  1. A port is when a game is recoded so it specifically runs on a new machine in the same way as any other game or app on that machine. We know AC5 on PS4 is a port because it does things that the PS2 version didn’t do (according to that 8ve read) xbox back-compatibility means that it’s the same code that ran on the 360, and the Xbox one pretends it’s a 360 to run using an emulator. The game runs “inside” the emulator. So- AC6 on Xbox one is exactly the same code as it was on 360 as far as I can tell. The 360 emulator in Xbox one isn’t perfectly plug and play- it needs to be specifically configured for each game, which is why you can’t just put a 360 disc in the bone and go. this is the first time I’ve really regretted not having a PS4 as I’d love to replay AC5 but I’ll have to dig out my PS2 instead
  2. Gripen-plus-LACM is definitely a great setup. LACMs have great standoff range and a big splash effect, which really helps missions where you're bith heavily dogfighting and doing CAS because you don;t have to spend too long away from the dogflight to blow up a cluster of tanks or whatnot. Typhoon-plus-8AGM should be good but even with upgraded special missile storage you'll shoot them all off in 4 salvoes.
  3. Considering that the d-pad doesn’t get used for anything as there’s no wingman commands, it would have been nice to have at least one button used for “target mission objective”. The mission with the arsenal bird was a nightmare trying to lock on to the right bit.
  4. Nicknames are used when creating aircraft builds for multiplayer (known as “sets”). Got as far as mission 12 today, which is pretty epic and nerve-wracking. Gripes seems to be my favoured mount st the moment. Typhoon was a bit disappointing.
  5. I'd agree with that. the opening mission is a bit low-key, compared to the enormous extravaganza that was the first mission of AC6. AC6's missions could really be thought of each as 3 missions mashed together going on next to each other on a huge map - this is more back to the scale of the PS2 games as you say. I've played up to mission 5 or 6. other non-spoilery thoughts: The tech tree is really awkward to navigate. It's very easy to get onto a different branch of the one you're looking at. (Decided to do the euro tree that starts with the Mirage so I can get the Typhoon. got as far as Gripen.) Game still does the annoying thing of making you get through a cutscene and the next breifing before you can get to the tech tree to spend your MRP on shiny new planes and stuff. Multiplayer is fun, but seems random (not many people on last night). pays decent MRP. I've been playing games in this series for 14 years and I still can;t tell which country and continent is which. Lack of a native photo mode is a shame. Overall though, really good.
  6. Us lucky Europeans get it on Friday. (Possibly Thursday if my supplier manages their usual "day early" delivery)
  7. Hugely looking forward to this. Had to come back here and post as it was this forum that kicked off my love of AC in the first place back in the heady days of AC5...
  8. and in the 50s/60s. they'd be "Sabrinas", like the cannon bulges on Hunters.
  9. That may be more problematic as Martini is an alcohol brand. I think that, should MP Jazz happen, it's more likely to be the stripes and "meister" decals.
  10. Not really- in reality the "group 5" version of the Stratos only ever appeared in the Marlboro and Alitalia liveries. The Rally version of the car, which was a fairly different shape (shorter, narrower, less extreme aero) competed in more varied colours, but not that many. Of course, none of those liveries turned up in Transformers. The marlboor one was only ever a diaclone and not a TF. Once the final pics hit, I'll be pre-ordering, assuming its not a disaster. I got MP smokescreen for Christmas and am really impressed.
  11. I'd like that picture more if they weren't flying to the scrapyard.
  12. Essentially, the tail section, including tail rotor of a chopper around the size of a blackhawk, but not one known about in the public domain was found and photographed outside the Bin Laden compound. The rest of the chopper was destroyed by the SEAL team in question after what's thought to be a mechanical failure. photo here: http://www.flightglobal.com/blogs/the-dewline/2011/05/secret-helicopter-revealed-in.html Beyond that, it's just a load of speculation and guesswork.
  13. You know I find slightly odd about those mirages? They're absolutely pristine. they look like they've just come out of the factory, from the shiny state of the landing gear. and the perfect paintjob. I've seen airshow aircraft looking more weathered....
  14. Not sure. I think it was new for the farnborough show. I was at the cosford show last month and it was a clean demo. if you think about it, it makes a lot more sense for the farnborough demo to have weapons loaded as it's a sales pitch, not a crowd pleaser like a normal show.
  15. RAF Tornado Navigator up to japes with spotters on training run in wales
  16. The harrier's played a great role in the RAF for the last 30-odd years, but the main advantage that VTOL offers - dispersed operations away from fixed airbases was very important in the cold war, but seem a lot less so now. VTOL/STOVL means massive compromises on the airframe side (in warload / fuel capacity) that I'm not sure are worth putting up with if there's a clear opportunity not to have to do it. With the new Navy Carriers being big enough to support CATBAR or STOBAR operation, I'm not sure there's a compelling case for F-35B with either the RAF or the RN. F-35A or C will be on most measures a more capable aircraft, and probably cheaper to operate. This whole situation is of course subject to UK government spending review, and there's no guarantee now that the both the new carriers or F-35 will actually be procured (though a conservative government seems less likely to cut them)
  17. Interesting reading about JSF- I was under the impression that the GE/RR engine had been axed a few years ago. while there's some merit in the competition argument, it seems unlikely that the benefits would pay off. plus it's not really competition if the same body is funding both sides... Reading some of the linked articles, it does seem odd that under the US system one branch of government can be trying to move in one direction, and another effectively just ignores it and spends lots of money on stuff anyway ("ah, a few more F-18s won't hurt"). I know the US system is all about checks and balances, but this seems a bit daft. I apologise if this is straying too close to politics. That JSF is getting less commonality is hardly a surprise - though I wonder how that percentage of common parts looks without the STOVL version (and how much of this loss of commonality is down to the weight reduction programs of the last couple of years). My personal take on this for the UK hasn't really changes in the last few years - the Royal Navy should drop the STOVL variant, stick cats and wires on the new carriers, and buy F-35C / Superbugs / Rafales / naval Typhoons. the RAF can replace their harriers with either F-35A, more Typhoons or maybe Gripens (Gripen would probably be quite a good fit for harrier replacement as it's meant for dispersed operation & has good STOL capabilities). this whole thing has dragged on that long now the the RAF also need to be thinking about what's going to replace The Tornado GR4s in the bomb truck role, as those are going to be positively ancient by the time whatever is going to replace them comes into service.
  18. I'm not David, but yes, it is, on the F-16. I don't think the FA-18 can do the same, though.
  19. I got the game a week ago and have really been enjoying it- I'm in the UK and my gamertag is RichXM655 if anyone's interested...
  20. [quote name='Chronocidal' date='Nov 20 2007, 11:24 PM' post='533398'Probably not likely though PC flight games get raked over the coals if they aren't real enough.. but I'm tired of consoles getting all the fun flight games, while PC's only get rivet-counter sims. There hasn't been a good fun-oriented air combat game on the PC since.. well, I would say X-Wing vs Tie Fighter or Freespace 2, but those are in space. There have been lots of sims with multiplayer, but the majority of them are WWII era. I know Novalogic had a series of multiplayer games with Mig-29s and F-16s, but that was 10 years ago now. The original PC version of Crimson Skies might fit your bill, as would Heroes of the Pacific. They're both Props-n-Bullets games, but both have multiplayer and both are very much skewed towards fun over realism.
  21. Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm, not RAF* and it's not quite the same thing- the replacement for the Sea Harrier (in the eyes of the MoD) isn;t the JSF, but the type 45 Destroyer. JSF is intended to replace the GR-variant Harriers. Sea Harrier was a pretty poor air-ground platform as it's very much a first-generation harrier with small wings, an old pegasus variant (and no capblity to take the the latest engines)- it was pretty much an air-to-air machine and the MoD thinks the SAMs on the type 45 can do the job - Sea Harrier's been replaced, just not with an aircraft. (*to be more accurate, the Harrier force was re-organised into a sort of RN/RAF joint operation, with Navy pilots now flying RAF harrier types (GR.7 and GR.9).
  22. Yay! Vulcan XH558 made it's first flight in 14 years today! get booking those airshow tickets now, UK MW'ers...
  23. First A380 delivered to customer, will enter service on the 25th. they expect to make 13 aircraft next year and 48 a year in 2009 and 2010.
  24. I don;t think this has been mentioned- British Airways seem to be hedging their bets by placing orders for both 12 A380s (+7 option) and 24 787s (+ 18 option)
  25. Prime is pretty good, though the shoulder articulation is a little lacking. Really, if you're going to get prime, you have to get megatron so you can pose them hitting seven bells out of each other...
