1. nes/snes/n64  etc. all had a primitve lockout. their cartidge shape was diffrent. otherwise they where fully compatible.

Actually, that was only PART of it.

All NES releases outside of Japan had a regional lockout chip(initially. The NES2 has no lockout chips, because Nintendo no longer cared).

Japanese carts, lacking chips, worked in no one else's decks. The form factor was also diffrent, both to avoid the look of a game console(remember, retailers thought video games were a dead fad, so Nintendo had to go to a lot of effort to even get the NES into stores) as well as to add pins for the lockout chip.

Beyond that.... there were TWO DIFFRENT lockout chips. One was used in the Americas, another in Europe. While the form factor for both regions was the same, carts were NOT interchangable.

The SNES continued the use of 2 seperate regional lockout chips, and added form factor variances so they could use the US chip on japanese consoles without carts being swappable between regions(I suspect the SNES actually uses leftover NES stock, especiallg given much of it's design was done with an eye towards backwards-compatibility).

I'm not entirely sure how the N64 lockout is set up, but I guarantee it isn't form-factor-only.

ok. that was wierd. Considering, i have japanese snes games that work fine on my usa system. if they have the same region chip, then it explains why it would work.

for n64, you need an adapter to adjust the shape of it to play on a usa n64.

I remember seeing the super adapters which allowed, all nintedo cartidges to work on a n64. from the nes onward.

te gba etc where never region coded. I think sony leared from their psp.

Right. No portable has been, because there's a good chance that, for example, someone in the US armed forces might be stationed in Australia or something.

yep. I think sony realized how much money they where makign due to impor gaming. llol.

Xbox 360 only as a few titles which are region coded. Most are universal play.  Depending on the title you can import and play them.

here is a list of none region coded xbox 360 games.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Xbox_...region_encoding

If you actually go through the list, a lot of those games ARE locked.

yeah,. i added it afterwards. the ign article i read before lied!!! lol.

2. tape/dvd/ld etc any source readily avalable is allways better then braodcast.

Depends on reception, among other things.

unless we get bigger bandwith, this is true. it is. I rarly watch broadcast tv. if at all.

i think your confusing digital tv with hd tv.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_television

I'm aware of the diffrence.

I COULD have listed every step along the way, but chose to go for the extremes only and specify that there was a range in between.

Personally, I don't think a set should legally be allowed to call itself a DTV set if it's a standard-definition display.

The mass market has no comprehension of the diffrence between DTV(any ATSC source), HDTV(only the higher ATSC resolutions), and non-ATSC digital sources. And while things are better than the early days(when I gather TVs would only display those portions of the ATSC spec that were < or = their native res), I still think an HD resolution should be required after all the hype about superior image quality.

the goverment wants to standard to be changed to digital. The method of delivery not the actual content. When we reach 2009, there is no obligation for the channels to do hdtv signals. they will be required to delivery it digitally but not the content.

I've seen some odd uses of SAP before. Got one station that plays the weather radio robot on SAP. If I recall, another keeps a semi-constant newscast running on it.

Interactive TV's been done before too, actually. The early days of cable did it.

I'm not expecting a much better showing on either feature this time around.

i mean like dvds. you ave spanish, iapanese, etc. mulitple ones. also have a sporting event where you can switch viewing angles. You can have diffrent cameras broadcasting simeltaniosly.

Agreed.

The movie industry likes region codes, sadly. And any new video standard initiative has to recieve the movie industry's support.

Far as games go...

Sony's abandoning region coding for games on the PS3, but the system is a joke. 360 sticks with the "publisher's choice" policy from the XBox 1. And publishers choose lockouts.

I don't recall any statement from Nintendo about the Wii, but given the NES STARTED regional lockouts in games, I don't have a lot of hope.

Ignoring the political angle...

So HDTV reveals to the world what the more intelligent people already knew? Sounds like a plus to me. :)

412942

yeah. though they need to be carefull. this could effect alot of other stars as well.

3. anyone getting satelite or cable already is getting dtv.

A. There's analog services still.

B. DTV within the context of this discussion SHOULD be understood to mean ATSC spec, not any video which is transmitted in digital format and viewed on a TV.

Digital cable and satellite typically have WORSE image quality than a good NTSC reception, because they're overcompressed to squeeze more bandwidth out.

yes. the signal your getting is digital even though the source is analog.

they do. But most people can't get scif, hbo etc. off the air.

tape/dvd/ld etc any source readily avalable is allways better then braodcast.

Though if you want your chanlles without said venues you will need a converter to grab the signals.

Which is getting you something diffrent than digital cable.

And the level of benefit you'll get will vary greatly with actual hardware setup. An upgrade box on a standard NTSC set gets the worst, and a native HD set with integrated ATSC tuner gets the best.

i think your confusing digital tv with hd tv.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_television

Formats

All digital TV variants can carry both standard-definition television (SDTV) and high-definition television (HDTV).

All early SDTV television standards were analog in nature, and SDTV digital television systems derive much of their structure from the need to be compatible with analog television. In particular, the interlaced scan is a legacy of analog television.

Attempts were made during the development of digital television to prevent a repeat of the fragmentation of the global market into different standards (that is, PAL, SECAM, NTSC). However, once again the world could not agree on a single standard, and hence there are three major standards in existence: the European DVB system and the U.S. ATSC system, plus the Japanese system ISDB. For cable, in addition to ATSC standards, the SCTE standard is used to describe cable out-of-band metadata.

Most countries in the world have adopted DVB, but several have followed the U.S. in adopting ATSC instead (Canada, Mexico, South Korea). Korea has adopted S-DMB for satellite mobile broadcasting. At june, 29, 2006, after long debate, Brazil officially adopted the japanese system. China is devloping yet another standard, tentatively called DMB-T/H, which itself consists of two other standards: ADTB-T (similar to ATSC-T) and a variant of T-DMB.

There could be other specialized high-resolution digital video formats in the future for markets other than home entertainment. Ultra High Definition Video (UHDV) is a format proposed by NHK of Japan that provides a resolution 16 times greater than HDTV.

I am looking forward to dtv. Considering you can get multiple audio, subtitles a few other features. I belive the tvs i have can get it. Not sure about the 27 incher.

412933

Multiple audio channels and subtitles are already supported on NTSC via SAP and closed captioning.

Of course, SAP has seen very limited support and closed captioning sucks if for no other reason than it's VERY sensitive to noise.

412935

yes. i was talking about more then spanish. YOu get a few of them, Also interactive tv. lots of other cool features.

if they do a uniform format and stick with it. It will be much better. I want them to loose this region setting on dvds. Cause it;'s crap and we all know it. I own several region 2's and imporet games. I hate having to go out of my way to play them.

4. Uhm... some updates from the 'far East':

HDTV is the standard, already.  Japan has set the date of 2011

as being the day that ALL broadcast TV in the country will be exclusively HDTV.*  NHK (and a few other channels) are already broadcasting in HDTV.

Cutoff for analog in the US is scheduled for 2009, last I heard.

It's been floating, but they think DTV adoption is picking up enough that they won't roll this one back.

5. And the Dreamcast WAS better.

As far as commercial success... While I don't have any sales #s handy, I seriously doubt the PS1 was outselling the Dreamcast. Over it's entire life, I'm sure it had more units sold. But for any given overlap, I'd bet the Dreamcast had a much better rate of sale.

I never said the dc was bad, It was better yet it lost.

the psx was outselling te dc by 10 to 1....

Both Sony (whose PlayStation outsells Dreamcast by 10 to 1) and Nintendo are said to be developing advanced data storage and networking options for their own next-generation game machines, to be released later this year.

6. hd is overrated.

Lies!

why? I have a hd tv. It is very overrated. Why would i want to see imperfections on a star's skin.

People are also cheap bastards.

Doesn't matter when HD sets will be all that's available in a few years.

One tv set we bought in the 80's died a year ago. repair shops thrive for a reason.
Otherwise tapes would never have taken off nor vhs.

You DO know that VCRs cost an absurd sum of money when they were introduced, right? You just shot yourself in the foot.

yeah they did. They also let you record stuff, which was why it sold. Please don't quote me out of context.

LD's and betamax should have killed  vhs if this was the case.

Beta had some issues of it's own. The big one was that you could make a LONGER VHS tape. The quality diffrence on the hardware available at the time was insignifigant, which didn't help matters.

Also Beta never should've killed VHS. It was there first.

newer is not allways better. 75/76 being their respective dates of release. psx was outselling dreamcast and the dreamcast was how much newer?
LaserDisk had issues too. Aside from being grossly expensive, it was also huge and plagued with reliability issues.

And again, there were serious issues with television quality for most of it's life.

Had the home theater craze hit sooner, Laserdisk likely WOULD have become signifigant in the US market, though.

412225

you don't need better visual quality for most of the stuff that is out there.

ps. what is wrong with the tags?

7. well, with people starting to move into High Definition TV's... (aka my parents  <_< )

and my finding out that a DVD is not high definition at all.

i'm wondering since they redigitized/cleanedup/made pretty the series and DYRL if they are going to be eventually offered in high defininition?  can you guys shed some light on the posibility of this?

they can do that right?  it's not like Star Wars where Lucas supposedly recorded over the originals?  so they can give it to us still?  but prettier in a couple years?

8. Hello mw'ers.  There is a local con coming up and I am planning to sell some artwork I am in the process of drawing up.  I did hear that Tommy Yune and a few others from HG will be in attendance at the con, as well as Mari Ijima.  Knowing that this is an anime con, I am certain that fanart can be sold however...

With HG reps in attendance do you think i could still sell some of my macross drawings/paintings?

Just wondering since some of you have more experience going to anime cons and such.  I would be selling in the art auction thing, not the dealers room.

*wondering if Mari Ijima would sign a drawing I do of Minmei...HMM!!*

404275

noone cares. people sell their art all over it.

9. Ali, will you be bringing your sister to the con?
Assuming I go. Want a tekwando class lol.

386098

386157

i doub she will go

386173

You should donate a date with her as a prize.

That would be so cool, I would show up WITHOUT A DOUBT!

That would blow away any "drawing" prize for sure. B))

386274

rofl

10. yep. I can ask what ever I want to ask.

385507

cool. what do you want it to be? a vf? a character? I coudl do a few of them and they can be given as second or third place winners. So others get somthing. Heck. you can phtocopy them for non winnign enteries.

11. a appologise. i am at an emotional point which i cannot handle anything beyond sleeop(assuming i can fall asleep) and simpole activities. I have descided to take this summer off from expo mwcona dn possibly comicon. I won;t be frequenting the net much either. good bye for now.

12. how would you propose to convert them? I can give the objects to you in lightwave object files (.lwo) or .3ds files. :S Perhaps you can convert them to the necessary format from there?

381182

since the xenoguy is on board. we got vf1 etc. do you have aim or man? or any other im

13. alright... What files are compatable...

Do I have to animate the transformation? or can you do that?

how will I have to setup the model so that you can easily move the joints and other things?

what is the full title of this game and where can I get a hold of it?

is there a limit to the polys I can have? What is a reasonable poly count for realtime rendering.

I"ve always wanted to make a game of my own :p I wanna see the interface and the engine perhaps before I start so I can get a good feel for it. Maybe later we can even sell the rights to the mod... I dunno. Aside from macross battlecry, there hasn't been a GOOD macross game out there in a long while.

380812

this will be for fun. but if hg wants to do somthing. then it;s up to them. the fiels are specific. we would need to convert to them

14. i don't have the game.

what experience do you have?

and if you can manage it I can do voices and i'll do a low poly version of my VF-1S

380495

modding? none(before this). coding. I am a cs major. the code is very easy. i can easily do transformation as it supports it. the reason i know it support's it is due to the fact that a few of the ground troops change their baic shape to be able to ground themselves. Aslo the xwing lockign of s foils. All you need to do is make it an ability button which the ai can use if needed. I have fiddled witht e code. I know how to add the faction. I also added units. etc. I would need to define the ai, but that shoudl nto be hard. It woudl need to think both as a fighter, and an infantry man for a vf.

15. i dont realy like EAW, deamon tools detection makes it a hassle to use most of the time.... you should look at my space empires 4 mod idea in the games forum... that one is a little less involved, its just a matter of getting image files, also theres no way to easily transform, that and in the game theres realy only 3 fighter types, distinguishable by size not preset weapons, i litteraly just started, right now i need a lot of sorce images to try and pull the ships out of

380036

i have alcohol and it works fine. im me if you want to know how.

you can make any fighter type you want. it;s pretty easy. transformation is not hard at all. you just need the animation as there exists support for changing structures. both on fighters and on tanks.

16. I am learning to mod it. Already i have learned a ton. We can make variable fighters and ships and other units. I need models. really. I was thinking of doing a unspacy faction. Also adding earth, eden and a few other planets. I can do icons, logos etc pretty easily, also the coding. I can't do 3d or voices.

we can also do a whoel story moe eventually. which can go through the timeliness

this is my over all plan for factions. as you advance your tech improves and yoru old tech will improve So we can get a vf-0 with thermonuclear engines and fixed up etc. also other customs as hero figures. For ground we can have hero units eject then be bale to go into another mecha(liek chewbaka)

factions

unspacy

zero eara tech

space war 1 era tech

dyrl era tech with macross 2

flashback 2012

plus era+7 era

post 7

zentradi

space war 1 era tech

dyrl era tech

macross 2

once the above are done. We will do southern cross and mospeada.

So if anyoen want to help.
