    Omegamon
    Kiryu

Ikaruga. I have no background on this, what IP is this from – anime, game? And what's the story behind this particular mecha?

The Omegamon and Kiryu are both looking fantastic. I'm really glad they're going for something closer to the classic original looks rather than some of their busied-up redesigns over the years.

The Ikaruga is I think the hero mecha from the manga/anime Knight's and Magic (the apostrophe is necessary), apparently an isekai about a nerd being reincarnated into a world with mecha and magic.

  2. On the subject of reusing molds until they're dust, does anyone know how Hasegawa keep their molds in usable condition? I know polishing of molds happens occasionally, but surely there must come a point when they have to just make new molds altogether, right? And in either case, are the new/polished molds different enough to be noticeable? Like, are original VF-1 kits from 2001 better-fitting than their 2026 reissues (to say nothing of even older molds, like IIRC their 1/48 F-14 molds taken from a defunct competitor that originally made them in the 70s)?

  3. Yeah, I'm definitely in for the Tornado Messiah. That's one less Bandai I'll have to track down (and fumble around with fragile parts).

And more 1/48 is always nice, I'll grab one just to make sure I have one. C'mooooon, VF-4...

  4. The VF-25 is such a good design. It was so unfair to the VF-31 to have to follow up on that.

That said, I already have tons of the 1/72, from both Bandai and Hasegawa. I don't know if I need another, in a smaller scale, that's likely less nicely molded. (The YF-29 was a bit of a disappointment and soured me on this line's take on the newer designs.)

it appears that even the story of Chinese-made RAM will not be able to rescue the market.

That was always a fool's hope anyway, at least in the short term. Long term, more diversified supply will allow the industry as a whole to better absorb demand spikes and prices won't shoot up as much as they do now... but that's also assuming that RAM usage will return to normal or even stay steady at a new elevated normal.

Either way, this AI bubble can't possibly burst fast enough.

Agreed, Orange's take on the series does seem a little darker then the OG anime. When you mentioned bailing on Stampede I figured you didn't finish it so just wanted to give a heads up on Stargaze.

I want to say that manga fans felt Stampede was 1) closer to it in tone despite 2) being it's own loose adaptation. Are either of these the case? I didn't watch it past a few episodes - nothing against it, I just lost track and never got back to it. I thought it was fine for a property I was never super into, but it did indeed bring me back to the OG anime, which I think definitely stands the test of time given my nephew was watching alongside and having a good time, too.

Netflix' "The Beast in me" was the best miniseries I watched in the recent past. Good writing, beautifully shot, and the two leads are killing it in every scene. Hitchcock reloaded.

Certainly seems more interesting than that other thriller miniseries that I saw the other day, His and Hers. Started out strong, then ended on a stuuupid twist that made the entire endeavor not worth it at all.

  8. Rerelease. This came out long after the 1/72 weapon set did; a quick way to tell the difference, since they are so similar, is that the micro-missiles for the missile box come as individual missiles on the 1/48 (pictured) and a single piece on the 1/72.

IIRC the 1/48 also excludes the pilots since they are included with the base 1/48 fighter kit.

  9. Just got back from seeing this. It's a more straight forward, slightly less ambitious but also slightly less opaque film than its predecessor. It keeps up the consistently good quality the other two established. I hear the sequel has already been greenlit, which is fine in my book; I'll be looking forward to it.

FAT CAT released an upscaled Real Grade God Gundam to 1/100 scale, along with some effect parts that are seen in the RG's Expansion Set (sadly, no horse):

Any places to get this? The only store I can find is Gundamit. Not that I dislike them, but just I would have expected to see it elsewhere as well. Maybe not USAGS, but at least Gundammodelcenter or whatever its new store is.

    And now A.O Z.

1/144 and 23cm, that's pretty big. I'm not super familiar with the AOZ designs, is this thing new to the reboot? From the original?

I’m pretty sure it’s the Kotobukiya kit. I think it was more of a continuation of the HLJ complaint subsection of this thread

Ah yes. In hindsight the context clues are obvious. "Hasegawa Death Stranding kit," oof.

  12. Caught up on Demon Slayer. Mild spoilers, mostly tagging for a wall of text:

    Spoiler

Still pretty enjoyable, though blitzing through it, you get pretty tired of its formula. I found myself skipping through good and bad guy backstories alike. Some of them, if necessary, could have been told in much more interesting ways; and others just aren't necessary at all and would have benefited the story to omit or, at most, be just teased at.

My brother keeps trying to hype up Zenitsu, and the character just isn't working for me. His personality sucks, his sleeping gimmick sucks, his story sucks, his power... doesn't suck but is wasted on him. His "growth" throughout the entire series being that he seems to have finally married the two sides of his persona right at the climax would be fine and great if it didn't also happen arbitrarily and without any (literal and figurative) conscious effort. I think I would buy it a bit more if he just demonstrated the slightest bit of agency. He is the way he is because the story needs him to be that way, is how it feels to me.

The Hashira training arc sucks. I think it could have worked if just structured differently. The story felt compelled to inject Tanjiro into every bit of the goings-on when really it wanted and should have become a true ensemble piece, hopping to and from characters in order to explore the Demon Slayer Corps as a whole. Interesting dynamics, interesting parallels and contrasts, etc. One element that elevated the Entertainment District arc for me was the two demons being a narrative foil for Tanjiro and Nezuko, and although the story kind of dampened my enthusiasm a bit when it almost literally pointed it out and did actually spell out the comparison, more things like that still would have been welcome during that arc

The story seemed to forget that there were compelling characters worth following besides Tanjiro. I'd have liked to see more time spent with Inosuke, Nezuko, Shinobu and Tamayo, etc. (Or yes, even Zenitsu, if only to perform some much-needed character damage control.) Follow up with more of Inosuke being "tsundere-ly domesticated." Depict a day in the life of Nezuko: her struggle against her new demonic nature and/or the kind of fraked up morality of hypnotizing her to see her dead family everywhere and/or the why and how of her mentally regressing into a child and slowly coming back from it. What is it like for Shinobu working with a "sworn enemy" in an area of mutual expertise and affection? And so on.

Which sounds kind of hypocritical. In my earlier post I said that I appreciated the show essentially not stopping to smell the flowers, and yet here I am now complaining about it not stopping to smell the flowers. Except this was the season for exactly that, and instead it meandered and fumbled its way through... this. More than anything, what bothers me about it is that it feels exceedingly clumsily planned and hastily trotted out, and I can only speculate as to why when the manga was already finished and they (ufotable) could have made any number of adapting decisions, including not adapting this arc at all and opting for something original and/or better.

But blah. It eventually finds its way back on track, and it's been a fun ride overall. Here's hoping the finale trilogy movies meet expectations.

  13. The humor isn't landing for me. I initially thought it's just because I'm old, but after some more consideration, I think the show is just bad at it. The timing is weak, the dialogue choice is poor... It may have worked better for a younger and/or more Japanese audience, but I'm tuning out those sections.

Zenitsu is annoying as duuuuuuuck. I'm eagerly awaiting the story getting past this early phase so he can become tolerable.

  14. I know I'm super late to the party, but I finally watched the first ten or so episodes of Demon Slayer. I find it kind of refreshing, being so blunt and straight forward. I think it was someone here who described it as being exactly what it says on the tin, and no truer words have been spoken.

These opening episodes don't drag things out at all. We go from character introductions to inciting incident to training arc in pretty quick succession. I also appreciate that, for the most part, the show seems to eschew the intricate magic/skill systems that other shounen come up with. No super saiyan modes, no Amakakesomething-something from Hiten MitsuThis or That style to master, no chakra and the various elemental affinities, etc. Just... build up your endurance and strength through months and months and years of rigorous repetition. Unexpectedly realistic and unglamorous given the fantastical setting. Even the special breathing, the closest that comes to evoking said magic system, is really just slight window dressing on aforementioned rigorous training.

I finally see the elemental effects in action, and seeing it just reinforces how funny the controversy is surrounding it. I love it.

Are you using hobby search? I have only used HLJ for preorders. I’m looking for alternative and was curious about your experience with hobby search.

I've used them a couple times. Never for multiple pre-orders and/or combining pre-orders and in-stock, though, since IIRC they don't consolidate orders the way HLJ do. Or if they do, it's not explained in a way that I was able to comprehend and take advantage of. If you're going to order these and only these, then they're a solid legacy choice.

Amiami are similar, though IIRC you're able to combine in-stock items with pre-orders coming out that same month. Me, I've gotten into the habit of mainly ordering old "used" model kits from them, so I don't have to worry about pre-orders and shipping and combining orders, etc.
