  1. Interesting to see that even though the Yamato and Musashi were sister ships, the Yamato was much more heavily armed.

What color gray did you use? Instructions called for Kure Arsenal gray, but I used Yukosuka Arsenal gray instead (since that's what I already had a lot of). Did a mix of hull red and Gundam red for the hull.

  2. BTW, is the wood deck custom or does it come with the kit? I've never built "real-world" scale model before, so I wouldn't know what usually comes with these kits.

It's an after-market part. So were the gun barrels. The deck peice of the kit is marked like a wood deck, but I think the add on part makes it look so much better. The new barrels look nicer, too. They do offer a super, insanely detail parts set, but as I've never used these types of parts before, I didn't want to go crazy. Besides, that part set is more than the model itself!

That thing's gorgeous. I'd buy one myself if I didn't already have six other kits waiting for me to complete,

eh, I've only got 22 waiting to be built...

it was a birthday present from my wife, anyway.

How does one go about removing the gloss finish on a glossy paint?

Look for something called "flat base" that you can add to your paint. I know Mr. Color has that, think Tamiya does too. Add the recommended amount, gloss turns flat. Half the amount, semi-gloss.

  3. It's been a long, but generally satisfying build. Never built a ship before, and this is the first real world subject I've built in quite a few years. Didn't go crazy with the option parts, just replaced the barrels, and the wood deck.

Now, the main question is where I'm going to put this thing when I actually do finish it.

  4. Nice work, Linus! I remember seeing some of your builds a while back on e2046. Nice to see you over here.

However, I think you should be posting completed work in the Models thread. The Building/Customizing thread is if you're showing a work in progress.

Is this the Yellow Sub kit? I've got a couple waiting to build. Picked them up cheap to see the differences between this and the Hasegawa. Plus, it's nice to tackle resin once in a while.

  5. Spray booth should be fine with that mask. Just remember to do your work in the hood! I've got a bad habit of keeping my work a little too far away from the fan for it to work effectively. You do probably want to vent outside, though. I've got a quick, easy way to do that; crack the window, put the tube in the bottom part, then cut out strips of cardboard to fit the gap left in the window. Since I use the booth only in the winter time, that does really cut down on the amount of cold air getting in.

If you check the On the Workbench thread, I've posted a recent shot of the Musashi. Yes, a lot of parts! And I haven' even gotten to the (probably) 30 plus machine guns to spread around the deck.
