You could not have misread or misunderstood Kylo Ren more than you have. That's a shame, as he might be the best character in the new movie. Adam Driver did a brilliant job.

That's the general idea, but I don't think the First Order has all that much power, and I think the Republic is very much like our U.N.--there are many voices with many agendas, and unless the First Order (or another Imperial remnant) does something really heinous, you aren't going to move the collective civilized galaxy to action.

Are you confused about the whole Republic/Resistance/First Order thing as I am? Well, I did a little research into the political situation in the galaxy far, far away, and what follows is my best guess/approximation from what little information in available (mainly wiki explanations of plots from the new Star Wars books/comics and interviews with Abrams and company). No movie spoilers are contained in this post. One year after the Battle of Endor the Battle of Jakku takes place. It's a decisive victory for the New Republic over the bulk of the remaining Imperial Forces. A treaty is signed, and what we would once have called the Imperial Remnant is scatted among unimportant backwater worlds and the Outer Rim, disorganized and with no real power--or the ability to project power--outside of a single planet or system. Cut off from the resources and trade of the Republic, it is expected that most of these remnant forces will eventually capitulate, and it doesn't appear the Republic has any further desire to wage war against them to force the issue. So, where do the First Order and Resistance come into play? The Resistance is a paramilitary organization that continues the fight against the remaining Imperial forces scattered throughout the galaxy. They are led by some of the most dedicated fighters from the Rebellion, with tacit support from the Republic. Their forces are small, but they have a strong intelligence network and can strike quickly. It's essentially war by proxy. Another way to look at it is the Mossad hunting down and capturing escaped Nazis using extralegal means in the years after WW2. While there is some grousing about violations of sovereignty and whatnot, the U.N. doesn't do more than give Israel a slap on the wrist, because who likes Nazis? There's also some U.S./Soviet Union Cold War in the mix, but Abrams and company were mainly thinking Nazis. Now imagine after WW2 some of those Nazis who had escaped capture and prosecution reformed their leadership in Argentina, and began building a small power-base there. That's the First Order. They have a base, a handful of capital ships, and a small army they have begun to train and indoctrinate. While they aren't enough of a threat to push the Republic to action, they are definitely on the Resistance's radar. And then spoilers... This may not be totally accurate, but it's what I could piece together with the information currently available.

The movie's director has criticized the trailer, as well. sounds like it was totally in the hands of the marketing department.- 466 replies

The Force Awakens IS Star Wars. Every inch of it. It looks like it, it acts like it, and it feels like it. I'm talking OT here, folks, not the prequels--Awakens is the real deal. It's wonderful and thrilling and it leaves you needing more. The performances were excellent across the board, with Adam Driver being a real stand out. He's flat out fantastic. And this is the most life I've seen in a Harrison Ford performance since... my god, I don't even know. Is the film perfect? No, but it hardly matters. It is Star Wars. Criticisms in a spoiler box for spoilers (duh) and to not color anyone's opinion before seeing it for themselves.

And did Arclight make this move because they were pushed to, or did they make a move because it meant much more money for them?

Breach of contract, or the theater exercising a clause in the contract that allows them to back out of the deal? Tarantino is generally full of crap, so you'll have to excuse me for not taking his word for it. And he's still whining again.

Does he ever stop whining? What did he think was going to happen when he put his movie head-to-head with the biggest movie on the planet?

Not spoiling for any sort of fight with you, March. I'm as jaded and scared as the rest of you about this. But I strongly believe that we've all (including these reviewers) been burnt enough by Lucas to have a healthy skepticism about any Star Wars-related film at this point. When there is actual positive press about it, I tend to believe it at this point. I just need it to be good. I don't need it to be world-changing or an all-time classic. I just want it to be good.

The Voyage Home is obviously the best of the movies. But Khan has enough testosterone and revenge-fueled machismo to make it a thoroughly enjoyable watch.- 466 replies

Really, you bring up Into Darkness? For the 50th time, Lindlelof isn't involved in this production. I expect better than that from you, March.

I don't get that feeling at all. You've obviously been reading different articles than I have. The skepticism has been real from the film critic community. It almost sounds like you want this to be bad.

Star Trek Beyond (the not The Search for Spock)
Duke Togo replied to areaseven's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I could use this same description to describe most of Trek before the first reboot movie. What has occurred since that initial reboot is pretty much in line with too much of what came before: sub-par and uninteresting. Trek didn't fail before this because it was too niche; it failed because it was bad. Khan and TNG were a long time ago, and they failed multiple times to produce anything of similar quality.- 466 replies

By "fans" you mean film reviewers? Because those are the people who are tweeting these things. And I'm not sure how you could think anyone would have blinders on after the prequels and special editions. We're in the jaded era.

Trek was all but dead before JJ came on board, and the first reboot film reinvigorated the franchise. You'd have to be living in a fantasy world of denial to think otherwise.- 466 replies
