  1. Have to admit that I have been curious about the newer series.

A few notes about BGC 2040:

    - While the animation is better, the violence level is severely watered-down. I forgot who broadcasted this series in Japan, but I bet it's TV Tokyo (the same people that didn't want blood on NOIR).

    - BGC's strongest point was its music. Apparently, 2040's weakest point is its music. (And don't get me started with Akira Sudo's remake of "Konya Wa Hurricane.")

    - 2040 changed the character traits to a point where many of them are hardly recognizable. Priss is a quiet schizoid unlike the original's spunky, hotheaded chick we've all grown to love. Sylia is a rampaging psychopath instead of the original's calm, intelligent character. Linna seems like a brat in the new version. Leon was a smart-ass with a keen sense of humor; the new Leon is just a dick (probably even gay, since he's not asking Priss for a date). We used to laugh at Daley pretending to be gay, but the new Daley is plain boring (maybe because he really has a thing for the new Leon).

Thanks for the info A7. I may have to check out an episode or two just to see.

  2. Soon to be 36 (approx a week and a half).

Who's the other MWer whose in that 36-45 category with me?

    That would be me, Cap.

There was a guy that used to post here, can't remember his handle but he used to post in pirate speak or some other strange vernacular. (Yar matey, etc) He was 45 or 46 at the time....

I think that I remember that guy...................

  3. I'm a huge Bubblegum Crisis fan. It was the first real anime I ever saw, and still one of my most favorite to this day. A few years ago I managed to pick up the BGC B-Club special for the low-low price of $50. I've never seen the newer series, and nor do I want to.

Wow. You got lucky, I paid $100 for mine.

I remember when I first stumbled across BGC in a video store. I was just beginning to discover anime, which was not an easy thing to do in Portland, Maine. I was blown away by the first episode. I rented the entire series as I was able to find them in the store.

My fav episode is still #6 - Red Eyes. I love it when it seems that Priss is about to be squashed, and the Typhoon 2 motoslave containing her back up suit arrives. It was just very cool to me to think that mecha like that would be so autonomous to be able to operate the way it did. The other thing is that it looks cool........

    :D

BGC will always be high on my list of most favorite anime. I still have all the episodes on VHS in the nice plastic clamshell covers. Have to admit that I have been curious about the newer series.

  4. you guys with the peer pressure... I just have to wonder if I have any non-incriminating pics of myself

found one... though I still need to take pics of the kevlar for my trade post so expect a better one from me. FYI ... no incriminating evidence around because this was taken by my wife on our wedding night. I took pics of her as well but lord knows I would get yelled at for posting those

feel free to make whatever derogatory comments you can think of LOL.

    You're a TV?

    No, wait!

    YOU'RE INVISIBLE!!!

  5. It is the end of an era.

I was living on Long Island in NY when the Concorde was first scheduled to land at Kennedy. I remember, somewhat the furor over the amount of noise that it was expected to create. I thought it was pretty cool that such a sleek looking airliner was flying.

I'll be able to see one up close and personal at the new Smithsonian museum when it opens. Very much looking forward to that.

  6. I listen to Bob Mould in his various incarnations (solo, Sugar, Husker Du) mostly. But I have an affinity for ska, ranging from the early days to the third wave bands. Always been a bit of a closet punker. It's nice to see that there is one other person who still digs the Dead Kennedys.

    ;)

Surf music has been growing on me lately though. Ever since I picked up Dick Dale's Unknown Territory, I have discovered another favorite music genre. There are some bands and tunes from the 70's that I still dig.

I've seen both Bob Mould and Dick Dale live. I actually got to meet and talk to Bob after one of his shows at the Palladium in Hollywood, and Dick's show, well, it was pretty wild (saw him at the Huntington Pier back in '84). My dad's an old longboarder, so I've been listening to Surf my whole life. The Ventures are pretty decent for old school surf too.

That's cool. I have not had the pleasure of talking to Bob yet, and he lives here in DC. I've seen him 7 or 8 times now and he DJs at a local club every Saturday night. Dick Dale still rocks! His show was amazing and it was a riot to see these grey haired old ladies at the show. Turned out they are family members of his. The show I saw was in Cambridge Mass, and I was surprised to find out that Dick is from Quincy, Mass.

Explained why the old ladies were there!

  7. Oh and regarding ska, I never got into 3rd wave...unless you consider The Pietasters 3rd wave ska. I still listen to Desmond Dekker, Laurel Aitken, Prince Buster, Derrick Morgan(my fave!)...and 2-Tone stuff like English Beat, Body Snatchers (mmmm...alll female ska band!), The Specials, (old) Madness, The Selector, etc...

Unfortunately, I don't own any of the older stuff.................yet, but I used to listen to Jamaica 60's Stylee on MSN radio. Nice mix of old ska. The Brit ska bands from the 80's are still excellent. I think the Pietasters would be considered 3rd wave. I have a tape called Ska - The Third Wave and it's got the Pietasters, Dancehall Crashers, and Mustard Plug, just to name a couple.
