  1. I never had the old Matchbox ones as a kid (only one I had was Rick Hunter, but I so desperately wanted all of the MOSPEADA/New Gen ones).

I finally picked some up online a couple of years ago and, maybe it's the kid in me finally getting the toys he wanted from decades ago, but I still like having them there in my display cases.

This is a fascinating aspect of the anime industry I was completely unaware of.  Are there other egregious examples outside of BGC?

I wish I remembered some to offer.

I know I came across probably a dozen or so a few years ago, which made an impression on me at the time, but I don't remember them specifically or where the site was where I found the comparisons (it might have been a post in another thread on here?).

As it stands, I feel like an idiot, making a claim that I now can't substantiate. Sorry.

Wow, that's just beyond the pale:blink:

Either Youmex bought the song rights entirely -- in which case the original composers weren't properly credited -- or Kōji Makaino has a LOT to answer for.

I've actually become frustrated a few times when I've come across discussions where everyone seemed to be harping on what geniuses some of these composers were... with that air of "If you had REAL knowledge of music, you'd know how superior this Japanese composer was"... while somehow ignoring how much of these works were flat-out copies of American, German, etc. music at the time.

Thanks for that.  I don't begrudge them going with that scale -- the CMs, Toynami, and Sentinel Legioss are all the same size, so that's where the largest demand is likely to be -- but having already sunk thousands of dollars into Moscato Invid kits at that size, I was hoping to have Invid toys that would at least scale with my CMs ride-armor figures (if not the MegaHouse or Sentinel figures)...

    CM'sMospeada.jpg

Even a Scout/Eager at 1:18 would be a big toy (a little bigger than the Matchbox/Playmates, at least), but the size would certainly justify the cost. ^_^

I will always love my CM's ride armors, and the ideal for me would be to keep filling out those display shelves with more in-scale figures. Sadly, looking at the newer offerings from a variety of lines, I think those of us with collections at that scale may be moving into the minority.

Indeed, I totally agree in regards to the concept vs. execution. The toy itself is quite a strange beast(the front wheel for example)..yet I still find to be one of my favorites!

I mean, a legendary video game company makes a Aramaki ride-armor toy...whats not to love?

P.s. Good luck with the Scepter + fingers crossed on the new Tri-Charger!! *I think CM's was planning one that never happened.

From what I remember, there was a sort of blank profile pic of the Tri-Charger that CM's was supposedly working on. I was really looking forward to it, since I was one of the few that actually liked the CM's ride armors, and was excited to have a Tri-Charger at the same scale to display with it. I keep all of my in-scale Aramaki stuff (MOSPEADA and BGC) displayed together.

    Woah Thanks for the link!

    I did a triple take when i saw the Zillion Tri-Charger !!!

I'm lucky enough to have the 1987 Sega Tri-charger toy, But o m g  this prototype is blowing my mind! A true "unicorn" dream Toy imho

*Anyone have any info on this*?

I feel very fortunate to have two of the Sega Tri-Chargers (though no RidingScepter, since the only ones I found were so overpriced, and in such terrible shape, that I just couldn't bring myself to buy them).

While I truly love those toys, it's more the idea behind them than the execution.

I really hope this new one comes to fruition, and at a decent scale for display.

  7. I got my Sentinel Legioss about a week ago. I put off opening it until today, since I had a few projects that I'd been procrastinating on. Finally opening it was my reward to myself for motivating to get off my backside and get some things done. Now that I've opened it and gone through all the modes, I have to say...

I'm a huge fan of this. This is definitely my favorite Legioss that I own by a long shot. The engineering on it is fantastic, everything clips nice and firmly into place in plane mode, the metal-to-plastic ratio seems just right, with a good, hefty feel, and this is pretty much exactly the size that I like these toys/collectibles to come in (though I dread the size and price of a potential TREAD). It also looks gorgeous in all modes, in my opinion, and has the right amount of paint and decal apps applied.

I will admit that I didn't even attempt deploying the landing gear. All of the tolerances on this are so tight (as in, REALLY tight) that I just don't want to risk breaking anything. Besides, I'll never be displaying it with the landing gear out. I also went straight to the instruction book for transforming it; usually, a big part of the fun for me is trying to figure out the transformation on my own, but, again, due to the tight tolerances and how you don't know if a part is about to release from a tab or is about to break, I just didn't want to risk it.

The little rider figure is super floppy and the arms fall off if you look at it wrong, but, as the owner of a very sizable number of different Megazone 23 Garlands, I've learned to appreciate ball joints that pop off instead of breaking (this is my view of the Sentinel ride armors, too).

Finally, and most importantly, a HUGE thank you to @Sildani who came to my rescue when my Amazon.jp preorder was canceled. Great to deal with, very helpful, and very very fair. I really appreciate it. Thank you!

  8. Does anyone have any links for ordering the new book into the US?

I probably have everything except for the Genesis Breaker material in at least 4 other books already, but... I feel like the completist in me will be kicking myself down the road if I skip it.

    Thanks.

  9. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to find a reasonably-priced blue Sentinel Legioss?

My preorder through Amazon.jp was cancelled by the seller "due to Coronavirus shipping restrictions" a few weeks ago. I assume I'm stuck waiting for a re-issue (hopefully).

I have all three of these, and they're still on display and still some of my absolute favorites. The core figures aren't really parts-forming, except for the lower fairing/backpack and exhaust becoming a weapon. The parts-forming is mostly storage of weapons and accessories, which I am totally ok with.

These are great figures and what got me into 3p.

    6?! Wow!

Any chance a mandatory global-scale shut down might possibly give you some free time? That is...unless you are part of lifesaving infrastructure in which case your workload just went Super Saiyan

Possibly. The 3-d printing is sort of a side gig for me, but my main job is 95% work from home anyway, so the shutdown hasn't really affected me yet. On the other hand, if clients start getting worried about the economy and get nervous about spending money where it isn't absolutely necessary, then yes, I might find myself with some free time there.

I know I'm 10 years late on this, but just in case anyone was contemplating picking up the CM's ride armors, I've created this helpful image so you know which toys were in which boxes:

Still frustrated that by the time I got the metallic Yellow it was too late to send away for the special box and parts.

Engineers have a bad habit of telling people the most ideal way of designing something with no consideration for cost and production/assembly processes (which at the end of the day ends up being cost too). Almost everything can be engineered better, so it's real easy to point fingers and say "That's not right, I would have done it like this". If they were presented with the same question with the addition of "It has to be done for $XX.XX" most of the time you will get an answer like "I don't know" or "That's impossible".

I'm an engineer. But, my company actually has to produce things that hit a target price point. I'm the lead designer and the bean counter. That means a lot of things I would like to do get left on the table. If I could go at some of my products "no holds barred" their price would at a minimum quadruple. That doesn't mean I can't put out a quality product. It's arguable that my stuff is the best in it's market. It just means that if I could unload both barrels the product would be out of this world trick.

I'm not suggesting that "hinge" shouldn't be better. "Not breaking" is the lowest bar in engineering. At a minimum that should be met. If it can't, either don't produce it, or raise the price to cover the cost of getting it right.

What's my point (I'm rambling)? I guess it's that a lot of engineers tend to think in a vacuum. They also like to show off a bit too (I'm as guilty of this as any engineer). When listening to an engineer it's best to take the 30,000ft perspective.

During my engineering days, I sometimes did like materials with like, but sometimes dissimilar made more sense. if you knew that there was going to be wear, but one part was easier to replace when it wore out than the other, then you made that part out of the weaker material.

Not saying that's the case here, but that was the theory.

Of course, other times, it's just cost. You want to make parts plastic, but it financially makes sense to use off the shelf metal pins, so you use those with plastic surrounding them.

So what is the "definitive" garland to buy at the moment? I've waited for the EX Gokin forever but it seems to be universally disappointing. I don't mind polishing joints and if that makes it THE Garland to get I'm in but if there's a better one out there I'd rather prioritize that.

    Great write ups @Bobby

I'm very happy with the Arcadia one.

Honestly, I like all of the others too, but don't think they're worth it unless you get a really REALLY good discount off the asking price. The Arcadia is, in my opinion, worth what they ask (considering the niche market, of course).
