took a ruler out and tried to imagine 16cm vs. what i recall seeing at the Arcadia booth. it seemed a little bigger then. my memory is of course hazy, being hungry and in a rush at that time, but i think i remember thinking the drivers looked big for 1/24.

posting pic i took below, in case there's anything written there that mentions size.

  6. got 2 at NY, then added a Sheryl and 3 sets of the Regults w/ missiles.

in my haste, i didn't notice the Regults did not have a pay later option; so ended up pre-paying the whole lot :vava:

i'll probably end up cancelling my 2 VE-1s at amiami, but don't want to risk it until my other POs are shipped out.

  7. is there info on the actual heights of Fewture's vs. Arcadia's respective Garlands?

i recall Fewture's is supposed to be 1/15 scale  but there was some discussion on whether that's correct since they seem to have used a different anime height reference; which means the actual Fewture  toy may not be that much bigger than Arcadia's.

i'm looking to get the one which is closer to a proper 1/18, to display alongside my diecast car collection.

  8. dang, another must get. and since my Yamato is the heavy armament version, the Iowa should be too. 'coz it's only logical. or so i tell myself.

OT, i recently got a Marilyn Monroe 1/4 statue. since i now have a handful of 1/4 scale anime bunny girls (i was too weak to resist them despite my "no larger than 1/6" self-imposed rule), i thought it would be interesting to display Marilyn with them. that display will have to wait though until the house move.

...and since i now have my first Blitzway, it is only logical i PO'd their next release.. ;)

and down the rabbit, er, hole <cough, clears throat> we go

  9. thanks for the offer. in this instance though, it is a non-macross GK kit.

for macross, i am still on the prowl for the Arcadia Altira island base that was released with the mini-SDF1. haven't been lucky with the search terms, but admittedly haven't been as diligent in doing frequent searches either.

i've also been hunting Regults that came with this gashapon set from Kaiyodo. wanted a dozen but so far only got 5.

  10. yeah, i'm guilty as charged too. sometimes it seems like every other purchase is "unplanned" every time i dive into YAJ.

what prompted me to ask about this app though is that i found out recently that something i've been hunting for at least 5 years turned up last month and i didn't even know about it until after, when a random pinterest update coughed up a pic that lead me to the concluded auction.

it turns out it was when i was on holiday in Japan so i wasn't doing my usual internet searches. ironically, i spent quite a bit of time during that holiday doing a physical search of that item in akiba, nakano, and even wonfes.

i guess i'll try to recover my YAJ account. i had one set up a decade ago by a friend living in Japan. without google translate back then i basically just  ignored the weekly emails from YAJ and have long since forgotten the password. there's probably a password recovery function but i heard that these days it's via SMS, which i'm hoping is not the case since she might've changed numbers.
