  1. The Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) announced on Monday that it has named anime creator and director Shoji Kawamori as one of 10 co-producers of Osaka's Expo 2025. Eight of the producers will each develop a focus area that follow the World Expo's theme: "Design Future Society for Our Lives." Kawamori is working on a focus area that revolves around "making the connections of all 'life' living in our universe, ocean, and earth to protect and nurture one another."

Expo 2025 is scheduled to take place from April 13 to October 13, 2025.

This will be the second time Osaka has hosted a World Expo after Expo '70, 55 years earlier. Kawamori visited Osaka's first World Expo when he was still in elementary school, and he credited the event with inspiring his lifelong exploration of world culture, science, and science fiction.

The Expo's other nine producers are planner and producer Masaru Ishikawa, architect Sosuke Fujimoto, biologist and professor Shinichi Fukuoka, award-winning film director Naomi Kawase, broadcasting writer Kundo Koyama, roboticist and professor Hiroshi Ishiguro, musician and mathematician Sachiko Nakajima, media artist Yoichi Ochiai, and professor of medicine Hiroaki Miyata.

Kawamori is perhaps most famous for being a key creative planner in The Super Dimension Fortress Macross anime series. He designed most of the franchise's iconic transforming "variable fighter" mecha, and oversaw most of the main installments in the franchise, including the latest, Macross Delta.

Kawamori has also created the Aquarion, AKB0048, and Arjuna series, and most recently was chief director on Jūshinki Pandora at Satelight, the anime studio for which he serves as a board director. He has contributed mechanical design work to Patlabor: The Movie, Patlabor 2: The Movie, Eureka Seven, Outlaw Star, Ghost in the Shell, and more. He is credited as the original creator of The Vision of Escaflowne, Basquash!, and Nobunaga the Fool. He has worked in anime production as a director, screenwriter, mechanical designer, and storyboarder.

Outside anime, he designed one of Sony's Aibo robot dog variants and contributed to the designs of Takara's Diaclone Car Robot toys, which eventually became Optimus Prime, Prowl, Ironhide, and other toys in Hasbro's Transformers line. His game contributions include the original mechanical designs for the Armored Core franchise and the Devil Breaker weapons in Devil May Cry 5. Small Worlds, the company behind the world's largest indoor theme park of scale miniatures, appointed Kawamori as its chief creative officer.

The World Expo is held every five years and can last in for up to six months in their host city. The themes of World Expos are designed to raise awareness of and find responses to universal challenges of our time. Milan, Italy held the most recent Expo in 2015 with the theme "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life.” Dubai, UAE is hosting the 2020 World Expo, which the BIE General Assembly postponed to 2021 due to the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

Not exactly electronics, but anyone knowledgeable about binoculars?  I know just a little; what the numbers mean when they say something like 8x25, the difference between roof and Porro prisms, etc, but not enough to feel like I'm making an informed decision.  I'm looking for something I can use in variety of situations (camping, birdwatching, and a little stargazing), but something I'll use so infrequently that I can't justify going over $100.  I'm thinking 10x42 should be good enough.  I've got three recommendations, but they each have their pros and cons that's making choosing between them (or finding another comparable alternative) a bit of bear.

The three I've been looking at are

    Nikon Aculon A211

    Bushnell H₂0

    Celestron Outland X

but like I said, I'm not married to any of these three and I'm open to good alternatives.  Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Without looking at specs normally I would choose Nikon for the quality control, but the other 2 seem to claim being waterproof and fog proof so I'm not so sure about Nikon anymore. Whichever you choose maybe just make sure of the return policies if the product turns out to be defective.

if you ship via Fedex or DHL and the shipment is taxed by customs upon arrival, Fedex/DHL will collect any tax due from you when they deliver at your door if the seller hasn't already charge you tax deposit upon purchase (eg. Buyee and most other sellers like HLJ/HS/Amiami). if the seller already withheld tax (eg. Amazon JP charged you a tax deposit), then likely Fedex and DHL won't collect any tax from you unless there was an additional assessment by customs. for all other shipping methods (including EMS, ironically) you will need to pick up and pay tax personally, except if the seller already withheld tax and customs deemed it sufficient.

Thanks that cleared that up for me. I'll wait a bit see if there's any opening from HLJ etc.

AmazonJP tends to be very conservative in their tax estimation, typically more than 50% higher than what the final tax ended up being in my experience. they do refund the difference though. unfortunately, that also incurs some forex losses as the conversion happens twice - your payment and then the refund.

the worst thing about this however, is that there's a fairly good chance that the customs officer looking at the import declarations will either simply take that higher tax estimate as fact (ie. no refund then from Amazon), or worse, include that tax withheld estimate as part of the landed cost (ie. part of taxable amount) -- essentially a tax on a tax . it doesn't happen often, but it can and has. so for my bigger purchases, i usually route it to consolidators/forwarders like Buyee so that actual taxes are computed upon arrival, rather than bloatedly estimated prior to shipment. domestic Japan shipping is normally free anyway for big companies like Amazon; so there's no loss there except time/delay.

So what happens if it gets taxed? Do I pay Buyee or DHL (this is my preferred option) or do I have to go pick it up and pay in person? With Covid-19 around I don't want to go out (yes I think it will still be a concern next year.)

  5. This is not in limited quantities right? It doesn't ship to my address, so if I really want to order now I'll have to use a proxy. I could wait, but I don't wanna miss out too.

btw, i've just realized that the DX Voltes is about 1/160 scale, ie. close enough to N-scale (1/150) train stuff ;)

Too bad I don't have space for doing such sets. One thing I wish I had a big house...

according to NY shipping calculator (JPN to PH): EMS - 8900 JPY, SAL - 5700

Amiami/HS/HLJ shipping would probably be about 10-20% cheaper

also note that when buying stuff >$200, AmazonJP will also compute for import tax if destination is PH, and they have a tendency to overestimate on the tax.

you might be better off getting a local PO. there's a few of them still ongoing (Php 36-39K). the risk of course is that some of these locals might not actually receive enough stock from Bandai. the most reliable is Greattoys, but their PO is priced at 39k PLUS shipping. i would have placed with them otherwise.

the way i see it, my PO from Amiami would probably be 56k+9k = 65k JPY or about 30k Php. if it gets taxed upon import, that will run up to 36k. so i went ahead and placed a local PO at that price.

IF my Amiami order is not taxed by the customs guys (it still happens, i just picked up my Fewture Garland last week sent from Amiami and it wasn't taxed), and/or the 9k JPY assumed shipping cost is less than expected, then i potentially could save as much as Php 8k over the local PO, or at worst just price parity.

at this point i probably should be saying that i will then sell one of them, but that's probably not going to happen

I was about to order last night and Amazon JP slapped me with 23k+ yen import fee! Info says they will refund it but the total amount was too much for my credit card :cray:

I don't have any experience with local PO, I'll have to do some research. But at this big amount, I'm inclined to go with my usual suki sellers. I'll also probably check out US stores (as suggested), though I'm not in a hurry anyway.

Just pre-order on Amazon.co.jp as they have a pay later option.

Or if you're willing to wait, look for stateside websites to have it like BBTS, ChosenPrime, TheToySource, etc. This isn't a Macross item so there are other distribution channels available.

Thanks! That's a jaw-dropping 4k+ pesos for the shipping hahaha. But of course I've spent already thousands in shipping fees just in this toy hobby alone (not to mention on books and other stuff). Hmm let me just re-align the items I budgeted in advance for my Xmas bonus...  :cray:

If you want action stuff, maybe Enen no Shouboutai?

Theres a second season starting up in a few days, it's pretty solid Shounen Jump stuff with some dark metaplot.

If you prefer your fights to be more psychological, there's always Gleipnir, which is the best trash.

And then there's Tsugumomo, which is just on the safe side of porn, but with pretty damn good fights. The manga illustrations are downright amazing.

Ok, saw Gleipner eps 1-2 but it seems a bit too violent for watching out in the open (family members passing by). I'll just save it for later. Which rules out Tsugumomo...

So I went old school and am watching Yu Yu Hakusho

    Preorder date:  July 3.

    Release date:  December 2020.

    Price:  59000 JPY.

Sh!t I don't log in for a few days and I miss this! Damn you Bandai

How much is the shipping for DHL/Amazon JP? I wanted to go with HLJ but it's order stop now @_@

I really don't know that much about it.  Maybe someone more knowledgeable about it will enlighten us.  Apparently the game when it first released was revolutionary for its time.  It combined many of the popular game type together.  It was part robot combat, dating sim, etc.  But that's about all I know about it.

Oh so that's why it had a boring MC guy and the ladies were blushing red...

Thanks. I'll just avoid that franchise from now.

So I just finished a rewatch of Kimetsu no Yaiba, was looking for some more recent fight-filled stuff. Is Re-Zero any good later? I tried to watch a  few eps but I get turned off by the repetition (redoing the day all over again). (Also found KonoSuba funny but not up for a rewatch of it.) If not I'll search my done anime for rewatch candidates.

So I am finally getting around to watching Sakura Wars The animation.    Or whatever they are calling this last installment.

I'm not sold on it,   I don't like the CGI, and they changed the character designer and things just feel off.     I am also willing to bet they blew most of their animation budget on a very Gundam like launch scene.

It's been some time since I have gone back over this title, so my memory is kinda sketchy but I hope this first episode isn't the Best episode.

What is the primary appeal of Sakura Wars? I've tried to watch the anime (old and new) and I just seem to lose interest in the characters. The mecha were the main draw but I just can't continue watching an anime if I don't care for the characters.

Haha I'm not worried since normal deliveries are disrupted right now anyway...Maybe Mikimoto saw Covid19 coming?

I picked up this print edition, which is a collection of the Seikai no Monshō light novels.

    https://www.amazon.com/Crest-Stars-Volumes-Collectors-light/dp/1718350708

Not sure how it compares to the ebook translation, but JNC is the publisher and I've read that a similar collection is due for Seikai no Senki.

Might be out as soon as 2021? That would be cool.

Mm. The anime only touches upon points of the written story, although it was nice to see the Battle of Goslauth play out on screen.

Anime is a lot better action-wise, because it's been condensed or details added. As for print I'm holding off on buying. Hopefully shipping/economy goes back to normal next year, I haven't been in the mood to buy anything physical from overseas since March.

Also if you got the Banner print book, could you compare Lafiel's words there with the anime (last lines in Banner OVA, the one after the meal with Till and his wife)? The anime line was so different from the translated one, but the anime line was spoken in English (in the JP version). I actually prefer the anime line, made more sense to me.

  15. Lol I love the "space elves in spandex". The POV is biased but that was how the author intended to write it--from the POV of the 2 main characters who are of course, Abhs.

Currently JNovel Club is putting out the English translated ebooks (with eventual print editions). I've got all the ebooks out so far. Translation isn't 100% flowing but I support it since I want to know what happens in the later books. There were fan translations before but they were scrapped eventually.

Looking at the pictures I am really envious of those who got the art/design books. Of course at the time they came out I was probably oblivious to its existence and would never have bought them anyway.

  16. Covid has really f*cked up business, just imagine the lost sales due to shipping difficulties. I myself have stopped ordering stuff from overseas, fearing that packages will get stuck if a lock down/quarantine is imposed. I'm hoping things improve by the 4th quarter as there are some gunpla I want to order. On the other hand, I got extra $$$ but they will be spent on house fixes etc. Sorry Bandai, HLJ, NY, Amazon
