  1. I'm so piss drunk now posting from my mobile, HAPPY NEW YEARS!!

Hey, at least you're not getting onto ebay drunk.

--> looks over at 1/48 scale Low Visibility Color Scheme (version 1)

  2. After getting this kit in my hands, I must agree with member wm cheng's sentiment on the landing gear -- what a joke. I wonder how the 1/72 landing gear would look on the 1/60 scale DX; I want to saw off the die cast metal approximation of landing gear on the toy. Seriously, rather than what the toy has, I'd rather have no landing gear and flexi-display stand included. <_<

  3. Well... after 2 hours of grinding, cutting and sanding, my advice is:

    DON'T DO IT

To achieve a good dipping Gerwalk posture, the trick is NOT to increase the freedom of the kneecap... it is the upper knee joint that's connected to the thighs.

In other words, you've to to cut away some of the flat detailed panel at the end of the thighs. That's easy to do if you can separate the thighs. Unfortunately, the screw caps on the thighs are glued down.

Now I have great candidate for DX Battle Damaged™ Alto :p

Thanks for exploring this. Once we members start figuring out what modifications work, we should create a thread to act as a one-stop-shop for modding/fixing these things.

  4. That knee-mod pic is very inspiring. I'm right now in the midst of taking apart my DX Alto's leg...

The bad: after prising off the screw hole cover (it's the gray painted long ovoid detail piece), there's still the back piece that's glued down tight to hold the halves together; I'm not gonna risk cracking a visible part of the toy!

However, after some pushing and shoving around, I found out that the kneecap piece can be separated first by one half, then the other. That allows the lower leg to be pull off at last!

Examining the area under the kneecap, it looks like the modder used brute force to wrench off the offending 'limiter piece' and ALSO hacked off some of the underlying plastic to allow the kneecap to rotate further back inside. I'm going to try cutting/sawing the inner surface first before deciding to pluck off the 'limiter'. If I fail, at least the damage is hidden under the kneecap.

    Wish me luck!

It would be great if you could post a pic or two of the torn down leg assembly.

  5. Man the only vf-25 alto on ebay is sold out already! oh well even if I did get mine through ebay he probly wouldnt be able to ship to me from japan until the 5th... Thats when japan new years vacation ends.

I admit, I looked on ebay as well. For me, the rush to get one of these in my hands isn't about my inner child's impatience so much as it is about getting the Macross hobby bug somewhat out of my system before grown up life consumes all my time.

edit: If there is some way to get one of these faster than mid-January, then I'd like the option -- will cover the expense(s). Maybe one of our members who can go to a local retailer and pick one of these up can help me.

  6. Hello.

I have given up all hope in the DX now that there are pictures and have some questions about the 1/72 model, just to be sure:

    1) Is it basically the same as a Mastergrade Gundam in terms of durability, complexity, detail and color finish?

    2) It's snap fit right?

    3) Are the yellow/red stripes applied watermark decals?

    4) Do I HAVE to paint it? Will it look really ugly if I don't? I don't paint my Gundams and they don't look ugly to me...

    5) I've seen pictures of an upcoming Luca - so is it safe to assume they're working on Mikhael and there will hopefully be more coming up?

    Thanks

    Pete

The answer is YES to 1, 2, and 5. The answer to 3 & 4 is YES, HOWEVER.

The model kit has water-slide and stickers included. If you want to paint, check out the build-up threads; the members who have put them up have gone through a lot of trouble, so take advantage of their modeling tips.

  7. Like at least one other member has stated, this thing is unfortunately what I was expecting, given the fact Bandai chose to make a transforming model of the VF-25. I preordered this thing (and the model kit) expecting to just play with it as a toy. That being stated, I bet there is a few of us that will attempt to tweak some of the shortcomings of this release. ;)

Unfortunately, I do not know how to fix the scale of this thing, but things like landing gear, pilots, glossy finishes, and, my personal favorite, the exposed canopy in battroid mode are likely things that can be dealt with. With the things I've seen the Chunky Monkey Mafia pull off, I see some hope these play-toys can be a little better.

  8. Oh - and Wicked Ace - that VF-OS pose is...er...well wicked! :) Those are the stands that seem to me to be the best - are those Flexidisplays?

And are they really stable? How do they manage to hold the figures like that? Seems if you tipped him - he'd fall over?

    Pete

All are the Flexidisplay stands. These are very stable, as the base has considerable weight. These stands can hold the poses in my pictures indefinitely. The picture of the stand with a 1/48 Strike Valkyrie on top of a pint of beer shows how confident I am in them.
