  1. Huh? I thought they're about the same size, VF1 being a little shorter as it doesn't have turbine engines. I guess I mixed up with the VF0.

Definitely not as small as a F16 compared to a F15 right? The F16 is absolutely petite when placed side by side with the Eagle.

The VF-1 is silly small if you believe the official size. Only 1 Falcometer, or 50 feet, in length; the same length as an F-16. Of course, it was almost always drawn much larger in the original series. In reality a VF-1 or a Zentran would not be able to hold a person in one hand--or at least it would be a much different fit than always depicted in the shows.

I'd like to see Yamato make a Regult and a Spartan. But I doubt they'll make either.

  2. I'm guessing non-transforming battroid mode only. My guess for first releases are VF-25, VF-27 & VF-1.

Rumor says the first Robot Damashii VF-1 will be the VF-1J wearing GBP.

  3. I've really never gotten that. The differences between the two are mostly skin-deep cosmetic changes. I don't see the DYRL Macross looking any less like a ship in cruiser mode than the SDF:M version. If anything, the changes to colour and details made the DYRL version look more like a battleship to me.

If the world only had one battleship, and nobody important expected to actually have to use the thing in their own lifetimes as anything more than an advert for global unification, it wouldn't be painted grey.

  4. how does gutting out all the potentially important stuff behind the pilots seat on a plane and rendering it incapable of being used on combat missions make less sense than taking a plane and painting it? Considering they were willing to devote a dozen or so CF's for the ceremony I'd think they would be willing to take one more plane out of rotation long enough to paint it, fly it during the wedding then restore it's old paint job. And if for some reason there was an emergency situation that required the need for that particular plain to be deployed in combat they could easily re arm it and send it out still wearing the wedding scheme, it's not like paint will diminish the planes combat capability.

Now taking a 1J and gutting the cockpit to make room for a second seat makes no sense. It would probably take just as long if not longer to completely revamp the cockpit to accept a second seat and still work than it would to paint a plane, but unlike paint, the modification to the plane means it can't be used in combat until you fix it which could take days (and the chances max's 1J would be needed in an emergency is much greater than a random 1D).

The whole idea that they would remove some avionics and stick a second seat in the VF-1J, and it is just that--only an idea, is predicated on the assumption that the VF-1 series would be designed for just that ability. It wouldn't be the first fighter designed with modular avionics packages and the ability to quickly accept a second seat. And it makes sense that modularity would be a key feature of something like the VF-1, where the whole thing is made up of so many major and minor parts joined by transformation mechanisms and moving frames. All of this is just logical supposition, but admittedly unlikely to be what the writers had in mind; if they even gave it that much though at the time, which they probably didn't.

Remember also, directly after the aerial wedding ceremony maintenance crews likely would have set about returning the 1D or 1J or whatever it was to normal. But hours later the same plane was available for two seats. If it was just a matter of stripping some easily-removable gear and locking in another seat, that's something that could have been done (again) on Max's request while the pilots already on station were scrambling. Of course, maybe the paint on the 1D was still too fresh to allow them to strip it/repaint it right away, so it was left sitting there and that's how it was available. But that wouldn't explain why the cockpit often looked as small as it did in the animation, why the front and back torso plates on that fighter were the standard versions and not the VF-1D, and why they didn't transform in combat. If you wanted to find an explanation other than animation error, which admittedly is the most likely explanation, a swappable second seat fits what is seen in the episode.

As for sticking a 1D cockpit onto his 1J, do we even know for sure that you can do that? The cockpit section may be detachable but it may not be compatible between J and D models considering how there are big differences between the main body of each plane. And they'd still not be able to transform the plane until you swap the nose sections back out again so once again it's not usable for combat missions, and where did they get the extra 1D nose if they're too strapped for planes to spare a whole 1D?

Since the Macross had to function as a closed system and still maintain fighting capability, it makes sense that they would salvage as much of wrecked fighters as possible. That would mean lots of left over Valk arms, Valk legs, Valk cockpits and other parts, all being cycled through repair/restoration and waiting to be plugged in in place of more more recently damaged parts. Given how quickly they continued to lose entire squadrons and the fact that they were able to maintain a fighting force, I'd say it's a given that the VF-1 is decently modular, and that wrecked and damaged fighters constantly contributed to the materials they used.

  5. I thought that the fact that the Virgin Road Valkyrie had a -1A head was an animation error?

How would a two-seat -1A work anyway considering there's only one 'head camera'?

I think Yamato really needs to start including extra heads with their fighters. How cool would it be to have the Virgin Road two-seater including both a -1D head and a TV -1A head? That way it's accurate BOTH ways.

    Vostok 7

Lol. They can make a jet that can transform into a robot but they can't split the feed from one camera to two monitors?

The episode actually shows both 1A and 1J heads. (The 1J head is mostly just seen from behind, but is definately a 1J head and not a 1D.) The real tell is that the chest plate is always the standard one, never the 1D version. Plus, it wouldn't have made much sense to paint up a whole VF-1D, which most likely would have been assigned to other pilots or actively used for training new recruits, just for that wedding ceremony. And even if they were going to paint up a 1D just for that ceremony, why make it look just like Max's 1J instead of giving it some special wedding scheme, like all white but with red trim on one side and blue on the other.... I always thought they just stripped some avionics and plunked a temporary second seat into his VF-1J. (Notice a second seat added in such a manner would preclude transformation, and Max never changes modes in that episode, unlike just about every other time he dogfights.) Or maybe they just repainted the cockpit from a 1D and swapped it onto his 1J.

  6. Fighter planes, regardless of matte finish paint, are smooth, and will look very shiny or reflective from many angles.

But more to the point, these are toys. Expensive ones, besides. And a textured surface exposes more surface area per square centimeter to light and oxygen than a glossy one, which means faster aging/yellowing, and less time before the plastic turns brittle. (As if they didn't have enough survivability problems already.)

  7. I wouldn't say that, the paint jobs on the Soul of Chogokin line is immaculate and those figures make Yamato Valks look like Happy Meal toys. Perhaps they've had trouble on the DX's but Bandai can put out first class paint jobs.

    Truth.

Yeah, Bandai's SOC line was my introduction to truly beautiful high end toys. I didn't really expect the VF-25 DX to be quite up to SOC standards since it's not part of the line, so maybe that's one of the reasons I wasn't disappointed with it. Regardless, it's an awesome toy in its own right and it displays with my SOCs far better than it displays with my Yammies. Actually I've found Yamato valks generally don't look good with any of my other toys so they usually get a shelf to themselves. I hope Yamato puts out some glossy versions of their valks some day. :)

Word. I fail to understand Yamato's predilection for textured plastics and dulled, flat surfaces. Makes no sense on toys in general, and even less sense on Valkyries. And it rises to the level of travesty on Max & Millia variants.

  8. I'm not buying anything from Yamato until they announce a Spartan. I understand that this might be self-defeating, as this boycott-of-one might well put Yamato out of business, but at this point I feel drastic measures are called for. Hopefully they will realize their folly before it is too late.

  9. Maybe if the 1/2000 SDF-1 sells well, Yamato will be convinced that there is a market for ginormous Macross toys and finally make that 1/60 Monster :p

They'd best not make a Monster before making a 1/60th Spartan. There would be rage. And incalculable gnashing of teeth.

  10. Wasted a few minutes in paintshop and came up with this:post-407-1241634924_thumb.jpg

I think I'd rather just stick with the froggy face than bother with a mod, but I do wish they had made the main sensors green rather than red.

Ehh... I'll probably not buy one anyhow unless they rerelease these things in a few years with all the classic markings tampoed on. And dammit yamato, make a Spartan.

  11. It'd be cool if they at least released some regults and other enemy mechs in their GNU-Dou line. Though they'd best start with a Glaug or q-rau or something else, what with the revoltech regult already availbable. (I can't stand that revoltech stuff. Cheap rubber chew toys the lot of 'em.)

Not nearly as big a risk and if the scope and quality of the line was good enough it'd likely see strong sales. I'd sure as hell buy them.

  12. So, I'm actually thinking thinking about getting the Super Ostrich. It would be my first version 2 yammie. But if I get one I'd probably like to get rid of that rainbow coating on the canopy. Is there a safe and reliable way of removing that film?

  13. Curse you Bandai. I already have two of the first issue VF-25F Alto DX and two of the first issue VF-25S Ozma DX.

That means as they lack the correct holes, I can't use the Super Fold Booster with any of my first generation DX.

So, if I want to mount the Super Fold Booser on an Alto VF-25F, I'm gonna have to buy an all new Ver. 1.5 with the extra holes when they are released in April.......Grrrrrrrr! These things are not cheap either!

Really short sighted planning there Bandai.... !!!!!!

Starting to loose patience with these shennanigans. Hopefully Bandai will redeem themselves with the Armoured Pack for the VF-25S.

    Graham

Lol. Years of working with/buying from Yamato and you still buy first releases? Who be shortsighted, yo?

  14. It makes sense that the hangar bays on the SDF Macross would have been pressurized. Hell, it even looked like they were flying into a giant airlock when they entered those. But they would have had to build some big ass space-wasting longer-time-to-launch-taking airlocks into the Daedalus and Prometheus if they wanted to have functional pressurized hangar bays there. Improbable. Alternately, they could pressurize the hangar bay between attacks, but that would mean not constantly cycling fighters through CAP duty, which we know they did. Impossible. So hangar deck scenes most likely depicted the hangars aboard the Macross proper, like the one they used when micronized Exedol was taken aboard the SDF by that recon pod.

In any case, all the directing/last minute repairs/rearmament/salvage of mecha taking place on the flightdeck of the Prometheus or within or near the various airlocks/doors/openings all over the hull where Destroids arranged themselves during battle would have required space-suited ground crews.

But hey, why are the main sensors red on the Yamato 'roids insteada green?
