  1. some of the VF-1 customs I had build the painted surfaces caused a few tolerance issues and had to be sanded down further so they would move freely and not scratch. As you said maybe the clear coat is a lot finer and doesn't present an issue.

Ahh yes. Painted surfaces I think have potential to cause transformation issues.

That has me thinking about the customs paints I plan to do. I don't have an air brush and would be painting the large surfaces with Mr Hobby spray paint. Hopefully I can be light handed with the paint so it isn't a major issue. :)

  2. Glad you guys like it.

Incredible for a pen work, it really is like a airbrush work. How did you paint the head the color is perfectly matching!

The real touch markers are super forgiving. There is even an eraser pen if you botch up badly. XD

Just a little here and there then some rubbing with a cotton bud and magic. Also a bit of clean up with your finger works well too. Fills in the panel lines nicely and leaves nice shade also.

After finishing the YF-19 I went back over the VF-1J again as I had held back a bit initially as I was scared of doing much.

On the head I actually I didn't get the colour mix right and the colour is slightly off compared to the Yamato brown plastic. In my original clean photos, I posted ages ago (somewhere here), you can see the difference. After the weathering the colours have evened out nicely.

So glad it is finally warm weather again in Australia. I couldn't spray top coat when it was cold and damp.

Have to keep working at my VF-1A MP so I can spray it before autumn/winter rolls around again. HAHA! :p

  3. Here is my Yamato VF-1J MP (brownie) weathered and stickered.

This was actually my first work, as I used it as a test bed when I was starting to weather my valks - It was less risky (already dark colour), and not a big loss if I botched it up.

I actually weathered about 75% of it, then the VF-19 Adv arrived and I went on to that and then the YF-19 there after.

So now with those 2 completed I went back and completed the weathering on the VF-1J MP, applied all the stickers and finished with a top coat.

Some of you may have seen my VF-1J MP previous, as it is not the stock Yamato VF-1J MP. It is actually a custom I had to create as the Yamato one was very hard to find, and actually more expensive than buying a VF-1A MP Movie + VF-1J assembly kit. This way I ended up with an assembly kit + VF-1A MP head to make another custom later on.

    Used:

    - Gundam Real Touch marker

    - Gundam marker silver colour

    - Mr Hobby Top Coat - Matt

Currently working on a VF-1A MP to accompany mr VF-1J MP

    Now on to the pictures!

  4. Question.. so when you apply the "top coat" I presume that is a clear coat of some kind yes? But wont that then upset the tolerances for transformation? I know some parts are very tight as it is.. Sorry im not big on modding or modelling.

Hmm. I'm not sure if it would cause any issues. I use Mr Hobby Topcoat Matt, and the coating is very fine. Since I only coat the top surfaces (not the inner parts, gap between connections, joints etc) it shouldn't be an issue. For me the top coat gives the toy a more model look, and also to lock in the weathering and stickers (for Yamato/Arcadia)

Eggy, I had such a long debate about what mode I would do the weathering in . Ultimately though, fighter won! Would love to see your pics!

    Here is my YF-19

Has been reposed since that photo as I moved desk at work. :p

I should post a new photo.

I went crazy and did a binge buy and will be doing all the valks including

VF- 25 S with super parts

VF- 25 (alto) with super parts

VF -117 cannon fodder and alto both with super parts

    VF-19 advance

    Busy month! And rediculouly expensive!

    WOW! Lots to do.

I got a big backlog too. Lots of old Yamato VF-1s to work on - just finished my VF-1J MP and working on a VF-1A MP at the moment. Also a VF-25A MP in the backlog too. I love the brownies :p

  5. Always interesting to hear the different methods we use to beautify of valks. I've been using some dry brushing to show wear on the metallic/darker parts, and then Gundam real touch markers for the shading and panel lining.

I'm also interested to see your weathered VF-19 Adv. I weathered mine also, but mostly in battroid mode, so if I transform it back to fighter or gerwalk there will probably be some parts that are not weathered and also missing top coat. :p

The opposite for my Arcadia YF-19. It's in fighter mode, and was weathered that way too (also because I busted the wing, so it's permanently glued to the root)

  6. Glad you guys like it. :D

As much hard work it is along with the grumbling about the stickers etc I really do enjoy the process and I'm slowly improving my skills. The end results makes a big difference displayed.

Very nerve racking when first going at it with the weathering markers. I'm never 100% sure it'll look the way I've envisioned it in my imagination/expectations based on other people's work.

Hope when my son is older (he just turned 2 on weekend passed) he will take an interest in this hobby and we can work on models together :D

  7. Arcadia YF-19 weathering and stickering completed! All sealed with a coat of Mr Hobby top coat matt.

On display at work next to the Bandai VF-19 ADVANCE.

Also thanks to Chaotic Yeti for the adapter. Works great! Had to look up in the old thread where it attached. LOL

Will take some better photos of the detailing tomorrow and post in the YF-19 thread

  8. Thanks. It's an extremely great feeling to have a complete collection. It's an added bonus that it arrived today exactly on our wedding anniversary. My wife saw it and said it looks the same as my VF-1J Max. Lol.

My wife says all my Metal Build Gundams look the same.

Exia, 00, 0 (prototype colour), RX-78, Unicorn (in Destroy and Unicorn mode), Freedom.... Really???? I think it is just her way to say "you got too many Gundams. You don't buy more" LOL

  9. <snip>

    Here's my review of Shin's VF-0A.

Aaahhhh! Video review sooooo good! Why did I watch that DX

Wonder if I will be able to afford the VF-0A CF... AUD almost below 0.70 USD and below 75 JPY. Analysts predicting a drop to 0.60 USD.... T____T

  10. After seeing the review for the RG Red Frame I'm super hyped for the MB version. I wonder how Bandai will do the back of the shoulders because the all red shoulder with red detailing underneath looked always weird to me. I'm also looking forward to the markings on it. I'm hoping they print the logo on the shoulder and leg.

If any of the previous MB line is an indication it's going to have plenty of tampo printing with all the bells and whistles in terms of markings. :D
