All Things Videogame Related: EXTREME VS!!

I meant specifically storage, ie hard drive-wise. I mean, my PS3 has a 320GB hard drive, and my 360 has a 250GB hard drive. Most laptops see to be around 320-500GB, so that's close. It's just not close to my computer, but I stuffed 4TB into mine. So I'm ok with the idea of digital distribution, just not with the PSN's current pricing.- 6894 replies

Yeah... again, I'd complain more, but as a PC gamer I haven't bought a game on a physical disc (for PC, anyway) since... um... ...oh, right. The Witcher II. Because it came with that big book. My biggest concern about digital content isn't the bandwidth or even the storage, as consoles are starting to catch up to most PCs (well, maybe not mine, but you get the idea). It's with pricing. One of the reasons Steam has been so embraced by the PC community is the frequent sales. During the holiday sale, I probably bought 15 games for maybe $50-$60. Meanwhile, on the PlayStation Network, Sony's still asking $30-$40 for games that can be found brand new for less than $20.- 6894 replies

Yeah... I'd gripe more, but it's not like I can recall my PS3, Xbox 360, or PC ever being offline while I played. Oh, except when I went to Beijing. I put Steam in Offline Mode on my laptop so I could play Civ V in the evenings.- 6894 replies

Sony did say that the PS4 is going to have an offline mode... for PS4 games. From what I've heard, OnLive actually worked fairly well. I mean, yeah, the PSN's connection usually sucks, but Sony bought Gakkai for a reason. Heck, I'm willing to give Sony credit for trying to come up with a way to make the PS4 backwards-compatible with the previous 3 at all. Let's say that, for now, I remain cautiously optimistic about this feature.- 6894 replies

I don't think that's how it works. You're not streaming the whole game. A PS3/server/ whatever in the cloud is running the game, and all that's streaming to you is the audio/video, with your input streaming back. Like OnLive.- 6894 replies

Yeah, if I'd wanted to play Diablo III, I'd have done it already. Torchlight II was more fun. As for Killzone, I know I'm a minority here but I actually can't stand any of the games in the series so far. And at the risk of sounding like a PC elitist, shooters really are better with a mouse and keyboard. I'm not sure what to make of Watch Dogs, and I'm not even sure it's going to be PS4 exclusive. So that just leaves Infamous. And like I said, if I buy a PS4, that'd be my go to game, but by itself it's not enough to sell me a console. Give me an Uncharted, a God of War, a Ratchet & Clank, heck, even a Wipeout (wait, didn't Sony close Studio Liverpool? So maybe not Wipeout...), then we'll talk. That was a big incentive for me back when the original PlayStation came out. Now, not so much. I want to like the PS4, I really do. But with a PC, a PS3, and Xbox 360, a Wii U, a Vita, and a 3DS at home for me to game on, I need a little more than, "It's the new PlayStation!" to motivate me. I'll wait and see how E3 goes before I decide.- 6894 replies

No price, no must-have games (if I got one, Infamous is the most-appealing game announced so far to me). I don't even know what the thing looks like yet! So I'm not exactly waiting in line to pre-order one. Most of the PS4 announcements so far have just been noise. The one interesting thing announced so far is remote play on the Vita. The ability to play a game on the controller when my wife's watching TV is the thing that sold me on a Wii U (games owned to date: 1). EDIT: OK, now that it's over, Sony really didn't tell us beans. PS4 for holiday 2013? No crap, Sony. Some games were announced, some of which we probably could have guessed were coming to PS4 anyway (Destiny, Watch Dogs), some of which were pleasant surprises (Infamous), and some of which are glorified tech demos at this point. Speaking of which, does the PS4 look better than the PS3, graphically? Of course it does. But I'm not seeing anything jaw dropping, or anything that really looks better than what a PC game with proper hi-res textures and DirectX 11 support can do. Oh, and Sony told us some specs, (x86 CPU, 8GB of RAM) that mean exactly nothing at this point. They're not even going to show us what the actual console looks like until E3, for crying out loud. Really, the only news out of the whole shebang I found interesting is PlayStation Cloud and Remote Play on the Vita.- 6894 replies

No voucher for me, either. In other news, FTL is pretty hard! I've been playing on easy, and while I've made it to sector 8 twice, none of my brave crews even made it to the boss. I find the game strangely addictive, though.- 6894 replies

This, mostly. Don't get me wrong, there are games I've played where, when the end credits start to roll, I'm thinking, "Is that it?" Zone of the Enders 2 was probably the worst offender, with my first playthrough lasting around two and a half hours, and my second playthrough I completed in one sitting without saving. There are other games, though that sort of wear out their welcome. As good as it was, by the time I reached the end of Borderlands 2's campaign, I was sick of it. The game could have ended 10 hours earlier and I'd have been happier. I'd say for me, depending on the genre, 8-15 hours is good for all non-RPG games, and 20-40 for RPGs. Longer than that, and I'll probably get bored before I actually finish the game (ala Skyrim).- 6894 replies

I'm passing for now. I loved Crysis and Warhead, but Crysis 2 was pretty forgettable, and 3 is getting mediocre reviews. Plus, y'know, Origin. I'll wait until the price comes down. In the meantime, I'm picking up FTL while it's half off in Steam's "runs on Linux!" sale.- 6894 replies

Dang, Archer, you're making me feel old! You can swap "PS2 on launch day" with "NES two years late", change "the year I started middle school" to "the year after I started middle school" and swap "PlayStation 3" with "SNES." Finally, replace the "4" with "2" in the "Now, in college" sentence and you've got something that's more accurate to me. I get really nostalgic for the old NES days. I was (still am, really) a huge fan of Mega Man, I remember trying to shoot the dog in Duck Hunt, blowing in my cartridges when they wouldn't load right away, and being super psyched that the TMNT arcade game was coming to the NES. I skipped Sega's early consoles out of loyalty to Nintendo, but that loyalty faded away around the time the original PlayStation launched when I was in high school. By then, I had a job so I've actually owned every PlayStation, both Xboxes, and every Nintendo system. Plus a Dreamcast. A lack of brand loyalty helped give me some perspective, I think. I was able to see some of the missteps Sony was making with the PS3 instead of blindly assuming it would dominate the way the PS2 did, and I didn't mind waiting for the price to drop. In fact, I haven't bought a console at launch at all since the Xbox 360 (which was the last one to release while I worked for Gamestop). Since my wife likes to watch TV in the evening, I've moved primarily into PC gaming. So, will I buy a PS4? Probably. But I doubt it'll be at launch. I'll wait for either a game I really want that isn't on the PC, or a price drop.- 6894 replies

Basically this. I've been tempted to buy either Giant or Hercules, but not $500 tempted. And I might have bought Hegemon, if he were more readily available. But pretty much everything else has been interesting, but not $100 and up interesting.- 9275 replies

I've seen a few Beast Hunters figures... I've just passed on them all. The only two announced that I have any interest in are Smokescreen and Shockwave, maybe Optimus. Also today, I saw FoC Sideswipe and Ultra Magnus. I passed on both. I thought Jazz was pretty crappy, so I want nothing to do with Sideswipe. Ultra Magnus is pretty tempting, though. Despite having the same body, he manages to look pretty distinct, and I dig the head sculpt (although I can't figure out why they gave him red eyes). What I didn't find was Grimlock, who was the only one I would have bought for sure. I also didn't see Starscream or Kickback, whom I may have considered buying. Local TRU still has plenty of Thundercrackers, though.- 17159 replies

The Hasbro version fixes MP-10's eyes, and I actually dislike the hydraulics on MP-01. They're like glaring weak points that no animated or print version of G1 Prime even had (that I'm aware of), and the ones on the backs of his (too small) arms look awful in truck mode. Great collection... but you do know that you can adjust Prime's smokestacks so that the bottoms don't stick out in bot mode, right? There are a few differences. Parts of the inside of the Takara trailer are painted silver, and the Takara Roller is silver while the Hasbro version is blue. The Hasbro version has the eyes painted a light blue, while I think the Takara version uses an unpainted translucent plastic that came off as sort of gray and dead. The Hasbro version also has some yellow paint on the lights above the windows, while the Takara version is left unpainted. Finally, Prime's head, legs, and hands, as well as the robot thingy in his trailer, are a lighter blue on the Hasbro version. All other things being equal, I think the Hasbro version looks a little better. And they're probably not equal, since the Hasbro version is probably cheaper.- 17159 replies

When MP-10 was announced, I was skeptical. I loved MP-01, and I didn't think another MP Optimus was necessary. Then I actually got MP-10. He's superior to MP-01 in almost every conceivable way. No die-cast? #*$@ die-cast! He looks 10 times better in alt mode, with better sides, side-view mirrors, less-noticeable gaps, and his grill doesn't stick out, with the top of the cap hanging weirdly out over even the grill. In bot mode, MP-10 has a better head sculpt, better proportions, a chest that isn't gaping off his abdomen, better stability, and better poseability. The result is that MP-01 looks like a guy wearing a cardboard Optimus Prime costume, MP-10 looks like Optimus Prime come to life. Long story short, yeah, even though MP-04 looks like he's going for more on eBay, if someone offered even up to give me an MP-10 for an MP-04 I'd take the trade.- 17159 replies

The anime isn't bad, but it's sort of like a Reader's Digest version of the game. I watched it with my wife, and I remember thinking after a few episodes, "Man, they're already at that part?" If my only Persona experience was the anime, I'd probably write it off as an entertaining but ultimately forgettable experience, but the game really stays with you. By the end, I was really invested in my life and friends, to the point that I changed my avatar on MW (after using different Mega Man Zero avatars for close to a decade), found Persona 4 wallpapers for my iPad (and Persona 3 for my PC's desktop and Nexus 7's lock screen). I intend to buy the Official Complete Works art books for Persona 3 and 4, too. Which reminds me, if you end up liking Persona 4, Persona 3 Portable is available in the Vita's PlayStation Store. While 4 is probably the stronger game overall, there's a lot of stuff I liked about 3 better, and I think it's worth playing. Changing gears, I was talking to my brother the other day, and he was made the comment that he thought that the Super Nintendo was the greatest game console ever. As someone born in 1980, I do have a LOT of nostalgia for the old NES and SNES days. But while they're are certainly several classic games in the SNES library, I wonder if my brother was looking at it through rose-colored glasses. I mean, the SNES also had a glut of mediocre mascot platformers like Bubsy and Aero the Acro-Bat, and too many crappy side-scrolling beat 'em ups, too. That got me thinking that if I approached it objectively, I think the PlayStation 2 probably had the biggest library of games I really enjoyed (excluding PC, of course). In fact, it got me so thinking about PlayStation 2 that I dug a 20" CRT out of the attic, grabbed my PS2 and my enormous library of PS2 games out of the closet, and hooked everything up in my basement "man-cave." When I get off work tomorrow, I know what I'm doing! PS ~ Is it too soon to think of the PS2 retro gaming? Man, I remember pre-ordering it at EB Games back when I was a sophomore in college, almost 11 months before it actually came out. I got lucky and got a tuition refund when it actually came out, so at launch I bought the system, a memory card, an extra controller, DoA2 Hardcore, Ridge Racer V, Tekken Tag Tournament, and my very first DVD ever... Honestly, David, I'm happy that Blitzwing looks as good as he does. Tank mode looks like a tank to me, and his jet mode, while a little blocky, looks a lot more like a plane with Macross-style FAST packs than the flying tank that was Animated Blitzwing, and isn't that much worse than the original's bi-plane wings. Yeah, and it appears to be based on IDW's take on G1 Prime. I would have preferred him in a Deluxe size, though, to fight with the upcoming IDW Megatron. In fact, I'd rather they were giving us a Deluxe IDW Prime than a Deluxe IDW Orion Pax.- 17159 replies

Ok... Springer and Blitzwing? So buying. The IDW line? I want to encourage them, really. I'll buy Megatron, although he really should have been a Voyager. I'm pretty meh on the other three, though. Metroplex? A part of me really wants a huge Metroplex, and the bot mode looks fantastic. His other modes look like crappier versions of the G1 toy. We'll see how my funds are when he's released, but I'm leaning toward it being too expensive.- 17159 replies
