Japan auctions. Old Macross kits (and many other old anime kits) turn up there much more frequently than they do on E-Bay. You can order kits from Yahoo! Japan sellers using a proxy-bidding service like Celga. I got a couple Imai Monsters this way, probably paid around $100 for both after all (incl. proxy fees, shipping, etc.) was accounted.
