Children's entertainment... Yesterday and Today
Agent ONE replied to Agent ONE's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
No, I would say its a little fruity, but that show was too lame to have sexual overtones. I put even M7 above that. -
Don't worry. Someday they will make an anime about door knobs, and you will be king. Eh, I am really not running for King... Possibly "Anti-Christ" or at the very least some kind of biblical reference. I believe CROM has enabled me to become powerfull to put some foot to ass, but who's ass? I don't know yet.

I would have figured you as a HE-MAN fan? Actually no. Thought the plot was lame and episodic, besides he is huge and all, but (another compalint of mine having to do with children's entertainment) the show was filled with unrealistic physiques. I mean he just kind of looked strange, besides my Sister had this Skipper doll that had the same haircut as HE-MAN. Just kept me from caring about it. -

No man, it aint that way... When I was 6 I was watching Transformers, Macross, and GI JOE... Now 6 year olds watch Pokemon, U-G-oh, and the Winkies. Super sissy. -
Fair enough. If it IS a show intented for the 6-12 demographic or the 10-17 demographic, it doesn't really matter that much. The reason I beat up on it so much has nothing to do with marketing... It has to do with the fact that as a Macross fan I bear the shame of the M7 affiliation.

What!? Posting on an internet forum doesn't make you a good authority on child upringing? Surely you jest. People on the internet know EVERYTHING. All kidding asside, there are some extreemly inteligent people who are members of MW... People who have opinions that I value greater than many so-called professionals. -

AWESOME!!! Just to prove the great kids that Catholic schools produce: I went to Catholic school!!!! Your children will be destined for greatness. -
I don't really like other anime so mentioning all that stuff is wasted on me. Only anime I have ever really liked was either Macross or Golgo13.. I have however worked on the marketing of various anime products, therefore am an expert. As for the things I mentioned as to why M7 is targeted at kids, I am a marketing professional I majored in Marketing, got a masters degree in marketing, and have marketed many products for all age groups including children, and more importantly I am consistantly successfull in my marketing efforts. It is not your place to judge what I said, it is out of your element, and beyond your understanding. The funniest thing about ALL who argue with me: Your arguments are just emotional and angry, there is no real substance there. Keith makes up statistics with double negitives and other falacies of logic but his stupidity is obvious to even the casual thread participant.

Wow, great feedback guys. I am glad I am not the only one who feels this way. I just wonder if anything is going to change... I mean if I see this tragedy, and others see it, then WE can't be the only ones who see it as a problem. A few weeks ago I was walking through a park with my Girlfriend, I overheard 2 kids arguing over which one got to play "Tinky Winky," which is a character from one of these sissy shows... It was sad. I am thinking if I ever procreate I am not going to even have a TV for the kids to watch. Just movies probably. -
Why don't you just go watch that old WWF cartoon & quit wasting everyones time? First of all, I don't waste ANYONE'S time... I protect the image of Macross fans around the world from those who would mar its image by embracing that girly-man M7. Any new Macross fan could happen upon M7 and think it was a show for the worthless and weak promoting the worst in small children (its target audience). Then... as these new fans are in the depths of dispair, a shaft of devine light is seen in the distance... For they bear witness to the power and glory of Agent ONE. The Shepard, who is the only one who can protect them from sissyness... Their faith is resotred. For this Macross fans love me, you should love me, love me like I love myself. I ME Second of all, the WWF had a cartoon!? I always men rolling around with other men was your deal man. Third, M7 actually had decent character development, Millia was crazy as ever, but that was consistent with SDF-M, they made Max LOOK like a dipshit douche-bag, but his character was good. As for the others, they were developed well. I think they all smoke pole, but they were fully developed as pole smokers.

HAHAHA... You didn't respond to anything I said... Just typical Keith crying.

They DO refer to me as their "aweosme" uncle... Their mother (my sister in law) refers to me as the "bad" uncle... I get them M80s from overseas, got them all brass knuckels, got them drunk for the first time, got them all interested in Van Damme movies. When their parents go out of town sometimes they come and crash with me. I tell them they are allowed to watch any movie as long as there is a high body count, and their mother WOULDN'T approve of it. -

Yeah, but thats different... The kids are older when they play violent games. I am really talking about the 6-14 age group, I don't think they play Grand Theft Auto. By the time they get to 14 if all they have been imersed with is sissy stuff, their chances or becoming normal are greatly compromised. -

I have a few young nephews, when they hang out with their awesome Uncle Agent ONE we talk about all kinds of stuff, but mostly what kind of media they are surrounding themselves with. As these kids have grown up I have attempted to keep track of their favorite shows and characters they like. These kids of course like to pick one or two role model/favorites from these shows which makes sense, after all they are kids (It IS mostly the 6 to 14 age group I am referring to) I am sure you guys all make the same comparisons, I mean WE (Most MW’ers) probably wanted to grow up to be someone with a personality and presence like Major Focker, or Optimus Prime, or Lieutenant Falcon, or General Flag, or Wolverine… You get the idea. The disturbing trend is back in our day of children’s programming we had featured characters with aggressiveness, pride, resilience, drive, ambition, and UNSTOPABLE determination, but even more importantly they were tough. They didn’t take crap from anyone. They also were featured in programming that was realistic in the respect of human nature. People are by nature selfish and that selfishness can, at times, turn into evil. Our heroes weren’t just fighting with the main enemy in the show; they were fighting against the easy of doing things, fighting against the path of least resistance. After all isn’t it easier to watch someone rob a bank, than to attempt to kick some ass and stop the robbery, this is the attitude OUR heroes were doing battle with. The trend since we were kids has been one of featuring heroes (if I must call them that) who are just worthless weaklings who promote taking the easy way out… I am not saying ALL of the shows follow this path, but most do… I don’t know all the names but just a few, Pokemon, Barney, Teletubies, Winkies, U-Gi-OH, and I even put Macross 7 in this category. Plot-lines are unrealistic and peace and dancing while holding hands is ALWAYS the way things end, which is teaching a lesson of fantasy, NOT reality… No one is ever confrontational, there is no real problem solving, and everything is a compromise, as much as we would like to believe that is a real reflection on life, it isn’t… Nothing in life is a compromise; there are those who take and those who get ripped off, that’s life. There is nothing but accepting those who don’t quite fit in with their peers, so they are allowed to be strange… What the fu(k. These kids are going to grow up to be the biggest pussies ever, they won’t be able to cope with general human interpersonal issues because they have been bombarded with the message, ‘its OK to be weak… its OK to not confront… its OK to never address my fears… its OK to never conform… its OK to rebel against authority… Qualities that make even Bugs and Daffy look like Arnold. As a marketer and a person that exists in this society in one way I can’t wait till these kids come up in the corporate ranks… they will be my fodder, my kill, my prey. WE will be the LAST tough generation… Though this thread COULD take a political turn, I don’t want it to… Keep your politics to PM if you must say something of that nature. -
Justin Timberlake is the man! N*SYNC was a client of mine, and they totally impressed me... Bad ass guys. Whats wrong with casting good looking people, would you rather see George Castanza, and Cosmo Kramer in the movie?

No Schwarzenegger = Not a good movie

Not me... I sold em all.

I thought that movie made him more of a bad ass than ANY of the bonds did.

- Co-marketing of jpop stuff and its general demographic - Amount of co-marketing and co-branding - Lack of violence in the show in comparison to other shows aired at the time in Japan - Lack of mature material in comparison to other shows aired at the time in Japan - Enemy in the show doesn't kill the adversary, just drains energy - Lyrics of Jpop music and their similarity to "pre-teen" music we have here (I did work for N*SYNC so I know more about this than just about anyone) - Overtones of peace, as opposed to realities of confilct and conflict resolution - Price point of toys and co-branded products, obviously looking for a child demographic - Lack of deaths in wartime - One main character rebels against parent-like authority and is glorified by it, this is an overtone used for many shows for 8-12 year olds - Other main character is a 15 year old girl who copes with growing up, as we all know the 8-12 demographic looks toward the next level of development in their stage of life for role models which would make Mylene make sense from a 'marketing to children' standpoint - Product oriented show, showcasing Jpop and other colorfull toys targeted at kids - Lack of models in comparison to comparable shows, which are marketed to older demographics I'm sure I could add some more if I gave it some thought.

So you are making marketing assumptions without any real knowledge of time slot of the television show, the market or even the intentions of the creator. How do I know these things? Because I was in Japan during the summer of 1995 watching the show. So I guess just by being in Japan in 1995 you are an expert... You don't have any data, and neither do I... The difference is, I am a marketing professional (I get paid $$$$$ to make assessments like this), and you are just crying about some show that you emotionally feel compelled to defend. I can imagine how you must feel, probably a sense of rejection, combined with the feeling of being alone, not knowing where to turn... Perhaps you should emerse your self in entertainment and extracaricular activities that don't promote sissiness like M7 does. You can probably handle day to day human relationship issues better if you follow my advice.
