  1. Are you sure about that? It did make him an icon for an entire industry, and maybe one of the only people cited as a creator rather than, or in addition to, a director, voice actor or other staff normally involved in just an English version of any foreign show.

And remember, at first he genuinely wanted to bring Macross to the states. It's just that somewhere down the line he decided to make a lot of unfortunate compromises and never looked back.

    lol creator

So if i take some random collection of manga white out the speech bubbles, add, own dialogue to connect them and give it some half-assed named, i can credit myself as a comic book creator? coolo

Unfortunately for him, Mr. Macek's legacy is how a person can become an icon by stealing other people's work and taking all the credit.

And as far as the whole "How should Macross fans view Robotech?" I view RT as the thing that did turn a lot of people to Macross, however even if RT never existed, Macross still would've been popular. Considering that RT doesn't exist in Japan and the Macross franchise has been doing fine ever since it has been isolated in Japan post-Mac+, I think western anime fans would've eventually caught on to Macross. I never saw nor heard of RT before i got into Macross. I found Macross via the internet with a torrent of DYRL. So, i don't think it is a bad attitude to pretend RT doesn't exist, because (for Macross, anyway) it just plain doesn't matter, completely inconsequential.

  2. Since this board is more active than the official Robotech forum, I have a question.

What exactly is protoculture in the robotech universe? I'm watching Robotech for the first time and just started the new generation and it seems like even the writers didn't know what they were talking about.

Its culture, fuel, flowers, food, technology and sometimes it even seems like they are reffering to software as protoculture. What exactly is it?

Its like they use it as some sort of all purpose element to describe things that don't really belong within the individual series that were combined.

Protoculture is everything, and it is nothing

    The beginning and the end

    love and hate

    life and death

    sweet and savory

    2% and soy

It is whatever the writers are thinking at the time

And Thus spoke the prophet Thomas Yune

  3. So after wanting to see it for years, i finally watched Ballistic Kiss, one of only 2 films directed by Donnie Yen (the other being Legend of the Wolf) and i have to say i was very disappointed. The fight scenes were made up of too many closeups and quick shots and this movie took the standard action movie trope of infinite ammo to an absurd degree. The story was okay, but otherwise this movie is better left unseen.

Since i watched Ballistic Kiss, i also went back and watched Legend of the Wolf. There was a huge difference in quality, while BK was disappointing, LotW was very enjoyable. I think it may be because Donnie was trying to make BK as a John Woo style heroic bloodshed shoot-em-up movie while LotW was just a kung fu movie. Obviously (based on his recent work doing action directing) Donnie is suited to kung fu fight choreography and directing.

  4. So, i finally picked up this game yesterday and played about 6 hours.

The thing that stood out the most was how much i dislike the battle system. I absolutely hate not being able to give commands to my other party members. And the game is over if the leader dies and the other 2 are still alive, thats just plain dumb.

As usual Square puts out very pretty visuals and epic storytelling. FFXII's Vaan was a horrific failure of a main character, so this game gets a one-up on that department. I kinda like how Lightning is a pragmatic tough girl and Snow is a wannabe hero. Is Vanille supposed to have an Australian accent?

  5. Saw this cool movie from the 70's called Duel to the Death about a duel between the best swordsmen from china and Japan. Since it was a hong kong production, the Japanese are the bad guys (not the Japanese duelist though) but the main Japanese Duelist is awesome. Lots of crazy ninja action and a really good fight at the end.

  6. I'd like to mention The Street Fighter with Sonny Chiba (no not the one with Van Damme and Gomez Adams). I've only seen the US dub, but i still love the movie. Sonny Chiba is so badass and cool in this movie, he does some truly mean and ruthless things and he's the hero! Maybe I'm not used to such an antihero in a martial arts movie, but this movie certainly has an exploitation movie feel to it.

Did anyone know that prior to Bruce Lee's death, they were planning a Chiba vs Lee movie. That would have been epic. The greatest Japanese Karate star versus the greatest Hong Kong Kung Fu star would've surpassed all other great teamups.(Lee vs Norris, Chan vs Li, Hung vs Yen etc.)

  7. Okay, so how about Francis Ford Coppola getting the riegns of the Robotech movie. At least during the production of "Bram Stoker's Dracula" the cast and crew actually had sessions where they actually read the book at his urging.

    LOL

Francis Ford Coppola to direct some run of the mill popcorn sci-fi movie??? Yeah, that'll really compliment his resume. The Godfather, Apocalypse Now and Robotech.

  8. I said it before and I'll say it again: Roger Christian is the best director to do a LAM of RT. Just look at his credentials:

And let's not forget his 2000 masterpiece Battlefield Earth.

    Hmm...

Now that you mention it RT fandom does remind me of Scientology.

  9. So got Rin from Fate/Stay in both Revol and Figma (Meant to get Figma but ordered the revol accidentally, so THEN ordered the Figma).

If this is the quality of their non robots Im not impressed., Movement is meh, it falls apart if u look at it funny and the jpoints are really ugly.

    Fail, Revoltech.

the robot ones are easier to stand due to bigger feet and the joints are less noticeable on a robot figure. The non-robot revoltechs i have are dante, panzer cop, revy and saber. Saber is big and hard to stand even with the display base, dante is good, but his arm fell off, i really like panzer cop and revy though.

Although i believe Rin is in the fraulein line of revoltech, i don't own any of them, so i don't know how different they are to the regular line.

  10. Watched the Storm Warriors last night (AKA Stormriders 2) and i really liked it. The story wasn't as in depth as the first one, but the CG was way better (well, the first one was made in "98) and the action scenes were much more intense. Though you should know that some of the action scenes were derivative of 300, although it didn't really bother me. I'd rather see a movie rip off 300 than another movie rip off the Matrix.

They got the 2 stars from the first movie and after 10 years they still look just as young (40+ year old guys passing for 20 something!) I don't think the stars, Aaron Kwok or Ekin Chung, know kung fu, but they did a pretty good job at the fighting scenes. Unfortunately no Sonny Chiba this time, Simon Yam plays the bad guy this time. What can i say about Simon Yam? Good actor but sucks in fighting scenes.

So, i'd recommend this movie if you really like fantasy fung fu or over the top comic book-like action. I would recommend seeing the first movie first just to get acquainted with the characters and the world, though.

  11. The Tony Jaa movies.. On Bak 1&2 and the protector. Haven't seen two on the basis that one was sub par.

Cool fight scenes for the first 10 mins then you trnd to fast forward.

I just saw Ong Bak 2. So much better than the first one.

Sure, the plot was cliche and there was serious pacing problems with a bit of confusing random plot points, but the fight scenes were awesome. For a movie with such good action i can forgive a throwaway and confusing plot.

Tony Jaa did the action direction and choreography and it was really good for a young guy like him (unfortunately he did the story too) I think he'll have a good career in the future at the very least directing and planning action scene. I really liked the scene where hes fighting the guys while laying on the ground and i found the scene while he's fighting around the elephant to be really innovative.

Overall, a good movie only for the action scenes; dont watch it youre looking for a stable plot.
