Over G Fighters

Recommended Posts

I've been playing the arena mode more often in an effort to find big bosses and unlock their planes. So far I have unlocked Big Boss mode and shot Saviola down 4 times. He has an F/A-18F in VFA-102 Diamond Backs' 50th anniversary CAG scheme. Awesome color scheme!

YF-23's will randomly show up sometimes as Bosses. They are hard to shoot down because due to their stealth nature, they will show up at times, and often dissapear from radar. Its annoying when trying to lock on a heat seeker since their signature seems to change a lot, making the seeker lose lock a lot. Nonetheless its realistic, so I think its cool that they did this. The best way to kill them is to approach from behind, ignore your gun cues to shoot, and use your guns to gun them down. Since they break lock a LOT since they are stealth, its best to disregard your radar calculations from your pipper, aim with the midpoint on the top part of the HUD(looks like a cross on some HUDS)or pipper if its broken lock, and fire.

I have been playing hell mode. I cannot find info I need online. Does anyone know the AOA and G limits of the Mitsubishi F-1? Is there a guide to its cockpit? I can't tell where the speedometer is. I cannot tell where the AOA guage is or if there is one. Its hard to understand the Hud. In attack mode I just see a 0 and 2 10's. I am not sure what they measure since they do not move. This is on the bottom of the HUD. In NAV it becomes a speedometer with different readings.

I hope an F-15C with AESA and HMS is in a sequel if they make one. The F-15C/D/J/DJ is potent in the game, I love flying it. A HMS would increase its lethality a LOT.

I got a 360 at the weekend, with a Copy of OverG (despite the salesman trying to warn me off - "it's not very good, you know". in a way it was cool he was trying to look out for me as a customer and not just trying to sell at all costs.)

Anyway, I;m back in the game and despite some annoyances (missions ending the air) i'm really enjoying being back in the Energy Airforce saddle- and particularly with the long draw distance compared to Aim Strike.

anyway, is it me, or is the F-15J a bit rubbish? I took it up on the first africa mission (intercept Mig-25s doing recon overflights of the base) and spent ages being singularly unable to kill any more than one of them because I just couldn;t find them on radar. Went up in the Tomcat, killed all 3 enemies within a minute...

what I do miss from Aimstrike, and this is part of the "doing the full mission" thing- is the tension of not knowing when the battle's going to kick off

Performance wise I LOVE the F-15J, but it is rubbish a bit in avionics. I've found that the super Search mode for its radar does not work well, either that or I am not doing it right. I think it narrows the radar's beam so that the targets you are aiming for have to be directly in front of you for a lock.

Sometimes what i will do is lock them up with a heatseeker and then switch to radar guided if I am far enough, the radar at leasts remembers at that point where the enemy is.

In the F-15J I stick strictly with the AAM-4/5 missles. Those are the best ones it can carry. Its basically the japanese equivalent of the israeli python missles with thrust vectoring, and the AMRAAM.

You might like the arena mode, its basically taking off, loitering, RTB,s miniboss fights, etc. Always starts the same but always has different results at times since different bosses show up. Basically just flying around and shooting.

The more I play this game, the more I love the tomcat. I've had so many missions now where it was insanely hard in the F-15, but the tocat's radar and pheonixes have saved the day...

The Tomcat's radar is definitely one of its best strengths in the game. The fast rate of target acquisition combined with the range of the phoenix make it one of the best "snipers" of the game.

Its easier to dogfight with the F-15 however once the battle becomes WVR. Its got so much power and regains speed easily. There is a definite difference to be seen once you start trying to line up for a guns kill in a tomcat. In the tomcat, its easier to get gun kills on planes that have less mobility, or if they are damaged and smoking. Maybe you boom and zoom fighters can give me some tips, whats the best way to line up gun shots for the tomcat? I like the F-15E since its radar is much better than the C/D/J/DJ models, however I think its power is less.

I want to master dogfighting in each bird, starting with the tomcat in the game since its the oldest plane you can start with, and possibly the hardest of the teen fighters to master dogfighting in. It does come alive b/w 400-600kts or mph, however when it comes down to gun kills, yoyo manuevers whether high or low tend to bleed the airspeed to 200-300 kts, and at that point flying the tom feels like tugging some iron.

I like using old planes vs new sometimes to add some freshness, which is why I've decided to learn the F-14A more in dogfighting before the B model, which is a way better plane by all comparisons.

**Maxing out G's(7.5) in the Tomcat more than 10-15 seconds+ while going mach 1 will DAMAGE the plane, the thrust gets cut to 50%, afterburner disabled, and the plane will start smoking. The F-15 will do this 9-10G's+ while pulling for more than 7-10 seconds, I learned this while in a rolling scissors with an SU-37 while going for a guns kill**

Ohm that reminds me- I made a very close-in guns kill on a Mig-25 at the weekend, and flew through the explosion, causing a flameout. got it to re-light, though.

Oh man that happens to me a LOT! I hate it when it happens below 1,000ft. At that point you're screwed. I had it happen when I was going 2 on 4 in my F-15C with Linda as my wingman vs 4 Su-27's. When I flamed out, the Flankers were still firing missles at me!

I'm still hoping it'll drop to 30 bucks soon, but might not be able to wait much more. My 360 library is very small, I need more games before Mass Effect comes out...

My brother got mine used from gamestop for $40. Oh yea I think you'll be happy with the Tomcat's stabilizer movement in this one. At lower speeds the spoilers control roll. At high speed, the horizontal stabilizers aid in rolling. (I remember that the wrong movement was a big peeve of yours in the recent Ace Combats)

Well, I bought it, and am not impressed. Really should have checked Ebay first, it's quite a bit cheaper there.

Anyways--my copy will be for sale very soon, I only plan to play through once or twice as quickly as possible. Cheap, make an offer! Otherwise it'll be traded in for pittance at EB.

Graphics, music, control, story, and the overall behavior of the planes.

I do like the very detailed and realistic way of choosing weapons, but I find far more negatives than positives.

I see. For me, I was looking for a sim that was a step above aerodancing/aerowings/aero elite academy, and Over-G was it. I didn't like the story, it was generic. I also wish all the missions started when you are on the ground, instead of always starting in midair(only the last mission of each campaign requires take off and landing).

I personally find the takeoffs very annoying, regardless of how close you are to the field of battle. (That's incredibly unrealistic IMHO----the target is 60 secs flying from the runway?)

Also, I really hate having to go all the way back to the scenario select screen, re-select mission, plane, weapons, fuel, and wingman's weapons and fuel---all when I really just want "Retry mission---but swap a Sidewinder for another AMRAAM". To make even a minor configuration change requires starting from scratch.

Also, the game seems very unfinished/unpolished. It suffers from "HD only" syndrome in that much text is very tiny. Also, my #1 complaint:

MAJOR overscan. I can't see the outer inch or so of what I should. I have my TV set to darn-near underscan, and no other game has ever had more than a pixel or two "outside" the screen. This game has multiple letters/numbers that are invisible. I never have any clue how many targets are left etc, since it's completely offscreen. The one game that REALLY needs a "screen adjust" option doesn't have it.

Also---sim? I took a minimum fuel, no weapon F-16C, put it in full AB---and it takes like 40 secs to take off, and can't climb past 40 degrees without stalling. I've seen block 42 D models do vertical climbs in half that time.

If a game is going to be realistic enough to make you sluggish when fully loaded, it better also let you perform like a demo plane when empty.

And, what "realistic" mission pits you alone (or with a wingman) against such numerically superior forces? They still have Ace Combat-style missions and requirements. (And I really hate how enemy planes can magically, instantly spawn 1/2 mile from you, locked on and ready to fire)

PS---HUD. Either it's positioned off, or the plane's in the wrong spot, or something, but if you use any view other than "true to life cockpit" the HUD is unreadable because there's always instruments or plane in the way. (And the true to life view is wrong anyways, I have sat in a full-fledged F-16C sim---and let me tell you, the HUD is plenty big and close, filling your field of view--it's not some tiny little 2-inch box way out there like they show in the game)

IMHO, things need to be either pure sim, or pure arcade. A mix just doesn't work.

I hate the respawn points a LOT, they seem to respawn either suddenly behind the aircraft you are supposed to escort, or somewhere behind you where they have the advantage. I'm not sure if these quirks were in Energy Air Force on Ps2(the predecessor), but it is annoying.

40 secs for a takeoff in a clean falcon is a lot. I'm not sure if it takes me that long but I'll have to see, I've never timed it. I usually run the throttle to 103% and lift the nose up@150kts. Or is it mph? I'm not sure. The mission requirements do suck on some missions, especially one in the 4th or 5th campaign, if you don't use a stealth plane for the last strategic mission on one of those campaigns, it is insanely hard to beat.
