  1. MS Gundam (UC series) is mostly science fiction. Macross is pure space fantasy.

The rationale behind the Mobile Suits is certainly more realistic than that of building giant transformable airplanes to fight giant sized aliens. :p

You'd think outer space had an atmosphere watching Macross.

As for the characters, well lets say I'd take an Amuro Ray, Bright Noa and Sayla Mass every day of the week before even considering whinny little Hikaru Ichijo, Misa Hayase and bitchy Linn Minmei.

well i think your comment is more appropriate in the gundamworld :p
  2. Actually, to be fair to Bandai, they did release a heck of a lot of the renewal version VF-25F Alto and for months after release, many shops here in Hong Kong had multiples still sitting on shelves. It's only recently that stock has started to dry up a bit, but they can still be found.

The VF-25S renewal version was obviously released in smaller quantities, but can still be found, although at a much inflated price.

The YF-29 is another story altogether though and Bandai's first release was pitifully small.

I have a feeling the VF-171EX is going to be a big seller for Bandai and popular with fans, so let's hope they release sufficient quantities this time round.

soo how much valk are you planning to buy this time Graham :p

  3. I must just be weird. Except for the VF-1 Fast Packs I'm really not a fan of all of the extra clutter attached to these other valks. The Vf-11 and on I prefer to leave without all of the extra armor/packs/whatever.

To be fair, the new guy in charge of the group making the Macross Toys seems to care a lot more about how these things look.

also to be fair, i just like to say don't put your hope to high to the toy..even with the renewal version.. bandai still have an issue with the vf 25.. but then again i'm just saying i still respect the love that bandai give to this line.. and i won't expect a lot for the design, i'm happy enough if the toys delivered to me with a good quality control check
  4. The clean VF-171EX was shown in Macross Chronicle 37. I can only find very low-res scans:

But here is a high-res art of the armored version:

One thing I am not sure about is the landing gears on the legs.

Green circled the seam lines and it is the same location for landing gears on VF-17, but how does it work with armors on? The red circled part may be an alternative but it is already painted as standard micro missile ports.

Screen shot from episode 24 shows landing gears with armors on, but it looks like they just draw them to the end of the unit without giving much thought.

hey we are talking bandai here.. i don't think they will really care about the small detail like landing gear.. just look at the koenig.. and the vf 25 v 1 <_<

  5. So, I've looked into this a little, and gonna try to ask my coworkers if there are other vendors that use "Objet" printers for parts printing, versus Zcorp.

"Objet" produced fine detail for Ironman suit prototypes and our HALO models. It seems as though the tolerances are much smaller than the zcorp and stratasys.

    a look at Objet.

As for the earlier question about 3d design, I'm learning that modeling for games is much different than for printing.

Clean poly sculpting will get you mostly there ( because it will make optimization and shelling easier), and there's great forums on www.3dtotal.com

agree.. when we modelled for games.. the modeller will try to made the model as low of poly as he can.. and will depend with normal map and texture for detailing.. for 3d printing i think we should try to made a model as smooth as we can.. but with optimist detil at i try to made detail no less then 0,5 mm with the hope that the detail still can be capture with the print

  6. Where's a good place to start learning 3D design? You guys got me all inspired and stuff. Consider me a padawan learner and point out the way.

there's a lot of 3d forum in internet. you could browse some place like cg arena cgtalk and many others for a help and tutorial :)

  7. actually i build all my model as a low poly model.. with the hope that the detail although it will be minor still could be capture with the 3d printer.. i'm still waiting for a confirmation with the material from my local 3d printer.. and if everything work out fine .. i will try to print it again in shapeway

  8. Do you have pictures of the final product? That tends to vary greatly from the 3D screen caps where small detail is concerned. I wouldn't expect that detail like the fingers or heel would print well.

Actually i never use shapeways product.. but i print it in my local 3d print in my city.. when it finish iwill post it in this forum.. i havent made a prize yet in shapeways.. and just upload it in shapeways.. i think i'm gonna try to print it in the end of the week with shapeway and if everything check out ok.. i will make it available
