Yeah, that's where I was thinking they could go without being a distraction. Good to see that two full rows fit in that space. I'll be adding basic kill markings to the next version of my set, but could also make them available as a separate set with more options.

Yeah, if it hadn't been for your photoshop mockup, I might have stupidly slapped them on the nose, then regretted it. Thanks again! :drinks:

    I like the kill marks.

Man, I wish all of my Valks were weathered. I can't do the half weathered half not thing so I'm not even going to start.:p

That said, I could do a weathered shelf..................................:pardon:

I know what you mean. I'm weathering just my DX VF-1. My YF-19, Hi Metal Monster and incoming YF-29 aren't getting the treatment. But they are a different scale, so different shelf amIright?

Yeah, those kill marks are pointless to me for the main characters. They would run out of room after one battle, especially Max.

Fair point, but I think that placement (am I right to credit @Anasazi37?) works well and is pretty subtle. It would be tacky to just fill up the nose haha.

Bandai just put a Roy on display in Akihabara with the Super Parts *and* atmospheric-flight-helmet-Roy in the cockpit. How very non-canon of them. :)

I've already picked up two of @Xigfrid's DX pilot sets on Shapeways so I can have both Roy and Hikaru in space flight helmets:

    https://www.shapeways.com/product/G8D52LFAX/pilots-set-for-vf-1j-dx?optionId=91611789&li=shops

From the site: This is a set of 4 pilots for the DX VF-1 in 1:48 scale.
There are 2 female pilots TV and DYRL styles and 2 male pilots TV and DYRL styles.
NB: You may have to sand a bit more the butt of the pilot before painting to perfectly fit you valkyrie.

@Anasazi37Couldn't you just get one set and paint the "TV male" as Roy and the (more slender but not noticeably busty) "TV female" as Hikaru? And do you paint miniatures yourself? My guy is not a fan of painting miniatures and declared the Hikki to Roy helmet change as "the worst part" or the customizations.

I get the 1J has a larger box because of the included stand.  But the box they shipped it in was about the same size as the box the 1A was shipped in.  And, while the difference in weight is about half a kilo (1.7Kg to 1.2Kg), according to Mandarake's own DHL estimate, that's only a difference of 300 Yen, not 3,000. That just doesn't add up.  Maybe at some point, I'll try them again just to see what happens.  It'll probably be a while for me, though.

Mandarake only has a few sizes of boxes. While it doesn’t matter much for EMS, DHL prices will jump suddenly beyond certain dimensions, and if it exceeds 4kg by a gram it gets even more insane.

The vf-1J first release includes the flight display stand .  That added weight and size to the item which will increase shipping cost.

There's brackets on weight, depending on how it's packed or the shipping box used. once it's over the amount it jumps to the next price bracket.

example: once it's over 2000g it's will cost much more. ..  even if it goes over by 1g.

example:  box size measurement can affect the price too since it's by Dem weight.

Yeah, I paid the same price for shipping back in April when I scored my lightly used one. YF-19 with all of its accessories cost the same amount to ship.

  7. So all three of those various parts-missing DX Valks sold for around 18k yen, which seems like kinda a good price on a 1J, a decent price on a 1S considering how it is close to complete, and a really bad price on a 1A (unless they have gone WAY up since May when I was last really hunting them). And WTF was he doing with the wing elevator flaps? I can understand losing an engine cover, of even a gun, but why even take the flaps off? Just using them as the world's most expensive toothpicks maybe?

Quick proof of concept with kill markings in three potential colors. They do make the cockpit area a bit more busy. The markings could be smaller, if necessary.

Is that the size of the smaller set of kill marks that comes with Kaki?

It depends. If you're willing to go through a proxy like FromJapan that can purchase it on an auction site and then send it to you, or go through Amazon Japan and have them ship it to a package forwarding service like Tenso, then no. Even with their fees, either option will probably be cheaper than Nin-Nin. Price range for domestic sales is currently ¥21,600 (lowest bid on Yahoo Japan) to ¥26,180 (Amazon Japan). If you're looking for direct overseas shipping from the seller, Nin-Nin's price isn't terrible, but it doesn't include shipping. They charged me $50 for FedEx shipping to the US for my Roy DX preorder, so depending on where you are and how fast you want it, you might be looking at $325 or more for the total bill. When Nin-Nin has an item in stock, I hear that their service is pretty good. Where they seem to run into trouble is with preorders.

It's funny when two members post the same advice at the same time :p

Thinking of getting a Kakizaki from Nin Nin. Is this a fair price currently? Thanks in advance for any advice.

As of a few days ago, you could do better after considering shipping through amazon jp (cause it deducts sales tax when you check out) or through Amazon JP and a proxy like Buyee or Zenmarket (the former is more convenient to use, the latter has slightly cheaper shipping options like FedEx)

I think Max is the type who wouldn't keep a score-board... at least not publicly.

if he did, his entire nose would be covered

I feel like the pilots don't apply them themselves or anything, it's more like something the Skull Squadron ground crew would do to boost morale.

So...do I need to create a supplemental decal set with kill markings and maybe some other stuff? I'm working with another MW member on a set of kill markings for 1/72 kits. Those could be easily sized up to 1/48. Simple silhouettes at the moment, covering a wide array of enemy mecha.

I mean I would want some B)) and another member is looking to turn a Kaki into a Max 1A maybe, so would need a pair of big 013 and probably 2LT rank/name? And while we are at it, maybe a pair of big 011 and and the Hikki ranks? In for a penny in for a pound right?

  13. 31 minutes ago, tekering said:

No, there isn't.  I don't know why they bothered to number those decals.

    Water slides.

Thanks for answering my questions! You figure there are enough kills for 4 Valks? Looks like they go in matching sets on both sides right? Except any of the sets had too many kills for Kaki himself :p

  14. So here is a question for anyone who already has a Kaki in hand. Is there anything in the manual in regards to decal placement? Figured that there might be a diagram that goes with all of the numbers. I am particularly interested in the enemy kill marks, and wondered if any were assigned to specific pilots. Any shot of that manual page if it exists would be much appreciated :D also are they water slide decals or just stickers? Thanks!

Those Amazon deals are the best I have seen. I picked another up through Buyee but the price only made sense because I had a bunch of stuff bundled anyway. I can pretend I didn't pay shipping.:D

    I often pretend that :P

No no, that person is saying if you go over 5G's (the skull is over the 5G) of sustained acceleration, you'll die.

Hahaha, well at least THAT makes sense! And that's true unless you are accustomed to it like Roy and Max :D
