  1. F^ck, how long after the Japanese release was the subbed HK release, 1-2 months? I cant' wait!!

The third film hasn't even been shown in Hong Kong theaters yet (it' s been confirmed recently that it will be officially released but no official date yet). As such, similar to the last two films, you won't see an official HK subbed DVD until after the theater run. I say just get the Japanese version

  2. Another new^^

    Don't worry, it's coming

BTW, does Western audience still care about Jackie Chan films? The Spy Next Door still left a bad taste in my mouth, granted it was an American film

And yes, this will be his last stunt action film. Doesn't mean he won't make any more martial arts or action films. Would love to see him in Expendibles 3, even if just a small cameo

  3. Accordingly, the reason why the Dragon Ball Z anime was heavily dragged out was because the manga took much longer than the anime to produce, hence why the studio needed to come up with filler episodes on its own while the manga production was trying to catch up. Given this, I think Kai is definitely worth a watch.

Dragon Ball Z was a big hit back then because the fighting styles and the concept of Super Seiyan were quite creative and revolutionary at that time (similar to the wire-fu and bullet time of Matrix). Its influence was clearly evident in many copycat animes during the 90's.

  4. So i just saw the two Red Cliff movies, and all i can say is the great John Woo is back. After nearly 2 decade of making crap in America John Woo finally goes back east to make great movies.

This movie is awesome for those who are either fans of Woo or fans of historical epics. Great battle scenes, great cinematography, great music, and great acting. Tony Leung once again gives a powerhouse performance. I especially liked the emphasis on strategy and battle tactics that Leung's army used to defeat a much larger force. The only way this movie could've been better is if Donnie Yen was in it.

I'm really hoping John Woo has given up on Hollywood and makes movies exclusively in China and Hong Kong.

I also recently saw a Jet Li historical movie called Warlords. I liked it, it put more emphasis on the politics in the imperial chinese military.

I don't know if it is just me or does it seem that a lot of big budget chinese historical epics are being made recently?

I find it really interesting how foreigners are able to appreciate the two Red Cliffs much more than mainland Chinese. I personally consider the two films quite an achievement from an execution and project management point of view. Given the scale and number of actors involved, I am pretty amazed that John Woo delivered a solid story about friendships and a few epic battles.

Romance of Three Kingdoms is very well known in China, and most people who complained about the movie either tend to be very focused on the discrepancy with history or have extremely high expectations. Some also made fun of the dialogue, joking about the homosexual undertone in the relationships among the male leads. I think these are all minor points. If you look at other Chinese epic battle films, they all suffer from an unbalance of story vs special effects, kind of like the Phantom Menace. Plus, I think the Chinese audience are going thru battle film fatigue, too much of the same stuff being dumped onto them.

Looks like some dudes in Hong Kong have already done a mock up of what the real life version would look like. In case you are wondering, the guy in the pic is a relatively well known actor in Hong Kong

  6. Occasionally you do get bad castings, which fracture easily.

But then again, it could just be a case of the guy in the video using too much brute force.

    Graham

I remember watching you being quite rough with your Yamato valks and everything was still perfectly okay. Can't imagine what kind of brute force this guy used (I currently work in China, so can't really watch the video on Youtube)

  7. Just saw a VF-25F renewal in Tai Yuen Street, Wanchai, which is near my office, in the toy shop on the right side of the street (I forget the shop's name). Price was just under HK$2k.

    Graham

Can somebody remind me when are the renewal Super parts supposed to be out? Its so long ago that I placed the preorder that I've forgot.

    Graham

I think you are referring to the toy store named "Hong Hing", run by a quite well known lady. Didn't realize you work in that area.

Anyway, for whatever reason, the Hong Kong distributor never receive an official license for Bandai Macross products, which has often led to unstable supply and speculative prices. Having said that, I do think the HKD2K price tag is more of an exception. Seems like many toy store owners got "burned" by the overstock of 25F and were reluctant to take the same risk with the 25S.

  8. It was on at the cinemas here recently, but I passed, as it got promototed more as a juvenile/teen film for the Twilight crowd. Is that not the case then?

    Graham

I had the same impression when I saw the promo in Hong Kong and dismissed it as another kids' film. My American friend told me it's not the case and highly recommends it. Guess I will give it a try at some point.

  9. Hoping a fellow member can help.

My friend is going to Hong Kong this coming week and I asked her to pick up a vf-25s renewal for me. Can someone let me know which location in Mongkok (ie Richmond centre, In's point, CTMA) they have recently seen it in and on which floor the store(s) are located on?

    Thanks!

Try second floor of In's Point. That's where I got mine, but not sure if they still have stock though. There was a major shortage when the 25S came out (probably due to overstock of the 25F previously). Also, be prepared to pay around HK$2K for one. Hope it helps!

  10. Watching Jon Chu talks about GI Joe2 , you can really sense his passion about the franchise. I'm so glad they chose him as a director. Wish I could say the same about Transformers. While I don't expect the movie to be anything more than a popcorn flick, I will still enjoy it a lot more than the first one.

  11. Two currently on display (my first of which I accidently damaged the sharp points on the LERX through my carelessness :( )

The other 2 are 'just in case' spares :D

The VF-17 is my all time favorite VF.

    Graham

Thought you once commented that toys are not made to last these days. Why keep them in boxes? :D

I couldn't find any Hong Kong stores that have the 17S in stock. Guess will have to wait for the reissue.

  12. Just picked up a second one for HK$1,248 at a shop on 2/F Oriental 188 Center, Wanchai. Box was a bit dinged up on one corner, but I don't care about the box.

Checked the toy, was in perfect condition. The storekeeper had at least 3 more I. Stock.

    Graham

I picked one up on the second floor of Sino Center today. I believe a big shipment just arrived today. The price is slightly higher than that of Graham's but I got to choose a nice box :p

BTW, is there a way to lock the chest piece into the nose cone? I push the cockpit all the way to the backpiece, but it won't stay in place. Thx.

  13. poo, poo and double poo ;(

YF-29 just arrived at Oriental 188 Centre, but each toy shop only getting 2pcs and all already reserved for preorder customers.

No time to go to Mong Kok to hunt tonight.

    Graham

I hate getting Bandai Macross stuff in Hong Kong. There is always an initial shortage of stocks due to Bandai Hong Kong not having the official license for Macross.

  14. What a toy!

Thanks Yamato for the incredible progress you have made since you first started the crappy 1/72 YF-19 back in 2000.

Took Yamato 11 years to reach perfection. 11 years of producing average Macross toys at ridiculous prices, but we as loyal fans bought the toys until someday Yamato could give us the best Macross transformable toy. This day has finally come.

I thought Bandai was the only company capable of this kind of toy engineering, I was wrong. Now bring us a new YF-19 and I will consider my money well spent.

Wait till we get an arm breakage report shortly after release... sorry, I couldn't help it :D

  15. Not only does Renegades follow the same formula as TF Animated (a rag tag team led by a washout, non-traditional aesthetics, etc.), it also seems to suffer the same fate of premature cancellation, only earlier. I really like the show, and the toys on display at the recent Joe Convention looks really awesome! Resolute may have all the hardcore action and adult elements, but Renegades has well written stories and strong character development. What a pity!
