I have to disagree. I think cultural forces are exactly the reason why many anime females tend to have caucasian features. As much as the Japanese are proud to be Japanese many of them go out of their way to look less Japanese. The greatest example of this is the eye surgery many Japanese women undergo to "fix" their "chinky" eyes. And let's not forget the whole "kogal" craze.

The movie is not being directed by Hayao-sensei but by his son, Goro. Earthsea is Ursula K. Le Guin's fictional world and the setting of some of her short stories and novels. Apparently the movie is based on the 3rd Earthsea novel The Farthest Shore. Here's a brief synopsis (of the novel) from wikipedia:
