Um, no. Final Fantasy VII outsold Dragon Quest VII 2:1. Its not even close. You can't even compare them in popularity, or what they meant to the gaming industry. Final Fantasy VII sold over 9.2 million copies worldwide, people. That's TWICE what most big games do.

I have no idea why he has taken the direction he has. For me, buying a Shirow work always meant that you knew you were getting something a little different, a little more out there, and that you would defiitely have to do some thinking to understand the story.

I didn;t catch what EXO said, bus, but I assure you I am talking about actual works from Masamune Shirow involving full nudity and hardcore sexual situations. He's been doing alot of that lately.

What does having an open mind have to do with this? Mortal Kombat was direct-to-video quality at best, and not what I would call a "good" movie. It just wasn't bad, like Street Fighter was. And I find it laughable that you think Spielberg's name being mentioned means he is attached to it. It means little outside of the fact his production company *might* be involved.

I'll say it again, they made the DYRL? movie simply because they thought it would make money, and for no other reason. There is no great scheme behind it.

Nope. Just goes to show that because they tack someone's name on something, doesn't mean you should expect it to measure up to their work. One thing I see alot of these days is promoting a TV show or movie using the Producer's name... as if they did the writing, acting, or directing. I laugh everytime I hear "From the makers of", which ALWAYS means the producers, and not the writers or the director.

Ya, I believe that was the title. He was the Executive Producer on it, but had no day to day input on the series. He just put his money behind it hoping to make money. That's the way the business works.

This means so very little. Spielberg was also attached to that lame ass underwater show back in the 90's, which went onwhere. Just because he looks over a script over or puts his studio behind a work doesn't mean he is "involved" in the actual movie making process. The movie could turn out to be a bigger turd than the Super Mario Bros movie. I see this as "no news here". Has a good video game movie ever been made? No. I give this movie ZERO chance.

I used to big a huge Shirow fan, but all he seems to do now is porn. Its a shame and a waste of his talent. What's worse is that they feel the need to make movies based upon his works that look nothing like his work.

I dunno, I've always assumed DYRL? to be a movie based upon the original series, made simply because it was thought it would be successful and that they could make money on it. I do not believe there was any thought at the time that it was supposed to be some sort of official re-telling, or a movie within the TV series. For some stupid reason, they later decided there needed to be some clarification out there for all of the morons who couldn't figure it out. I haven't even bothered to read most of this thread, but I think arguing over it is rather pointless. You guys just can't help but argue over some of the most stupid crap around here, can you? Why not argue over something that has merit, such as Macross 7 purely being a merchandising vehicle with a heavy emphaisis on fan service that borderlines child pornography.

Too bad for you... it doesnt' change the fact that it had more impact on the gaming industry than any other game in the past decade. It brought RPG's into the mainstream outside of Japan, and MADE the Playsation THE gaming console. To deny these facts is just plain dumb. Final Fantasy VII sold millions, and God knows how many people bought the Playstation because of it.

I still disagree. I can tell you right now I don't know anyone who's even played Super Mario RPG. Final Fantasy VII turned the industry on its head.

You're not even close, it didn't reach anywhere near as close the audiance Final Fantasy VII did. The sales numbers are just not there to back up your argument.
