  1. Hey there Mods. I was wondering if it would be OK to start a non-Macross artwork thread and, if so, what would be the best place to put it. I spend a lot of time in the Fan works thread and I know that many of the contributors there do more than Macross-related stuff. So I thought it would be cool to have an o/t art thread where we can showcase our other works. I mean, if we can have threads on cars and, of all things, wrestling, and art-related thread is much less o/t than those (especially since a majority of the work that we do is still anime/manga/sci-fi related).

Anyhow, I was thinking it would go into the Fan Works section just because it seems like the closest fit, but I was hoping to get your approval and input before going ahead and doing it.

  2. Hey, STARSCREAM, nice tat. Reminds me of something I got...

The other one is literature-related, not anime or manga.

I would seriously get a Petite Cola machine tattoo somewhere. That would be awesome. In the meantime, I am wondering what I will get next. I am thinking of a cloud of soot sprites on one of my shoulders, but I'm not sure yet. I've got a lot of 'torso hair" that limits places for tattoos.

Anyway, DEADGHOST, don't listen to KNIGHT26 or PHYROX. If you've got the idea in your head and have worked it out, I say go for it!

  3. Nice site. I like what you have done.

However, I am nothing if not critical: I would definitely go back and edit your existing descriptions, both for spelling and grammar. Also, I like the color scheme, but the show titles are very hard to read.

Keep up the good work, and keep the obscure anime coming (I never thought I'd hear of Justy again)!

  4. Good point on his track record for sci-fi, although I'd still have to disagree with you on Kingdom of Heaven, even the Director's Cut. I am a medievalist who particularly studies the Crusades, and even then I went into it not expecting anything faithful to history (a la Gladiator) and, even then, I was disappointed.

We'll see how Prometheus pans out but, to be honest, It looks to be the same slow boiler as Alien, and I can't think of how he can improve on the formula. Alien is one of THE BEST horror films ever, even though it is a sci-fi.

  5. I'm going to hold onto my reservations about this. While Ridley Scott has made some of the best films ever (Alien, Blade Runner, Black Hawk Down), he has also been involved in a bunch of clunkers (1492: Conquest of Paradise, Kingdom of Heaven, A Good Year). Heck even Robin Hood was on track to being awesome until he came in and basically rewrote the story into a typical Robin Hood remake (with Higgins Boats, for some reason) and screwed it all up.

I think that this announcement coming on the heels of his re-visitation to the Alien franchise with Prometheus is a bad sign.

  6. So far, I've been aboard the New Jersey twice. From what I understand, it's still under restoration. The two times that I was there, the lower decks still weren't open to the public. I'd love to see the New Jersey's engine room one day.

Yeah, it's a great ship to visit. We went to the Garden State Craft Brewers Beer Festival three years in a row. The price of admission gets you the walking tour of the ship (saw something new every time) and at the end of the tour, a beer festival on the helipad. We "got lost" from the tour's path a couple of times. Once we got caught but I started talking with the guy and he realized I wasn't just screwing around and was truly interested in the ship, so he took us on an indirect route to get back to the tour path. Didn't see anything awe-inspiring except for a peek into the grandeur of the ship itself.

  7. Wow! You have a long, long, LONG way to go! Hehe :D

I just finished book 4. Not bad but definitely the weakest in the series, to me, thus far. These books are massive and after reading books 1-4 back to back to back to back, I a bit burnt out. I think I'll read the new Dresden book and possibly something else before I tackle book 5  Besides, it's not like book 6 will ready anytime soon

    Chris

Actually, I would recommend jumping into ADWD right away. ADWD and AFFC are concurrent for most of what happens, and then ADWD keeps going about 2/3 of the way through with the AFFC storyline joining in. It will probably be better with AFFC fresh in your mind.

Oh, believe me, I know I'm way behind...

At the same time, my usual rule is not to start any epic series before it's finished, so in way, I'm way ahead of where I ordinarily would be.

By the way, how much of the book does the series cover? When can I safely start watching it?

You can watch the whole first series when you are done with the first book.

  8. For those who didn't know, BlueBolt, the visual effects house for the first season of GoT, has posted a short video showcasing what their work. It is a neat little video, but can be kind of spoilerish...

Regretfully for BlueBolt (but maybe good for us) is that their services have not been retained for season 2, as it was determined that they were too small to handle the visual effects load needed. Let us hope this includes some large-scale army action (Massive can easily put together a nice aerial view), as a common complaint about season 1 was the description of large armies on the move or at battle, and yet all we see is a line of about 40 Dothraki horsemen...

Secondly, I just finished A Dance with Dragons last night (unrelenting spoilers below):

It was OK. There wasn't a lot that really stood out at me. I definitely do not for a second believe that Jon Snow is dead. My guess is that the Night Watch as we knew it is no more. I'm guessing the wildlings, who have a lot riding on Jon staying in charge, will come to his rescue along with the Black Brothers who are loyal to Jon. Looking at it all, GRRM seems to be setting up The Wall to shed it's dependence on financing and men from the Seven Kingdoms, and may become a kingdom in its own right.

Is Stannis dead? I'm not so sure. One thing we have learned is that the Boltons are a tricky lot, possibly even less trustworthy than the Freys (oohhh... I hate the Freys). The fact that Bolton still does not have "Arya" leads me to believe he is playing a ruse.

As for across the Narrow Sea? Nothing was so pointless and boring as all of those Dany chapters. They could easily have been whittled down by half and even then would've been too long, which is a shame because she used to be so much fun to read. The one take away I got at the end, and I think this is what GRRM was having her realize, is that staying still is worthless. She needs to be on the move towards Westeros and when she settles in, things get dull.

Overall, it was OK. After reading it, I am not more excited about it than AFFC, and it is looking that AFFC and ADWD will be at their best when the whole series is complete and read all in a row with the other books.
