Super Macross Mecha Fun Time Discussion Thread!

When they say “marines” in Macross, are they meaning strictly seaborne troops, delivered by the UN Navy? Or are they including spaceborne forces? If meaning the former, why would they even still exist? -

YF-21 notwithstanding. That one’s pretty blatant for the legs obviously not fitting in the fuselage in his sketches, but for some reason he wasn’t too concerned about it. I guess we could chalk it up to squishy skin. -

Hah, you're not alone on this one. I've felt like this on multiple occasions. I suspect there's a certain bias due to the amount of (not un-respectable, mind you) work they've put into the publications. I *could* say something, but it'll go round and round until we agree to disagree, or I just lose interest in continuing to argue a super niche topic. However, in this case I would say it's an animation error - for personal edification either imagine some sort of attachment/hangar that does fit the size, or pretend it's some other class that's similar. If I were an animator I'm not sure I'd go back and "correct" such things. It's just not that important, except to a very small subset of people. The "same size" argument counting only the length is a little disingenuous though, I agree. -

Whatever size looks coolest is pretty much par for most sci-fi, and it’s kinda been the tradition in Macross since the SDF-1 city. Just feels a bit jarring due to meticulous attention to detail in other areas of the franchise. -
I actually didn’t even notice the cartoon model fighter doesn’t have the turret sticking out. I guess that’s how much I kinda zoned out through 7. 😆

The VF-11 rear-facing cannon is at such specific fixed angle, that the coverage for this thing seems dubious. -

The -31’s gun pod is a beam weapon. Its two secondary weapons (on the arms) are rail guns. Also, rail guns do use physical ammunition, just not physical propellant. -

So, in VF-X2 we have the VF-11's doing missile spam without missile packs. I know some liberties are taken with game graphics as far as technical details go. In a perfect world would these VF-11's have been animated with super packs? Or do they have some sort of internal missile pallet that the stock -11's don't? -
You and me both. I detest this thing and feel very disappointed. Reasons? All in the thread already, which have been pretty consistent. It’s not some great mystery.

I don't disagree, but what you're saying is also an oversimplification from a narrative point of view. It's a spectrum that we, as the consuming audience, come to some some sort of rough consensus about.

I’m with Screaming Man on this. The “I thought it was for the best” justification doesn’t exactly rule out a lot evil, except perhaps cartoonish supervillainy. It’s a bit of pedantry.

Nice, that’s a lot more detail on this topic than I was aware of. Thanks. -

So - valkyries have a lot of very thin and pointy bits, e.g. things that are probably control surfaces in flight mode. When they're in battroid mode, assuming they get into some sort of hand to hand combat, wouldn't those surfaces get subjected to tremendous torsion or other stresses if, say, a battroid falls down? Are those surfaces designed to bend to absorb stress (other than the weird wing material we see with YF-21)? Do they just snap?
