  1. Not to mention, cold fuzion would be next to useless since it's the heat (energy) of the reaction that we want to use. Also, I wouldn't call it the product of SF, at least not real SF (remember, 'science' is part of the name).
  2. I don't know... I think Luke in the first movie made it more for rednecks than kids...
  3. ... real cool lookin. I hope EP 3 is so violent little kids run out of the theatre screaming. You know, that would actually be funny. After years of being accused of kiddy-fying his films, Lucas snaps and makes "3" a gore-fest.
  4. D'oh! One of those Kesslers should've been Kempf. Anyway, you got it! Oh, and I went with Wittenfield because that's what's given in the titles. Bitenfield is what they actually say, but that's because there's no 'v' sound in Japanese.
  5. Here's a link to A7's reveiw: http://www.macrossworld.com/mwf/index.php?...255&hl=planetes . He wrote it based only on ep. 1, so it's not a very fair look at the show, and I think his rating for the story is way out of whack.
  6. Let's play a matching game! Can you match the admiral with his correct flagship? Flagships 1. Salamander 2. Forseti 3. Königs Tiger 4. Barbarosa 5. Tristan 6. Jotunheim 7. Beowulf 8. Brünhilde Admirals A. Kessler B. Mittermeyer C. Wahlen D. Reuentahl E. Kessler F. Kircheis G. Wittenfield H. Lohengramm
  7. It's been discussed here before. It's a great series and I really need to catch up on it. I've gotten way behind on episodes.
  8. How about the lesson of advancing your tactics with technological changes or the one about relying on 'proven' methods often results in unnecessary death on the battlefield. Whether he's right or wrong, imode is the one who's actually applying history to this discussion. Just saying something happened in the past is meaningless. Don't site an example of something that happened nearly half a century ago and say that it's going to happen again and expect to be taken seriously.
  9. I think it looks pretty good. I think most of the complaints I've seen (skinny arms, flat nose, etc) could be made of the animated original.
  10. Now the question is, does any of this really make any difference in space? I'm no expert, but I think in space, Delta V would be the most important stat. You'd have to factor in fuel carried as well as mass and thrust to figure that out though.
  11. By that logic, Kawamori is Hindu as well, because Arjuna has a large amount of Hindu elements in it. Sorry, but you're falling into the falacy of judging an author's beliefs by the beliefs of his characters.
  12. Most Japanese follow both Shinto and Buddhism. Less than 1% of the country is Christian. They celebrate Christmas in the same way most Americans do: it's a purely secular and commercial holiday in which you spend a lot of money on gifts. They even have their own traditions for it such as eating fried chicken on Christmas Eve and eating cake on Christmas day. Wolfx is correct that Jesuit missionaries brought by the Portuguese did make a large number of converts in Japan during the 16th century. But, the Tokugawa kicked them out and made Christianity illegal in the early part of the 17th century. An interesting side note is that shortly after the Meiji Restoration, a small number of families in the hinterlands stepped forward and admitted that they'd been practicing Christianity in secret for the last 250 or so years prior. As for religion in Macross, I'd say that most of the characters were created without any thought as to their faith. This is fine, as far as I'm concerned, because it has no affect on the story what-so-ever.
  13. Just to nitpick, the TV series came later. The OVAs were the original.
  14. How about smart enough not to bother sifting through almost thirty pages. Once again, pinned mega-threads are a lame idea.
  15. You misunderstand. This is a very, very good thing. Manga did an incredibly craptacular job on the DVD release of this film. The translation was way off in places and my ten year old VHS copy has better video quality.
  16. Actually companies go after parody uses of their trade marks all the time. Not necessarily because they're trying to be dicks (though I think some of them are), but because that's how the system works. The person(s) making the parody then have to show that the trade marked item is being used in a humorous or satirical manner (it has nothing to do with trying to be official or not). For what it's worth, Weird Al always gets permission from the original artist before making a parody of a song. Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer.
  17. I take it that one of the Koreas is the country it's supposed to be licensed to? Cool that Mangle lost GR. Now if only another company would step in and grab it (along with Wings of Honneamise). Any confirmation of the rumors that they don't have Gunbuster anymore?
  18. It's not that they don't care; it's that they don't have to go after them. My understanding is that Japanese IP law is different from the US 'defend it or lose it' system. Someone using a trade marked character in their own fan work, or even a homage of that character in a commercial project does not constitute a threat to their ownership of the character. In the US, on the other hand, such things are threats to trade mark ownership. A company that doesn't defend against those threats is basically saying that they've given up ownership and anyone can use it. In this case, it's a mess because the two parties are in two different countries. The Berne Convention is very explicit in saying that IP belongs to the original owner, but I'm not sure it's 'defend it or lose it' or not. Plus, I'm not sure if this is a copyright or trade mark issue (two very different things).
  19. Not really. Area 88 comes the closest I can think of and it's set in the late 70's ~ early 80's. Maybe Yukikaze might be what you're looking for, but it really didn't impress me. Most shows with planes are commedies or romances with the plane stuff as secondary plot.
