Well, it's not as if the Zentradi were that unique in terms of conception as they're pretty much the same kind of oddly colored people like the Gamilas from Yamato. Likewise Southern Cross did the same thing while Mospeada took a healthy dose of the Starship Troopers bug plot. Robotech biggest obstacle to coming back is their stupid adherence to the old formula of 1980's Japanese space opera. As shitty as it was, Shadow Chronicles was basically a generic 80's space opera and let's face it, not even Japan makes those anymore. Maybe they should have tried ripping off something popular in America like Cowboy Bebop.

Podcast: Highlander: The Search for Vengeance

That's a filthy dirty lie. -
Even so, the directing in Macross Zero is still far better than RSC. You can certainly tell that one was made by industry veterans and the other was from a bunch of guys who didn't know what they were doing. Between Shin dicking around the island and Ichiro Itano making sweet love to your eyes, Zero is at least more engaging than RSC which seems to consists almost entirely of upper body shots of badly drawn people talking to each other. With regards to RSC's success, much of it can be attributed to the fact that it was the only game in town. If Zero had been allowed to come to America, it would have probably done better that RSC.

This is probably one of the funnier things the fans attempt argue about Robotech. Granted, they're probably the ones who genuinely like all that generic sci-fi crap added in the expanded universe.

Dragon Ball movie rescued from dev hell?
VF5SS replied to bsu legato's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
The movie's been out in Asia for a month. You can find screeners all over the net. It really is as bad as they say. It makes no sense without prior knowledge and is inept enough to make Wing Commander the movie look well executed. -
has anyone ever made a REAL transformers skyfire toy?
VF5SS replied to pondo's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
One thing that bugs me about all the classics Jetfire is that it was trying to be both Skyfire and Jetfire. Just being one or the other would've probably made for a better figure. I also don't get why customizers keep using VF-1 toys to make a Skyfire when their transformations are fairly different. Skyfire was one of the few Marvel created designs that looked like it could be an actual toy. The only thing that was kind of vague was where his arms go in jet mode. I think they intended for them to go between the legs like a VF-1. -
OH SNAP!

That's a CAD design from 1984. It gives you an idea of what a CAD designed VF-1 would have looked like back then.

Lot of good points being made. Personally, I think once Macross II and Plus made their way to our shores, the game was over for Robotech. It's like at that point Macross no longer just the obscure Japanese version of Robotech. but a demonstratively active franchise. Not to belittle the people involved with Robotech at the time, but novels and comic books aren't really the mainstay of the franchise. Look at Star Wars, they pump out hundreds of novels and comics precisely because they're cheap to make and they sell regardless of their quality (even Darksaber was a best seller for Star Wars). And with the advent of the original shows on DVD, people are starting to recommend the originals to newcomers and the things that make Robotech unique are becoming less apparent as time goes on.

You'd hate being big into Gundam, Gubaba. Sunrise and Bandai have filled the One Year War so full of mobile suits that even the combined might of Zeta and Advance of Zeta can't keep up. The problem with Robotech is that its "this is really the same world" schtick didn't even work that well at the time. Even all the various Gundam sidestories fit together better than that. And twenty-something years after the fact, Robotech looks really out of place.

So they wanted to add to a stupid, convoluted mess of 80's mecha show by making another stupid, convoluted mess of 80's mecha shows? Why not add some of Dorvack and Galvion while you're at it?
-
No I'm pretty sure it has no story outside of just being edited version of the original stories. People liked it at the time for the same reason people like Voltron, most of the world just didn't have Japanese space opera shows on TV. All the stuff Robotech made up was pointless background filler and yet the fans make it seem like its the most central aspect of the show (probably because its the only thing that keeps someone from just watching the original material). It's like saying you like Gundam because of the ever guiding hand of the Zabi family or some poo.

Why do Robotech fans always refer to it as "THE ORIGINAL 85 EPISODES!" Most people don't refer to a show by its episode count. Interactive fandoms are generally the worst kind. Give a fan any kind of inch into the franchise and they'll wank all over it. I prefer to let the people in charge just tell their story. I guess part of the problem is that Robotech really doesn't have its own story.
-
Not to sound so presumptuous, but it seems like this whole "Roboculture" stems from the very nature of the product. When the product itself is comprised of pre-existing footage with a new story with no authority to it, doesn't that encourage a more fan zeal in terms of what the fans want for the franchise? Seems like they've had a long time to brew lots of fanfics and other such things. And given how Shadow Chronicles came out looking like a fan movie, it only adds more fuel to the fire that the current people in charge aren't much better than the fanbase itself.

We never made that claim. We only questioned if it was scheduled for six episodes because the last episode had really poor animation quality.

Why are you doing this?

I'm dead serious too. If you thought what Roger and I were doing in that thread was bad, just take a look at the countless non-sequiturs and "me too" spam in almost every toy thread. What are you as moderators doing to ensure that members post intelligently. Are you going to be well groomed like Stardestroyer.net or fartall stupid like the Allspark? The choice is yours.
