  1. You and Yours", a British radio consumer affairs program broadcast on BBC Radio 4, has aired a segment on the fan-generated controversy over the audio quality of METALLICA's new album, "Death Magnetic". Among those interviewed for the show was Ian Shepherd, a mastering engineer and DVD author at Sound Recording Technology (SRT).

Ted Jensen, the engineer who mastered the album at Sterling Sound in New York, recently responded to fan complaints that the CD is too loud and the audio is pushed to distortion levels by writing, "I'm certainly sympathetic to your reaction, I get to slam my head against that brick wall every day. In this case the mixes were already brick-walled before they arrived at my place. Suffice to say I would never be pushed to overdrive things as far as they are here. Believe me, I'm not proud to be associated with this one, and we can only hope that some good will come from this in some form of backlash against volume above all else."

Mastering is the process of preparing and transferring recorded audio from a source containing the final mix to a data storage device, the "master," from which all copies will be produced.

Blame for the sound quality has been laid at the feet of the band itself, producer Rick Rubin and his recording engineer, Greg Fidelman.

The CD version sounds like its pushing through the speakers. Its too loud. There's no depth to it. The drums sound muffled.

  2. Ah yes the fanboy wars will continue with Tekken 6 now on the 360. Can't say I'm surprised. Third party exclusives are a thing of the past. Namco/Bandai has been releasing some of their current games on the 360 and PS3.

You'd think Tekken 6 wasn't coming to the PS3 at all with the way the fanboys are squawking lol

  3. I don't buy toys that much anymore...so no. But when it comes to everything else. Ya. When I have extra money I have to decide where it will be better spent.. A videogame, I'll play for months or a movie I might watch once or twice in 6 months. I'll go with the videogame.

My wife and I like to cook so we never really eat out that much. Trust me, you'll save alot of money that way. I know people who eat out at least 5 days a week..and they wonder why they have no money...

I sell fasteners/screws/bolts etc ..and things are so slow right now. Alot different than this time last year. The high oil and steel prices this past year have been part of the problem...

  4. Macross II was great back in the day..it was the first title that was actually sold as a Macross property in the US..Macross Plus was soon after.

Macross II feels like DYRL?-lite. Story is kind of the same, characters are less interesting, same goes for the VFs.

The character designs themselves are good and so is the music. Mech action is solid. Better than Macross Zero?..even though Zero had its faults...um no..better than Plus?...please..I'd put Macross II over most of Macross 7.

  5. I watched the first 10 episodes of Macross Frontier over the weekend...pretty good for the most part..the love triangle ...Kawamori has got to come up with better/new ways to create conflict among characters..I know it's a Macross staple and this is the 25th anniversary show..but still. However, the mech porn in this series is great. Especially for a TV series.

  6. A new low for DLC. Namco is selling 2 weapons packs for Soul Calibur IV...turns out they are the same weapons you could acquire while playing the game..they aren't that hard to unlock...at least they warn you before you purchase..

Not sure what the price is yet since it hasn't been released on the US PSN store. They are up on the JP store though. For 400 yen for each pack.

  7. The Dark Knight: December 9th

  8. No Iron Man for u!! Blu-ray being recalled

the forums are lit up this morning with news that the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Iron Man' has been recalled. A few weeks back, some of those receiving review copies reported trouble playing the disc in their Blu-ray players. Apparently, there is an authoring problem with the disc, and distributors have been issued direction to send back all product.

According to those distributors, Paramount is doing everything possible to get enough replacement discs to retailers in time for its September 30th release date, but it may not be able to meet the demand. If Paramount can't get enough titles onto retail shelves, they may delay the title until October 7th.

Online retailers like Amazon are likely to ship first-come, first-serve, so make sure you have your pre-order in now if you haven't done so already.

  9. Hey David,

I installed XVID4PSP and during the previews at least, none of the subtitles show up - how did you convert MKV WITH subtitles to something the PS3 can play?

Has anyone else gotten the Macross Frontier MKV (with embedded subtitles) to sucessfully convert to something the PS3 can plan in HD?

    Thanks,

    Wm

I've converted MKV files with subs using mkv2vob. Usually I just convert them to mpeg2. The subs will be burned in though.

  10. Geneon has announced that they will bring 'Sin City' to Blu-ray on December 5th. As Geneon owns distribution rights for this film only in Japan, don't expect it to be released in any other country at this time. No technical specs or special features have been announced at this time, but as a Region A title, it is an easy import for anyone in North America.

Hell yeah.. must resist the import...unless the exchange rate improves..

  11. I am a fan of everything before Burton died. Jason Nutsweat can't play a bass to save his life. Burton was a major influence for me to start playing bass.

Speaking of which, I've got a nice red Yamaha 5-string that isn't getting a lot of attention lately. I need to pick it up and play more often.

Ya old Metallica is still the best. Although Death Magnetic is pretty good. A step in the right direction....finally

I always found it odd that people were influenced by Burton or Newsted. Most Metallica songs, the bass is so low in the mix you can barely hear it. Same goes for new CD. And Robert Trujillo is freaking awesome. He was fantastic with Ozzy and Suicidal Tendencies.
