  1. F-35s are nearly dead in the water now. The Development has turned into a monumental farce. The Per Unit costs have gone from USD68-75Mil to USD122Mil each and its not living up to its claims on fuel loads, range, weapon loads, Angle of Attack, or WVR dog fight performance. Typhoon and Rafale are matching it and beating it in practically all realms and the New Russian Terminators can pick up stealthy fighters out to 90km away so the advantages of the F-35s design are already null and void. They come at a cost of fuel load and weapons load so its on the back foot. The Typhoons Off Bore target lock system is a MASSIVE force multiplier now its been tested with the Meteor AAM and passed with flying colours along with the ASRAMM and the IRIS-T which can pull 60G turns to engage tailing fighters. Canada is about to jump ship on their order for F-35s and are seeking a new option. The VSTOL version has really hit the skids with untold safety issues.
  2. When you get a batch of new anything military you get a handful of training versions, be it weapons, aircraft or LAVs so when the VF-11 was delivered to units, a handful of 2 seaters for conversion purposes would also be delivered. You were sent to the manufacturer for training up as a trainer then on return to your unit you became the Instructor and took the rest through FAM cses (Familiarisation Training and Conversion/Qualification Courses) to sign them off on competent use of the equipment. Its a fun holiday away from the Green and a perk of the job and rank (I got to go to Canada for mine). So the VF-11D would have been purpose build and the VF-11 Thunder Seeker with the windows would have been the converted/modified unit.
  3. Had a moment of doubt when I remembered the SV-51 is WAYYYYYY bigger that any of the VFs and it maynot fit in the display case. Slapped it together quick and luckily it DOES fit.... ones the wingtip launchers are on its only JUST fitting but it fits! And the magnetic rods hold it upside down just fine so thats another tick in the box. Painting on the SV will begin tomorrow.
  4. I need on in my hall display... now show us how to make a VF-30 Chronos in 1/72 and you skills are complete!
  5. How bizarre that this photo should appear while I was looking at my SV-51 kitset... The writer that picked the USSR/Israeli Anti UN coalition in Macross Zero must be a clairvoyant
  6. yeah.. see that requires forward planning and a concern for personal safety and comfort...
  7. run the network and security cables under the house for that reason
  8. The best bits are the jet nozzle ribbing details, the fuselage wing space filler, the backpack vent blades, the blade aerial blades and the twin leg lights.
  9. Did the unfun task last night and went into the roof space to lay the cables to all the paneling. Kiwi houses have lower angle roofs with lots of bracing, lots of Fibreglass insulation and a lot of heat trapped up there. Would rather spend all night in the rain and cold in an OP on a windy hillside than spend 10mins up there. Found some Adafruit Unlatched relay boards for $11NZD each and will have one on each pair of panels to switch them on at intervals. All be controlled from an Arduino Uno Board and triggered by a PIR sensor in the hall ceiling.
  10. Add them in the build up and paint along with the rest of the model. They add finer detail for panel lining and relief on areas that may have been left devoid of detail otherwise (tailpipes and super pack exhaust areas on VF-1s) or they add parts that were never there but should have been (cockpit controls, radio aerial fin blades, rear fuselage to wing filler panel on VF-1s).
  11. It was an old unused cross ways hallway. I split it in half and the PC gets a fan cooled room that's sound proofed and the other side became a walk in wardroom for the guest room. Still need to get the wallpaper printed (some sort of Above The Clouds theme wallpaper) and finish the painting. Its on the list.
  12. Yeah I'd guess they'd continue to grow and the carapace harden and grow darker with more vibrant "tattoo" patterning with age. The middle sized ones would be the cost effect ones but remember to keep the horror of a biomechanical monster like a Tyranid bio titan. So some size and power and menace would be ok
  13. 30m... even though its going to be crippling. Second option is the next size down as long as its still bigger than the Valkyrie.
  14. Raced home at Lunchtime after getting the call the prototype cover was ready... its a perfect fit!
  15. "It's always been a funny little in-joke that the -9 VFs have sword names and forward-swept wings... the sole exception being Rod's YF-29B Percival." SIR Percival was one of King Arthurs Knights of the Round Table and swung a sword...
  16. Progress on the display boards Made some Ali lens shrouds, Acrylic lens covers and used frosted clear tint over that to make them diffuse. Plug fitted behind each panel. Loom runs in the ceiling cavity and down into the PC room to the wall mounted transformer. Wired in pairs across the hallway so they come on in pairs down the length of the hall. Made the 6mm diameter acrylic rods, 3 for each Fighter, with one 5mm N45 Rare Earth magnet in each tip. The fighters get the same magnet embedded in their landing gear bays. One Häfele LOOX Lighting system transformer powers them all. Everything is test fitted for now and being stress tested tonight to see how much heat is generated. Wiring still the be sorted and hidden.
  17. Nothing gets the glue off once its set and the tapes gone flakey. Apart from mechanical abrasion. Had dome on a window frame and no solvent I tired would remove it so have to buff it off with a rubber wheel in a drill.
  18. damnit... now I'm going to have to mess with one! It looks too good not too. The camera windows behind the instructor need to removing though. I'm sure those are the race camera ports for the TV coverage.
  19. If you are after magnets, look for ones with a Field Strength rating of N45. They are the strongest off the shelf Rare Earth magnets you'll find and are pretty cheap if you shop online. I just got qty 40 of 5mm diameter by 3mm high ones for $10NZD for my hallway Valkyrie displays. If I have one on a Perspex stick and one on the plane, when they are joined in attraction they are rated to hold 1.3kg! And I have 3 Perspex rods holding each Valk! Keep them away from the kids and pets though as if they are swallowed they can be fatal and a painfully messy way to go. Account for every one and store the rest securely.
  20. hahah just remember masking tape goes hard and flakes with time, leaving behind the glue...
  21. Because I come with a brain. They dont like that.
  22. well in our chosen sport not being at to be hindered by pain and discomfort is advantageous, same as it is for me as a soldier. Can't live in a bubble and lives not a journey its a Rollercoaster ride, and we are loving every minute of it.
