  1. Yeah, bought the testors when I was younger and even as a kid I knew it was garbage.

I don't own it but I would guess the Hasegawa is the best out there now. RS models and Valom have been putting out some other early US Navy WW2 aircraft kits so keep your eyes peeled for a release. I've been meaning to get the Valom Devastator too.

  2. It's actually pretty good. There are a handful of Academy examples that, I'm led to believe, are just older hasegawa offerings but with recessed panel lines. The A-10 is one example. This is another. Apparently the Hellcat is yet another...

Thanks for letting me know. That Hellcat you speak of is actually my user avatar.

Nice work on the '48th Mospeada figs, Derex. Sorry to hear about your loss, it has been a rough year for the modelglue family as well. We just have to keep doing what we love to get through sometimes.

  3. p.s.s. another, another thing: For Macross purposes.

Fans of Mac Zero could easily use the jets featured in the Anime (F-14, Mig 29) and mark them accordingly with spares from their decal boxes. Might not be an option for some, but I happen to have a TON of decals hanging around and will be buying said kits for said purposes.

  4. Cripes! i don't suppose anybody is planning on a HLJ purchase soon.

Oh yeah... I've made two separate purchases already.

I'd seriously considered the F-2A. But I wanted to to get some JASDF decals to do it up proper like. Turns out that'd cost more than the F-2A/B kit that comes with some decals already!

All the rest of the kits are crazy cheap though!

I am going to just airbrush the national insignias and the kit comes with full stencils. But that display scheme I saw looks tight too.

    Added the 1/72 F4-EJ today, 1st F4 kit I have bought in 23yrs.

Is that kit engraved Crazy? I haven't looked into that one.... Yet. :)

I highly recommend the 1/72 Hobby Boss Rafale. The quality of the finely engraved details is easily on the same level as modern Hasegawa products, and it comes at a very affordable price. The only letdown are the decals; I got a third party sheet for my kit.

Whoa nice one. Thx for the recommendations. It's now on my list!

  5. And a quick preview of an Academy companion for a little dio I'm planning:

How do you find the Academy example of the corsair? I am on the fence about buying it. I have a ton of the 1/72 kits they make but there are a few that fall short when sitting next to a Tamiya lets say. :) I have the later Korean war Corsair from Revell AG/Italeri and it's not too bad. But I can see a definite step in quality when comparing the Tamiya P-51D to the Academy version.

  6. Ordered the 1/72 A10 and the 1/72 AV-8B. Will go well with my 1/100 VF-25 & VF-29 Ranka.

Ha! We think alike. The Ranka 1/100 is presently paint-free in my display case awaiting it's turn under the airbrush and fending off unpleasant looks from the 1/72 stuff. I ended up ordering the 1/72 Tamiya A-10A even though it's an Italeri re-pop.

What I find amusing is how Hasegawa specifically reboxed a few kits from other companies to do these. That 1/48 Mirage 2000 kit isn't a bad build, and that price is cheap.. just, it's also really really old.

I wanted to get the Rafale in 1/72, but after reading about the age of the kit... not so much. Raised panel lines have become less scarey to me since getting the tamiya photoetch saws, but I'd still rather buy a modern engraved kit before going through the trouble of revamping an older one.

Sometimes the crazy voices win however, esp with prices where they are.

  7. Hey guys,

    http://www.hlj.com/scripts/hljlist?SaleGroup=SALE1403IMASAIR&header=IdolAirSal314

I thought this would be useful for anyone wanting to pick up a nice Hasegawa kit on the cheap that comes with gaudy decals.

I got a Flanker and the Mitsubishi F-2A along the rest of my order. Prices were so good I couldn't pass on them. Beware, that there are some reboxed brands wearing hasegawa labels in amongst the crowd. Hence, I didn't buy the Berkut since it's a Zvezda.

    Cheers!

p.s. another thing: the decals provide you with stencils so all you would need are national insignias and unit markings (if any).

  8. Hopefully we'll see some Super Parts soon as well. I really really really want a better option than the Bandai Super parts...

...and an armoured, and a tornado, and a battroid. :)

A guy can dream. But anyways, I like that Hase' went ahead with this esoteric (read: one-off) example. That's a good trend for us model guys.

  9. I'm waiting to get a curio to put my models in before I build the Yamato. I'm not building a $600 kit to have it get damaged or dusty.

    Good call! :)

I need a 24"x 24" wide display case... should be about 6' tall too, to hold all the battroids. The 4'sq base should be enough for a 1/72 B-52G right?

Nice job on the small stuff!

  10. Hello gents,

I am looking for a VF-1J head to go on my "S" equipped VF-1 Battroid. I am willing to part with (trade for) either the "S" or "A" heads or will pay for the "J" head if you are willing to part with it. The sprue will be identified as "J" if you are in doubt.

I will pay postage both ways on trade, and will pay asking price + postage on a purchase.

    Thanks!

  11. All the above points are 100% reliable and valid. If certain kits were available through Hasegawa I would snap them up in a heartbeat. Being a collector and builder of kits, I tend to try and complete* a series. This has left me with no other choice but to supplement my Hasegawa collection (which is nearly complete to date) with newer generation Bandai kits (VF-27 etc). The drawback is the inconsistency in style between the types, which I can deal with so long as they are all within my specific scale criteria: 1/72. :)

  12. Any plans to paint your model? I'm positive some Isamu Dyson colours would look ace on this, even a variation of that paint job would be cool. I like what happens to the wings in battroid mode, but the fighter mode doesn't do it for me personally without some more modification.

Cool ideas and experiment though! :)

  13. anyway, besides the head, what is/are the other difference between this and VF-25?

According to what I can discern, the head and cockpit are different. The YF-25 Prophecy model has a two seater cockpit that looks as if it was meant to hold two occupants regularly like the VF-0B/D.

  14. With all the talk about the YF-19 I decided to order 2 kits(currently backordered).

HLJ? Not to start bashing or anything like that, but you might want to look elsewhere. I had multiple occasions where I went on ebay out of frustration to get kits that had been back-ordered to my private warehouse for more than the indicated timeframe... much, much more.

The 1/72 Hasegawa kit is of course one of the nicest out there, don't know much about the 1/48. Are you planning on doing up the Dyson demonstrator colours? Vanilla would be an apt description! :)
