  1. M.D. Geist: Collector's Series (M.D. Geist: Director's Cut + M.D. Geist II: Death Force) ( M.D.ガイスト 1-2 ) Nippon Columbia/Denon, 1986/1996 U.S. Manga Corps, 1992/1996, 2002; ADV Films, 2009 Directed by Koichi Ohata (Gunbuster, Ikki Tousen) (M.D. Geist originally directed by Hayato Ikeda) Rated 16-Up for extreme violence and gore, nudity and profanity. M.D. Geist (装鬼兵MDガイスト) In the distant future, mankind has colonized other planets in the universe. While many planets lived in peace, one planet has been ravaged by decades of war. Geist, an enhanced soldier, wakes up from his cryogenic sleep to engage in another war. This time, to help the army stop the planet's central computer from activating a doomsday device. M.D. Geist II: Death Force (装鬼兵MDガイスト2) After unleashing the Death Force machines, Geist has kept himself busy by dismantling them one by one. But now he faces a formidable opponent in the form of Krauser, another enhanced soldier who has aligned himself as the only savior of mankind. An instant flop in Japan in 1986, M.D. Geist was picked up by U.S. Manga Corps in the early 1990s as the company's corporate logo. Because of their obsession with Geist, U.S. Manga Corps gave creator Koichi Ohata (Aim for the Top! Gunbuster, Genocyber) a fat paycheck to refine the OAV and produce a sequel. The results can be found in this DVD package. Cast Norio Wakamoto (Coach in Gunbuster, Chiyochichi in Azumanga Daioh) as M.D. Geist (original 1986 version) Kazuhiro Nakata (Ron in Outlaw Star, Bear in .hack//) as M.D. Geist (Director's Cut and M.D. Geist II) Fumi Hirano (Lum in Urusei Yatsura) as Vaiya (original 1986 version) Rica Matsumoto (Jim in Outlaw Star, Aoi in You're Under Arrest) as Vaiya (Director's Cut) Rica Fukami (Myung in Macross Plus, Minako/Sailor Venus in Sailor Moon) as Vaiya (M.D. Geist II) Akio Nojima (Aaron in Armored Trooper Votoms, Alexander in Eureka Seven AO) as Kurtz (original 1986 version) Unshou Ishizuka (Jet in Cowboy Bebop, Guld in Macross Plus) as Kurtz (Director's Cut) Kaneto Shiozawa (1954-2000) (Rei in Fist of the North Star, M'quve in Mobile Suit Gundam) as M.D. Krauser Story: F What story? All I see is brainless, gratuitous violence. Animation: D M.D. Geist: Director's Cut has crude, low-budget OAV animation, and the colors of the added footage do not mix with the old footage. M.D. Geist II has cleaner artwork, but suffers from, well, lack of animation. Roughly 80% of the OAV consists of just still shots. And you'd think U.S. Manga Corps would spare no expense on their corporate mascot... Soundtrack: D- Bad enough that you see bad animation in M.D. Geist. Worse is that you have to put up with some cheesy music to go with it, along with some crappy songs about the guy. I feel sorry for the great Hironobu Kageyama (Dragon Ball Z, Mazinkaiser), who recorded the theme songs. This is, by far, the worst original Japanese soundtrack for any anime. Sub vs. Dub Quite frankly, the voice acting is laughable. And I'm talking about both English and Japanese versions. DVD Extras: B Apparently, U.S. Manga Corps still worships this title. In 2002, they released the Collector's Series version of this DVD, phasing out the mediocre Image Entertainment version. With that in mind, U.S. Manga Corps went all-out by remastering the picture quality. (Wow - M.D. Geist II was done in 1996 and the quality's already deteriorating?) Also included in the two-disc set are the following features: Commentary by creators Koichi Ohata/Riku Sanjo (In Japanese) Alternate angles (using the graphic novel published by CPM Manga) Storyboards Art gallery Geist Rider Scrapbook - A look at the customized Harley Davidson bike inspired by the anime A really, really stupid music video So far, Netflix sent me disc one only. From what I've read, disc two just has more artwork from Ohata. And I have absolutely no time to view that. The Bottom Line U.S. Manga Corps needs a new corporate mascot. I'll take the Geist Rider, though. On a side note, imagine if Central Park Media decided to produce a live-action M.D. Geist movie. It would probably star Dolph Lundgren as Geist.
  2. This definitely isn't the final version, as I will be polishing the edges and time adjustments. I'm hoping at least to export it to a Flash animation for Shawn to use.
  3. On the subject of fansub groups: Triad - It's common knowledge that nobody's perfect, but the Triad (NewLife Anime, Ishin Digital and Anime-Fansubs) are pretty close. If you've seen the Azumanga Daioh fansubs, you'll know what I mean. I have yet to see a major flaw in any of Triad's fansubs. Current choice for Gunslinger Girl, Narutaru, Popotan and Ultra Maniac. AnimeOne - They weren't exactly perfect with Macross Zero. Along with most of the other fansub groups, AonE's translation of Sara's song "Arkan" was wrong. Also, on episode 2, they used the word "Battloid" instead of "Battroid." Still, they're very respectable. Recent downloads include Wonderful Days, Peace Maker Kurogane and Sentou Yousei Yukikaze. Rice-Box - Not as good as the Triad, but up there. Downloaded majority of Stellvia from them. Anime-Keep - I've been getting a lion's share of fansubs from them. Their translations and subtitles are very consistent and easy on the eyes. They're currently my choice for Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu, Scrapped Princess, Grappler Baki, Onegai Twins and Maburaho. I'm just surprised that they decided not to fansub Macross Zero. Infusion - I was impressed with their Macross Zero and Lupin III fansubs. But right now, they don't have titles I'm interested in. Other Fansub Groups Worth Mentioning Anime-In-Action (GaoGaiGar, Macross 7) Hikari no Kiseki (Tiny Snow Fairy Sugar, Bottle Fairy) HQA (Air Master, Urda) Ishin Digital (Green Green, Asagiri no Miko) LightShock (Metal Armor Dragonar) NewLife Anime (Tsukihime) NYO Coalition (Di Gi Charat Nyo) Solar Fansubs (Gundam EVOLVE, RahXephon OVA) #TV-Nihon (Kamen Rider 555, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon)
  4. I like EVA, but RahXephon is better.
  5. Just thought I'd share with you something I animated for my 3D class. http://areaseven.net/macross/mwlogo01.mov
  6. In Read Or Die, "Miss Deep" is a clone of which famous World War I figure? (Bonus: state the person's real name.)

  8. Just finished watching episode 3. This one focuses on another girl by the codename of "Rico." And this is a rather sad episode. Can't wait for the other episodes. BTW, which fansub are you guys downloading? I'm currently watching the Triad version.
  9. Yeah, I was wondering about that -nyo. Especially since Bandai Visual has the current video rights -nyo. BTW, I checked out the official site, and Piyoko is in the current series along with Rik, Ky and Coo -nyo.
  10. Did anyone notice that the BGM played during the Bonta-kun raid scene sounds a lot like the Terminator theme?
  11. I've had my DVD since 2000 and I wasn't too disappointed by it. Pros - Excellent video and audio transfer. - Dolby 5.1 surround. Cons - Not available in widescreen format. - Severely lacking on extras (just an interview with soundtrack composer Vince DiCola).
  12. I'm a fan of old-school '80s OAVs, but until now, I have yet to see Fight! Iczer-One. Has anyone here seen it? Is it worth watching?
  13. VF19 actually has the next question, but I'll answer this one. 1. Well, it's been at least 10 years since I've seen the OAV, so I can't really answer the first question. 2. Buaku used "Ahhan," flat plastic plates that expand when stepped on.
  14. Episode 13 was completely off-the-wall comedy. The series should have more Bonta-kun, though. "Fu-mo fumo-fumo-fumo fumooo... Fu-mo fumo-fumo-fumo fumooo. Fu-mo fumo-fumo-fumo fumooo... Fu-mo fumo-fumo-fumo fumooo. Fumo-fumo! (Fumo-fumo!) Fumo-fumo! (Fumo-fumo!) Fumo-fumo! (Fumo-fumo!) Fumo-fumo! (Fumo-fumo!)..."
  15. Time limit expired over a day ago. Post another question, VF19.
  16. Yeah, we've been getting a lot of that lately: Blood: The Last Vampire Metropolis (if you're a Tezuka purist) Spriggan Wonderful Days (yeah, I know it's Korean, but the animation is gorgeous)
  17. He was found dead in Stevie Richards' home in Florida. Reports say he choked on his own vomit, which is a common symptom of drug overdose.
  18. Binzume Yousei ~Bottle Fairy~ ( 瓶詰妖精 ) GENCO/XEBEC/TV Kanagawa/King Records, 2003 Geneon Entertainment, 2005 Directed by Yoshiaki Iwasaki (Love Hina, Mao-Chan) Based on the manga by Yuiko Tokumi Running Time: 12 minutes per episode Rated 3-Up. Enjoy the show. Kururu, Chiriri, Sarara and Hororo are four fairies living in bottles on a desk of a high school boy they call "Sensei." While their sensei is away, they try to imagine what the real world is like, based on what they learn from Tama-chan, a misinformed elementary school girl living next door. Story: A- When I thought A Little Snow Fairy Sugar was over-the-top in the kawaii factor, I didn't expect any other fairy anime to be equal. (Yes, I have yet to see Omishi Magical Theater Risky Safety.) But Bottle Fairy comes pretty close. It's Sugar meets Azumanga Daioh as you have the fairy Hororo acting a lot like Osaka-san. Animation: A- While it's animated by XEBEC (Martian Successor Nadesico, Uchuu no Stellvia), Bottle Fairy does not display any of the company's signature 3D animation. Instead, you have a well-drawn anime with clean animation and character designs that are so kawaii. Soundtrack: A- For every kawaii anime out there, there's an opening theme that stays glued into your head. Bottle Fairy is no exception with its theme "Oshiete Sensei-san" by the Bottle Fairies. Sub vs. Dub Bottle Fairy features Nana Mizuki (Minazuki in Happy Lesson, Neiju in Tenchi Muyo! GXP) as Kururu, Kaori Nazuka (Lala-Ru in Now and Then, Here and There, Kisa in Fruits Basket) as Chiriri, Yui Horie (Naru in Love Hina, Ayu in Ultra Maniac) as Sarara, Ai Nonaka (Shima in Stellvia, Rika in Platonic Chain) as Hororo, Kisho Taniyama as Sensei, and Haruko Momoi (Mii in Popotan, Chika in Ai Yori Aoshi) as Tama-chan. English dub review coming soon. DVD Extras In a bottle at this time. The Bottom Line Got a sugar rush from watching Sugar? Then check out Bottle Fairy. It's good, clean fun for everyone of all ages. 19. As many of you know, Survivor Series will be playing next Sunday on PPV. Here's a rundown of the matches and my predictions: Ambulance Match: Shane McMahon vs. Kane - Regardless of how tough Shane-O Mac is, I don't think he's gonna win this one. Remember that Kane will not job to certain people (i.e. RVD), even if Shane-O Mac is the boss' son. WWE Women's Championship: Lita vs. Molly Holly - Lita is all over on the women's division and it should be a given that she'll win the title next Sunday. Remember two years ago when she was over and yet she was forced to job to Chyna? Hopefully, that will never happen again. Especially since Molly isn't really over with the crowd, despite her outstanding in-ring abilities. Buried Alive: Undertaker vs. Vince McMahon - The American Badass may or may not win this one. I'm pretty skeptical because Vinnie Mac has something up his sleeve. Besides, regardless of the outcome, Taker's gonna be buried alive. And if the rumors are correct, we'll see the return of the Phenom. World Heavyweight Championship: Goldberg vs. Triple-H - Duh! Who do you think will win? Team Angle vs. Team Lesnar - With Paul Heyman in their corner, Team Lesnar consists of WWE Champion Brock Lesnar, The Big Show, Matt Morgan, A-Train and Nathan Jones. Team Angle originally consisted of Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Hardcore Holly, Bradshaw and Faarooq. But then, Faarooq got jumped by Team Lesnar, sending him out of commission. Meanwhile, John Cena declined Lesnar's offer to join their team and paid the price with an attack from Lesnar and Co. Cena is now a face and he will be joining Team Angle. As for the match, Angle, Cena and Lesnar will be the final three and the outcome will be decided from that point on. Stone Cold's Team vs. Bischoff's Team - Austin's team consists of Booker T, The Dudley Boyz, Rob Van Dam and Shawn Michaels. Bischoff's team consists of Chris Jericho, Scott Steiner, Christian, Mark Henry and Randy Orton. The stipulation states that if Bischoff's team wins, Austin must relinquish his term as co-General Manager. On the other hand, if Austin's team wins, Austin will be allowed to give anyone a Stunner without being physically provoked. With a solid lineup, I cannot predict this one.
