uh but in the series, when breetai tore off the front of the battroid of hikaru's valk, he was actually sitting behind in the chest, not the nose

its a cartoon not a tech drawing class. they probably did that so the pilot woudln't look all weird down in the crotch of the plane. anime MaGiC

Take a look at the Valkyrie design again, the cockpit is on the fuselage, not all the way to the front of the nose. Also, the chest plate slides down, partially obscuring the cockpit in battroid mode. Add to that, like has already been mentioned, the animation in SDF Macross is very low budget and a lot of mistakes appear in the animation.

Yeah, crotch piloting in anime only just caught on with Z.O.E.

If you look at the 1/48's and use DYRL? as a reference you can see that the seat does only rotate. Looking at the 1/48 trasformed to battroid without the heatshield will show that if the seat rotated the pilots head would be just behind the front of the airbrake where the hinge is. Accordingly, when Roy gets the cockpit panel smashed into him by Kamujin, Kamujin hits the airbrake and roy gets smashed from front and slightly above, reinforcing that the cockpit does in fact only rotate.

I remeber that animation sequesce... the bit where the chest is ripped off. Those episodes were always some of my favorite, evgen if they were in the American Robotech franchise.

If I remember correctly... The heat shield is connected to the chest plate, it would have to be cause that's where it decends from (behind the air brake). It stands to reason that if the chest plate were torn off, then the heat shield would go too.

This means that the cockpit was equaly exposed, from all around. The monitor that decends over the rotated pilot seat obscured part of Britai's (sp?) face. He can be seen peeking around the dead monitor (remember, the head was smashed first... so the monitor had nothing to show). The cockpit would never live up to it's namesake by being like a ZOE mech (what is WITH that anyways?)... The pilot is in the VH-1's equivalent to our solar plexus.
