Macross DYRL: Proper English Fandub

Hikuro

Recommended Posts

I got a new claudia, she'll have a better turn around time as I've worked with her in other movies before.

I also gone and corrected all the audio mistakes, even improved some of the sfxs....so, yeah, all I can do is just wait on the voice overs of the last 2 actresses and the movies done.

no prob lol yeah lots of experince.

Anyways some good news, I got lines in from my new claudia, fast huh? She's going to try and turn in one more set and I'm gonna email her for a few redoes from the second act cause they just don't feel quiet right.

Aaaaaaaannnnnnnnnnnnnddddddddddddddddd then I just wait on Cristina.

The girl playing the new Claudia is Cypher (Kakizaki and Badolza)'s wife, so they produce results, she gets the job done fast and friendly without waste.

You're probably right about Alto which is why I haven't done any other MF clips for the last several months, littl eof no interest since the show is over.

Just a heads up, Act I could be out tonight COULD BE. I'm waiting on redoes which I was told would come today. Then a final audio adjustment and I'll put the first........I dunno six pieces up on youtube for viewing. Which reminds me, I'm taking down the samples today since the film is very near completion. Even Cristina turned in some stuff for the film and a tv episode.

Right now the first act of the movie is being uploaded through megaupload. Probably wasn't the best of choices as it says it'll take 6 hours to upload, I hate that to no end.

As for samples, well, there's been samples of the film for months now :p but since the first act is "Complete" I deleted all the first act samples that were on youtube leaving only the 2 from Act II.

I would of had this up a long time ago cept I had some issues where I couldn't edit the video the way I wanted it to keep the kick ass sub work I did so I had to use Windows Movie Maker and that took almost 2 hours.

Video quality is fine, along with the audio.

Sorry guys, just gonna have to wait a little longer, but I'll put it up before I go to bed tonight.

Cool. :p I came in late, so i missed the links on youtube, can't wait to check it all out!

As embarrising as it is to mention, my first experience to DYRL? was the bionoids uncut (but with no flashback concert at end)

english dub and still to this day I enjoy it (nostalgic). I really liked the english song the voice actress sung while minmay was captured

and Hikaru and Misa were down on earth tasting muto fish.

So a high quality dub will be brilliant!

While it took me a few hours to upload it, everyone in the meantime has told me how incredibly fast the download is which urks me a bit lol.

I've already recieved one complaint about Lionel's audio and the helmet effect. No need to beat a dead horse on that one, I don't really plan on changing the helmet effects unless someone can provide me something better and can hold off on another MONTH work of audio redoes.

That's why I didn't say anything about the helmet effect. Plus, I've no clue what it's supposed to sound like. If I did, I could probably help, but like you said, I wouldn't be able to wait that long :)

Then again, if it takes that long for the rest of the lines to come in, next time you see me online, I've spotted a few tweaks you might have missed. Nothing major, just stuff that can get fixed while you're in a waiting zone. And a run through a volume leveler of your voice track wouldn't hurt either, especially for a DVD release.

You pointed out on TFCog that you were worried about eBay Sellers stealing your audio as a "Rare English Version". Report them on eBay, if you ever see one, or let the buyer know what they're actually paying for. Or simply report to eBay that this is a non-profit project being stolen. That's what the guys at Star Trek: Phase 2 did, and they got their point across.

Personally I'm happy with all the voice actors on this. I haven't seen anything of the originals, and have only Robotech as reference (and I never liked their voices anyway).

BTW, you've got some spellings wrong in the terms of your 2008 credits :) Nothing major, and it's not meant as a public humiliation or anything, so that's why I'm letting you know here instead of in private. I'm not enough of a jerk to actually mean it in a bad way, and I'll relay your compliments to Cassa about her Claudia. She wants to wait for the final version in order to watch it, me I'm happy with Low Quality :)

2008 - Eyesore Productions - Prime Time 3 (Stop motion toy animation)

(that should be EYESON, not Eyesore. Don't let Steeljaw see this *LOL*)

2008 - Fyrespawn Production - Transformers Headmasters

Autobot Leader - Rodimus Prime (Episodes 4-10 with possible ep 1-3 remixed)

(Technically, that's "2008 - AdaptationsGJ / Fyerspawn Productions - Transformers Headmasters UFP" UFP is important, we don't want Hasbro to shut is down :) And they KNOW we're doing this stuff. They know. And what's that about a remix? I've never heard of that, though I think episode 3 could at least use a SFX track swap with the french version :) )

2008 - Scramble City 2.0 - TFCog and DFA

(That's Scramble City FVR - TFCog / AdaptationsGJ)

There, bet you didn't think I'd come and nitpick on this forum as well, huh?? *grins*

I assume this is one of your VAs, Hikuro?

Either way, welcome to Macross World Forums, Cypher!

Hi, I'm another one of the VA's. My user name is Time Lord and I play Exadore in this fine production. Just registered to say well done to Hikuro and to everyone who supported him as well as my fellow VA's who did a fantastic job (Special props must go to Mrs. Cypher for submitting her lines in incredibally short notice). Doing the Zentreadi lines were an absolute bugger to get through but thankfully it all came good in the dub (Good job!).

I'll be popping up every now and again since I'm something of a Macross newbie who only just finished watching Frontier and Zero, so I can do with an education in all things Deculture!

Looking forward to Part Two, Hik!

Yep these two are some of the VA's, with Cypher I also work with him on Transformers Headmasters as his Rodimus Prime and was his Deadend and Cliffjumper for Scramble City which I keep saying kicked ass.

See here's what happened. Back in........2005 yeah, this girl was mad crazy about Casshern the live action movie, so she decided to dub it. Then in 07 close to christmas time she finishes the movie and sold DVD's to the cast members and to a few other people like some here who would want a DVD of something so freakin sweet.

This girl pretty much spent over 2 years redoing EVERYTHING from scratch and nailed her VA's until all t heir lines were freaking PERFECT.

She also had it up on megaupload in sections for those who didn't wanna buy a DVD or anything.

So, a year rolls along since it's release, and I'm cruising around looking up stuff fro the new cartoon show Casshern Sins, and it says on ebay on google "CASSHERN DVD ENGLISH AUDIO" and I'm like, so I click on it.

Pretty much says "Get a copy of the live action Casshern movie with japanese and english subtitles and RARE English audio!".

I know she was the only one who did the movie in English, she even got a C&D order at one point I think but she kept going under the radar. So I contacted ebay, told 'em, they said they'd investigate, and I also contacted the seller and told them the story.

The guy quickly brought it down as I was explaining the story to the girl, Aleema who did the movie and was she PISSED. I think still after 3 weeks she's trying to find out who was distributing this to get them to stop cause it was a fan project, she made no money, infact lost money to get this out.

That's why I'm kind of iffy on a big scale release with a super quality film at times....cause it just takes someone to rip the audio and stick it into something and sell it on ebay to make 5 bucks.

I must say,,, I'm thoroughly impressed with the quality of the work. Personally, I find nothing wrong with the helmet effect. It does make it more of a personal touch. I believe in a work like this, you want to find a good balance between keeping the feel of the original film, yet add your own touch to put your own signature on.

Speaking of work, Hikuro, I've got more stuff to send you, and will have it to you monday. I just got another VA job as well (thankfully won't start till early next year), and I'm working on music for that same fan work. It's definitely a ride doing this stuff again. I haven't done any work in what seems like ages. Again, very impressed with the work so far...save a copy of this for me.

My problems:

The audio's not sync'd well and it looks like a bad Chinese movie

Roy's voice is too rough. Did that VA ever have to undergo tracheal surgery?

Some of the lines (namely the Hikaru ones -_-) are a bit stuttered. For example, "The-the artificial gravity's *Indiscernable* s-screwed up!"

Hikaru needs a noise-cancelling microphone

The helmet effect is exaggerated. Ask the Roosterteeth guys how they got theirs.

All of Roy's lines during the fight before their capture are indiscernable, even past the point of intoxication

Max is too off-hand when he speaks

Hayao is too... Um... Take Max, Roy, Hikaru, and a moron and put them together and that's his voice

I mean, no offense to any of the VAs, but DAMN. I guess Misa, Claudia, and Minmay's VAs did good.

On that note, Sammie's (I refuse to say Shammie) VA needs to speak up.

Again, no offense, there's just a bunch of things wrong with it. From editing to recording to casting. Sorry if I sound harsh, but it's what I see and hear.

Also, the Japanese subtitles for the Zentraedi make it hard to read the English ones.

All in all, I give the LQ Sample a 5.231/10. Maybe the full version will be better. Some of the audio syncing can be traced to overcompression, so if it seems right in HQ, I guess that's ok.

Out of sync? Last I checked there was nothing out of sync on it. And stuttering? The only stuttering i did was when he got nervous introducing himself.

The HQ subtitles will cover up the japanese ones, but there's no way I can actually get rid of those, I've stated that about a dozen times. I could use COB but the screen quality would be crap, like you would be mixing SC and Megazone again.

And stated the mic noise, can't be helped, but I've heard more people say that this is so far much better than COB by a long shot and if that's the worst I've heard right there, than I know I did a good job on it.

Well, I'd say he was waiting for the HQ version so obviously he was expecting something professional. Hik, for a bunch of amateurs, this is definitely one of the higher quality dubs I've heard. It's on par with TFCog's Beast Wars II stuff, which is quite possibly their best material.

*shrugs* I delivered what I was asked for Hayao. He does seem like he's more of a hyper-type persona than what I saw of Robotech, so I think the younger brash voice works well. At the end of the day, though, it's what Hikuro wanted, and he's the boss.

Like I tell the people in France when they complain about the French Canadian Transformer names in my dubs: Outdo us :) Best way to get it the way you want :)

I wasn't expecting much. I've seen some HORRIBLE fandubs before. This is a million times better than some of the ones I've seen.

I didn't mean to offend, it's just that some voices don't quite capture the character's spirit properly. Same goes for Roy. He sounds like some 13 year old got sick and tried to speak with a scratchy voice. Roy's not scratchy! He's a half-witted, stuck-up nerf herder, but he's not scruffy-looking. He's supposed to be the cool guy everyone likes, not the gruff war veteran that lives down the street.

And watch it yourself, Hik. The audio often finds itself running faster than the character's mouth. The Zentraedi lines seem to fit, but watching some of the human lines...

His intro wasn't the only time you stuttered. "The-the artificial gravity's *indiscernable* s-screwed up!" I mean, I guess the lines could be construed as anxiety or something, but... Maybe they meant to sound that way, but sounded erroneous. I dunno.

As for the static mic, you could put it in audacity and remove the recording's background noise.

no offense taken at all, but I have watched the movie about a few dozen times, haven't come across any real issues that I wasn't already aware of. Can't make things absolutely perfect in something that's fan made, you can only do your personal best and go with that. I know sometimes the movie will jump or freeze if my computer is doing a dozen things at once that could cause a stutter or whatnot, but listening over my lines free and clear with nothing surrounding it, no stutter.

Never even once had a director say "You stuttered, try it again"....the only complaint I ever had about my voice was slurring some words Waddya instead of What do you for example.

As for Lionel, yes, his audio is VERY loud. He's around my age too, his normal voice is slightly different. The best example I can give is this http://www.veoh.com/videos/v1086856PqxxHKDn flick right here as him and I did pretty much all the male voices cept for Allen.
