  1. So you have to like every series they come up with to be a Macross fan? Really? You have some pretty strong opinions there yourself buddy. No it doesn`t, colonisation of space happened in Macross II continuity, just not on the scale of 7 and Frontier. Megaroad and its lost crew are not only part of Kawamori canon, but MII aswell. I find it a much more believable version of history that as humanity repopulated and space fleets were lost in deep space and as the Earth was under renewed Zentraudi attack that the fortification of Earth was more of a priority.
  2. What was your point? and things are very different now, Japans economy is in stagnation, less risks are taken than in the boomtimes of the `80s and there is less creativity/creative freedom. Animation houses rely on sure sell moe paedophile fantasies more and more.
  3. Macross is special for me because I grew up with Robotech, trips to Chinatown, Jetfire and bootleg toys so its nostalgia plus a very good war show. I`m a fan of all epic war stories. As far as other anime goes I used to be into anything I could get my hands on but as I`ve aged I`ve realised that most stuff gets worse and worse and I`ve learned to focus on the era I love best, gritty `80s war shows with bad ass mecha and characters that die.
  4. ? Of course I love the original show, DYRL, FB2012 and all related material as well. I think this group of shows goes together with MII much more neatly than Kawamori`s vision which seems to be just trend of the week with the name Macross slapped on it. IMHO Kawamori was better as a mechanical designer than a director or planner.
  5. Oh sorry, yeah I guess it does. I guess I meant the branch of the continuity that was done by Big West without Kawamoris involvement, Macross II. Macross II is better than Zero, Plus, 7 and Frontier combined.
  6. Fair enough. I just didnt enjoy Plus at all either really. It didnt feel like a Macross show and thats because it wasn`t, it was just a generic OVA script picked off the shelf by Kawamori, given the Macross name and shoved awkwardly into Macross continuity. I guess I`m more of a purist and only follow Big West endorsed Macross. Its really the only true Macross, the rest is just a power mad floating head getting carried away.
  7. hey Maybe they should make The Final Countdown II: The Final Final Countdown. with the time travel aspect they could go forward to 2001 with tomcats and try to stop the 9/11 attacks. Or back to 1986 with F-35s and shoot down the migs before Maverick even has to, therefore saving him some stress.
  8. YES!!! This is what I tell so many people and they never seem to be able to comprehend that something old could be better than something new.
  9. OP, you sound like you have the same basic mindset as me about Macross, the magic and hocus pocus stuff is garbage. The minmay attack goes from psy ops to `song energy`, wtf? I recommend you stop with Macross II and disregards 7, Zero, Plus and Frontier from the continuity. If you want more story get a PC Engine and a Saturn and track down the canon games.
  10. great news about 0079 getting a proper sub with the Japanese audio track now apparantly available?, why did they even bother to release it dub only to begin with?? I just wasted my money on a bootleg of it, with atrocious subs. Well at the rate I watch anime these days Bandai have a year or two until I`m ready to watch ZZ which better be out by then . damn the unicorn bd is too much cash for me right now
  11. Back in America by Network/La Roux
  12. I`m pretty sure that transfer is 4:3 I`m also pretty sure that the only way you can own the original versions (or at least the `80s rerelease versions) is to get the Laserdisc set which I plan to finally do if the blu ray set doesn`t include widescreen prints of the originals.
  13. It would be a cliquey, elitist and exclusionary way of showing off to other Macross fans. I like it a lot BIG EDIT: whoa, I only just zoomed your image and I was originally thinking of the old Big West stickers, like the one I had on my Jetfire box, they would be way way cooler than the current Big West stickers.
  14. it gets better! great story and characters. I `ve only seen up to ep9 tho and cant find a reliable torrent for up to 16 which I think is all thats been subbed so far. Anyone got any good links?
  15. Don`t get your hopes up about remastered DYRL, it looks bright but not necessarily better than the original R2 transfer.
  16. I vote for Robot Monster as the worst SF film of all time.
  17. Anyone like Flashpoint: Dragon Rising? Just got it for PS3 and I`m addicted, unlike call of duty it actually makes you feel like you`re in realistic combat and your actions matter. I love the feeling of being part of a realistic Marine taskforce.
  18. mod feel free to delete all this crap, I dont really care anymore.
  19. anyway back on topic, based on that the vast majority of Japanese men are geeks with bonuses, I say things like the HDP regult and SDF-1 are just the beginning for overpriced toys. yeah I was there in 1999 for a year as a student and then I worked there from 2005 to 2009 so it was easy for me to observe changes in society there.
  20. Sorry but I lived in Japan for 5 years, in the city and the country, I knew a lot of Japanese people and this is the truth as I observed it. I knew an Australian woman who married a Japanese man and he was exactly like this, as soon as they were married he lost interest in her, cheated and went to soaplands constantly. They divorced recently. Sometimes stereotypes are true. I know you western otaku like to idealise Japan and its people but what you want to be true is far from reality in most cases. I also met hundreds of Japanese men in English class. Of these I got to know 20 or 30 very well and we used to hang out and drink etc. Its a sad fact but about 2/3rds of these guys who were my age (late 20s) admitted to me they were virgins and had never had a girlfriend, even the ones that were good looking and appeared normal. Most of them are too scared to approach women. Sad but true.
  21. Hmmm, less Japanese are getting permanent jobs these days and I`m not sure how long the comfortable Japanese lifestyle will continue for most as the country goes further and further into debt and ages with virtually no immigration and a low low birthrate. Even compared to when I was first in Japan (late `90s) the last couple of years have been different. Young people demand cheap disposable goods more and more while the previous generation was more obsessed with luxury and brand names. I think collecting displayable toys is something that the old can do and will do so while I dont think many new customers will come and board I think the original customers with their good salaries, bonuses and eventual retirement packages will keep buying their whole lives with their bigger and bigger incomes. Who knows? Maybe in 2030 Yamato will only produce stuff in solid gold instead of HDP? but hey thats just my opinion. No need for anyone (Eugimon) to get offended if you don`t agree.
  22. You`re completely forgetting the primary market for these toys is Japanese males. Now in my experience living in Japan for 5 years about 5% of Japanese males get all the women while 95% are introverted and consumed by their hobbies. Many of the customers of Yamatos from a decade ago, who also grew up with Macross would still not be married. You are also discounting the power of the Japanese bonus. This is how so many lower middle class people have studio grade film cameras at air shows, rolex watches at age 20 and HDP regults in their bedrooms. Even when Japanese men get married they live seperate lives and never see their family, most men spend their money at soaplands, blowjob parlours or `snacks` but nerds still spend their time and money on their hobbies. Also remember that a Japanese permanent workers salary automatically goes up when they get married and for each kid they have, they also typically have subsidised company housing. Now consider that most adults still interested in Macross are probably technically minded people and are probably engineers or architects and would have good incomes. Also Japanese and most asians have tiny inexpensive housing, which mostly means low cost of living and more money for hobbies. Remember you and the entire American market is probably 1% of Yamatos sales if that. Maybe Graham can give us a better idea?
  23. I have that one too. The amount of previously unseen detail you can see in the remaster is incredible but the black is horribly grainy, according to a lot on MW that could have been fixed too if the remaster team knew what they were doing? I still go back to my fx copy just because of the blacks. Anyway the HD remaster set is worth it just for the extras alone imo, repro Skylark giveaways? Compiled Saturn animation?! Coooool!
  24. nice, I remember I was in Tokyo when that came out and I think there were two versions, collectors that you have and standard? I didnt even have a DVD player back then..
