Countdown to DYRL BD — 1984 Interview with Shoji Kawamori from Animage booklet: “Minmay: Ai Miemashita ka”

An oldie but a goodie.

As we await anxiously the release of Macross Do You Remember Love on Blu-Ray — and with all the, er, controversy that surrounds this —  let us take the time to recall some words from co-director Shoji Kawamori, which he shared with the editorial of Animage just a few months after the original release of the film in Japan.  To fans, the findings may seem a touch interesting…

Note: The title of the feature is “Macross Seminar”.   There is one more installment in a later booklet that I may eventually translate also.  This should not be confused with the “Super Dimension Seminar” currently airing on Tokyo MX television, there is no relation whatsoever.

30th Anniversary News Updates

Macross The MUSICULTURE

Firstly, some updated news regarding the upcoming Macross The MUSICULTURE musical.

In commemoration of both the MUSICULTURE (that word just HAS to be typed in caps!) and the 30th anniversary, Tokyo Dome City – the greater location that the musical will be held at (ie, its going to be at Tokyo Dome which is within Tokyo Dome City) is creating some Macross campaigns and promotions. These include a stamp rally within the amusement park (renamed the Superdimensional Amusement park – completing the rally gets you an original clear file), rides will be decorated Macross-style (the ferris wheel will be decorated with pics, gondolas will play Macross BGM, Sheryl and Ranka will have pre-recorded announcements, etc), Macross-themed food and drinks will be designed exclusively for the venue, and the store/shopping area will have a special Macross merchandise section.

This promotional campaign will be split into two periods. Period 1 is from Sept. 28 to Oct. 15, and Stage 2 is from Oct. 16 to Nov. 4.

More Sheryl Manga

The Summer 2012 issue of Betsu-Fure will feature the first 61 pages of the continuation of the ‘Sheryl – Kiss in the Galaxy’  manga. The 4th tankobon has also been dated for an October release. More details will no doubt be available when the Summer issue of Betsu-Fure hits bookstores.

GA Graphic Website to shut down July 31, 2012

According to this post, GA Graphic, one of the most informative websites on the net that has brought Japanese toys, statues and models news since 2005 will be shutting down at the end of this month. They are also responsible for bringing us the Master File Publications such as the upcoming Variable Fighter Master File VF-0 Phoenix, the two VF-1 books, one for the VF-19 and one for the VF-25. The Master File Publications will continue according to the announcement, but the editorial department for the web site is scheduled to disband on the 31st.

Sad news indeed. Thanks for the scoops, GA Graphic. You will go down as one of the better sites that are now gone. Sigh, reminds me of Zinc Panic.

Countdown to DYRL on BD — A look back at 2005’s “BS Anime Yawa: Macross Do You Remember Love” TV special

As we count down the days to the release of the greatest animated movie ever, “Macross: Do You Remember Love” on Blu-Ray Disc, I thought I would give people a bunch of homework to do in preparation for the big party.

“BS Anime Yawa” (“BS Anime Night Talk”) is a series of TV specials hosted by Gainax/General Products founder Toshio “Otaking” Okada on the NHK BS-2 satellite broadcasting service.  The programmes focus on classic and/or famous anime shows and act as retrospectives to contextualize these shows within the bigger picture of the evolution of Japanese animation, as well as providing some insight into the behind-the-scenes goings-on of the productions.

This particular episode, airing on June 29th, 2005, focused on “Macross: Do You Remember Love”, and featured Ichiro Itano, anime director Hiroyuki Kitakubo (keyframe artist on the original “Macross” TV series and movie), movie director Tomoyuki Furumaya and voice actress Rica Fukami (Myung in “Macross Plus”) as guest panelists.
