  1. New machine is on the way. I'm going to have to hustle now, because that was an unexpected expense. Either way, gotta love the backburner. There's a way you can set it up to do background renders on a single, non-networked machine, and it works pretty well (provided your computer doesn't shut itself down automatically all the time). Like the user icon, man.
  2. Aaaaannnddd, speaking of not getting finished. My computer is totally kaput. Gots to get a new one. Drives are totally intact, though, and so is the data. Just need a new system. So, my work is now on hold until I can get a new machine up and running. But, there are some pretty awesome things in the works, speaking of fan built stuff.
  3. good point. not really the place to get into all this (not that I mind a little OT here and there), but I agree with your comparrison and point. Back to the drawings!
  4. Yeah, I was thinking that no matter how stubborn Alto is, I find it hard to believe that a high-school boy would be that resistant to a hot girl's advances. Wait, a hot interstellar pop sensation's advances. Regardless of how the whole series will shake down, and what will happen to the triangle, it's pretty bizarre that homeboy hasn't chosen a girl yet. One of the things that always struck me, from watching SDF, even when I was a kid and I was watching that other show that people here will yell at me for mentioning, was that Hikaru changes his mind. So often, shows present relationships as these epic YES OR NO things, instead of going for a sloppier, more nuanced approach. I respect SDF for being a little more realistic. I feel like, Alto has plenty of reasons for not getting involved with Ranka -- she seems young, she's his boss's little sister (big reason), there's a hot superstar interested in him. But he doesn't have many reasons for not getting involved with Sheryl -- she's bossy? It's a front, part of the superstar persona. She's pushy? Again. She's a flirt, and maybe he doesn't trust that she's not messing around with him? I dunno. Don't get me wrong, I really like Frontier, but I feel like Alto's behavior is pretty unbelievable. It's very extreme. Either that or he's got such a fear of confrontation, that he won't make a decision one way or the other, because of what that will mean. He might play like he's this determined stoic pilot who only dreams of flying, but I suspect that he, much like Sheryl, is all about presenting a big front to the world.
  5. Cool. I love to see the progression of a project. Your avatar and the sketch are both really good. I think in retrospect, I can sort of tell that one part is sorta tacked on to the other. Sometimes, it's best to get down the whole gesture of the entire pose, face and body, rather than working in pieces. It helps to create an entire attitude and energy in the picture. Also, to be completely fair, your art is better than mine is at this point, I just wanted to offer some feedback that might help you get to the next level. I agree, too, it has a classic 80s feel, like the hand painted stuff you'd see in an end credit roll, or in an art book.
  6. Your renditions of Alto always make him seem more available and approachable than he actually is. Make him seem like a nice, and likable guy.
  7. Absolutely stunning coloring, brushwork (digital, yeah?). The face is very cute and expressive. The pose could be more vivacious, though. Know what I mean? It's gorgeous art, but the body could be more alive. I can't quite articulate it, but it's the same problem an illustration professor saw in me, and now I've got a good eye for it.
  8. Word. Glad people like it. It's only going to get cooler in the future, though.
  9. This is my favorite of your works so far, S-Girl. The loose sketch captures a sense of fluidity that is sometimes missing in finished pieces. The paintjob is, as usual, pretty impressive.
  10. I'd like to see if I can get this embed tag to work. If not, here's a link to more of the stuff I'm working on:

Fantastic. Did you draw the original flats/line art, trace the original photo, or just apply some effect? I'm starting to feel like I need to liberate the unused wacom from my office, and find myself a copy of Painter.

How did you do that? Which is not to say it's so awesome I can't fathom how it was possible, though it is about that awesome, but what I mean is, what technique did you use? What medium or media? That's one of the coolest things I've seen in a long time.
  13. turn signal is broken. Very awkward.
  14. Uh oh, what's that new-timey flight suit doing in that old-timey cockpit, huh?
  15. I swear I keep putting embed tags in the HTML, but "Save HTML" doesn't actually seem to save it.
  16. Yes, yes it can. Awesome find man. I'm going to see if I can tweak my model now with making me tear my hair out. I've been having so many computer issues these past few days that I almost walked away from the chair forever.
  17. Aw man. I just tried activating the little HTML button next to "Insert Special Item", copied my embed code, and then saved the html, then posted, and I got nothing. This after rendering that movie kept TURNING MY COMPUTER OFF. Not crashing it. Not freezing it. Turning it off. Stroke of bad luck over here.
  18. Huh, I can never get YouTube embed tags to work here... how'd you do that? Meanwhile... since rendering more movies seems to be a crashfest, here's some stills. You'll note that the proportions are not exact on the model. This is because every picture I've found has totally different proportions. No real schematics to base it on, just sort of approximating all of the different references I used. Color comes from this here model.
  19. This is a cel shaded work in progress DYRL VF-1 ejection seat. You'll note that there are a few missing pieces. This isn't going to be the highest poly model in the world, so I might ignore some of the bolts and fasteners. Obviously the underside of the seat is not yet done.
  20. What do you do, professionally? Can we see some of your paid work?
  21. Looser sketches may very well address that issue. One thing that I learned, actually very recently, by taking an art class (for the first time in years and years and years) is that the devil is in the details, but not in the way you might expect. When I focus on details, and outlines, I tend to lose the fluidity of a pose, so I've started really focusing on the gesture, with loose, rough lines, leaving out tons of detail, until the pose looks alive, then I go back in flesh out the picture. It's very counter to how I original learned, which was with outlines. Again, I think that you've got a great handle on your coloring and shading and your faces are gorgeous. You also have a knack for portraying the clothing in a simple yet effective way. That's something I have yet to master. Just loosen those bodies up and you'll be posting art that will blow people away.
  22. Not crappy. You're tripping.
  23. I think your digital coloring is gorgeous. I also really liked your hand drawn color job. The face is very pretty and delicate, and you've got a great grasp on the shadows and highlights. I also really liked the Alto picture. My one critique of your Sheryl picture is that she feels a bit static -- like, perhaps a bit stiff. Know what I'm saying? That said, I think it's a really good picture, I just kinda wanted to put a little constructive criticism, because I think you've got great talent.
