  1. Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV is the latest CG animated film in the Final Fantasy franchise. It is directed by Takeshi Nozue, co-director of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children and features the voices of Aaron Paul (Jesse in Breaking Bad), Lena Headey (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Ma-Ma in Dredd), and Sean Bean (the guy that dies in every other film, meaning he'll probably die here as well). The film opens in Japanese theaters on July 9 and will have a limited U.S. release on August 19. Official Site
  2. Coming to theaters this Thanksgiving is Disney's Moana, directed by Ron Clements and John Musker (Aladdin, Hercules) and featuring the following voices: Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson (The Scorpion King, Hobbs in The Fast and the Furious series) as Maui Auli'i Cravalho as Moana Waialiki Rachel House as Gramma Tala Temuera Morrison (Jango Fett in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, Commander Cody in Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith) as Chief Tui Waialiki Nicole Scherzinger (the talented one in The Pussycat Dolls) as Sina Waialiki Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords) as Tamatoa Alan Tudyk (Duke of Weselton in Frozen, Duke Weaselton in Zootopia) as Heihei Music is by Mark Mancina (Speed, Blood+) with songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton, In the Heights) and Opetaia Foa'i (of the New Zealand band Te Vaka). The film will be released in most of Europe as Vaiana (supposedly due to copyright issues) and in Italy as Oceania (because they have a porn star named Moana). Official Site
  3. Certain as the sun Rising in the east Tale as old as time Song as old as rhyme Beauty and the Beast Following the success of Cinderella and The Jungle Book, Disney will give their 1991 animated classic Beauty and the Beast the live-action treatment in 2017. The film is directed by Bill Condon (The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Parts 1-2, Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh) and features the following cast: Emma Watson (Hermione in Harry Potter) as Belle Dan Stevens (Ian Katz in The Fifth Estate, Lancelot in Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb) as the Beast Luke Evans (Dracula Untold, Bard in The Hobbit) as Gaston Kevin Kline (still banging Phoebe Cates after three decades) as Maurice Josh Gad (Olaf in Frozen, Chuck in The Angry Birds Movie) as LeFou Ewan McGregor (Mark Renton in Trainspotting 1-2, Lincoln Six Echo in The Island) as Lumiere Emma Thompson (Professor Sybil in Harry Potter, Agent O in Men in Black III) as Mrs. Potts Ian McKellen (Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings, Erik/Magneto in X-Men) as Cogsworth Stanley Tucci (Joshua Joyce in Transformers: Age of Extinction, Caesar in The Hunger Games) as Cadenza Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Famulus in Jupiter Ascending) as Babette Audra McDonald (Dr. Bennett in Private Practice and Grey's Anatomy) as the Wardrobe The film is set for release on May 17, 2017. 4. From Shane Black (Hawkins in Predator) comes The Nice Guys, a love letter to '70s buddy action-comedy films starring Russell Crowe (Hando in Romper Stomper, SID 6.7 in Virtuosity) and Ryan Gosling (The Driver in Drive, Julian in Only God Forgives). The film opened this weekend in the U.S. and has garnered a lot of praise from critics, quickly rivaling Black's 2005 cult film Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Official Site Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 90% - "The Nice Guys hearkens back to the buddy comedies of a bygone era while adding something extra courtesy of a knowing script and the irresistible chemistry of its leads." Metacritic Score: 70 out of 100
  5. Coming to theaters on June 3 is Approaching the Unknown, directed by Mark Elijah Rosenberg and starring Mark Strong (Merlin in Kingsman: The Secret Service, Sinestro in Green Lantern) as an astronaut on a lone mission to Mars that goes wrong halfway, pushing his mission and sanity on the edge.
  6. Turbo Kid EMA Films/Timpson Films/Epic Pictures Group, 2015 Written and Directed by François Simard, Anouk Whissell and Yoann-Karl Whissell Running Time: 95 minutes Rated R for extreme violence and profanity. Cast Munro Chambers as The Kid Laurence Leboeuf as Apple Michael Ironside (Richter in Total Recall, Katana in Highlander II) as Zeus Edwin Wright as Skeletron Aaron Jeffery (Thomas Logan in X-Men Origins: Wolverine) as Frederick Romano Orzari as Bagu Synopsis It is the year 1997. Wars and nuclear fallout have created a post-apocalyptic society called "The Wasteland", ruled by the tyrannical Zeus. A lone teenage scavenger known only as The Kid spends his days riding his BMX bike and trading junk for supplies and issues of Turbo Rider, a comic book from the old civilization. One day, he meets a girl named Apple and reluctantly brings her to scavenging trips after she entraps him with a tracking device. But after Apple is kidnapped by a bandit, The Kid stumbles upon a crashed ship, where he discovers and puts on the suit of his childhood hero. Using his new abilities, Turbo Kid races to save his girl from execution at the hands of Zeus. Lowdown Much like Kung Fury, Turbo Kid is a love letter to the '80s - particularly the action and sci-fi B-movies of that decade. The sets look simple, the cinematography feels like a Cannon film, the costumes are loud in color, and the acting is over the top. Being also a tribute to Peter Jackson's earlier works, this film is an extreme splatter fest that rivals Bad Taste and perhaps even Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky. The CG effects add to the overall cheesiness. Of all the cast members, Laurence Labeouf steals the show as Apple, a rather schizophrenic girl with Jem hair and makeup. Michael Ironside really hams it up as the main antagonist Zeus. But if there's one thing that seals the deal, it's the music. The synthpop score by Le Matos is simply mesmerizing, with shades of John Carpenter and Jan Hammer. It easily rivals Mitch Murder and Lost Years' works for Kung Fury. The cast of Turbo Kid know it's silly, but they just roll with it. And in the end, it comes off as one of the most rad movies to come from the independent scene. Rating: A- Links Official Turbo Kid Website Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 88% - "A nostalgic ode to kids' movies of yesteryear, Turbo Kid eyes the past through an entertaining -- albeit surprisingly gory -- postmodern lens." 7. One of the most controversial graphic novels of all time finally gets animated. Alan Moore and Brian Bolland's Batman: The Killing Joke is produced by Bruce Timm (Batman: The Animated Series) and directed by Sam Liu (Superman/Batman: Public Enemies, Batman: Year One), and will feature the following voices: Kevin Conroy as Bruce Wayne/Batman (since 1992) Mark Hamill as The Joker (who else?) Tara Strong as Barbara Gordon (reprising role from Beware the Batman and Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman) Ray Wise (Nash in RoboCop, Perry White in Superman: Doomsday) as Commissioner Gordon As with other adapted works, Alan Moore refuses to be credited in this film. The film will be rated R and is slated for a July release. A Sneak Peek at Batman: The Killing Joke
  8. Long before The Asylum existed, there was Cannon Films. After being sold to Israeli cousins Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus, Cannon Films churned out some of the shittiest movies ever produced on a monthly (sometimes even weekly) basis in the 1980s. They were the kings of the B-movie genre, releasing guilty pleasures such as Sho Kosugi's Ninja Trilogy, Chuck Norris' Missing in Action trilogy, Charles Bronson's Death Wish saga, Sylvester Stallone's Cobra and Over the Top, and the American Ninja pentalogy. But that's not all - Cannon was responsible for Masters of the Universe and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, as well as Robotech: The Untold Story. And who could ever forget their dance classics Breakin' and Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo? To celebrate this fabled production studio, a documentary was released in 2014. Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films features interviews with stars who either made their big break or went broke with Cannon such as Michael "American Ninja" Dudikoff, Dolph "He-Man" Lundgren, Bo Derek (still a "10" for her age), Cassandra "Elvira" Peterson, Marina "Counselor Troi" Sirtis, Alex "Bill S. Preston, ESQ" Winter, and more. Much like Tim Burton's biopic on Ed Wood, this documentary has received critical acclaim worldwide. So what were your favorite Cannon films? Official Facebook Page Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 93% - "Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films pays tribute to the titular studio with an affectionate look back that's arguably more entertaining than much of Cannon's own B-movie product."

  10. From the studio that gave us This Is the End and The Interview comes an animated film on crack. 12. Zootopia has been under our radar for months, mostly because the trailers weren't that impressive. However, even before its official U.S. release on March 4, the film is already receiving rave reviews. "A" "Definitely Worth Buying on Blu-ray" Official Site Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 100% - "The brilliantly well-rounded Zootopia offers a thoughtful, inclusive message that's as rich and timely as its sumptuously state-of-the-art animation -- all while remaining fast and funny enough to keep younger viewers entertained." Metacritic Score: 80 out of 100
  13. Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass are back for another chapter of the Bourne saga (and to tell you that The Bourne Legacy didn't happen). Jason Bourne hits theaters on July 29. Jason Bourne @ IMDb
  14. Lazer Team is a sci-fi comedy film produced by Rooster Teeth (RWBY, Red vs. Blue) and is a result of a successful Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign (collecting pledges of US$2.4 million against a campaign target of US$650,000). In the film, four friends stumble upon an alien battle suit and find themselves in a dilemma when they split the suit among themselves. Reviews for the film have been surprisingly positive: "If you want to see the greatest cinematic usage of the jerk-off hand motion (to date), watch Lazer Team. It’s a bit of satirical sci-fi comedy that only the guys at Rooster Teeth can dream up, given a strong love for egregious dick jokes and non-stop references to Independence Day." - Matt Donato, We Got This Covered "3 super-robotic burritos out of 5. Lazer Team might not be a non-stop laugh-a-minute type of movie, but taken as a low-budget, high-energy, quick-witted homage to the best in 1980s matinee movies, it manages to be a pretty good time." - Scott Weinberg, Nerdist "3 1/2 out of 5 skulls. Comical, surprisingly intelligent, and entertaining, Lazer Team is a movie that’s worth watching, and stands a step above other popcorn flicks of its nature. Although the formula is somewhat predictable, and the plot admittedly pretty silly, the film still manages to be a success, based partially on a script that provides some interesting notes on today’s individualistic-driven generation, and the raw power that comes from good old teamwork." - Kalyn Corrigan, Bloody Disgusting Lazer Team premieres in select U.S. theaters on January 27. 17. The Death of "Superman Lives": What Happened? is a documentary written and directed by Jon Schnepp (Metalocalypse). It gives an in-depth look at Superman Lives, an aborted attempt at bringing Superman back to the big screen in the mid-1990s by producer Jon Peters (Batman, Superman Returns) and director Tim Burton (Pee-wee's Big Adventure, Beetlejuice), with Nicolas Cage (Ghost Rider, Castor Troy in Face/Off) in the title role. Right from the get-go, the project was rife with problems - majority of which were caused by Peters' outlandish depictions of Superman and Brainiac. And right when Nicolas Cage had just finished a few costume tests, Warner Bros. pulled the plug on the film. While Peters' idea of having Brainiac as a robotic spider never materialized, it was recycled in the 1999 bomb Wild Wild West. People involved in Superman Lives such as Kevin Smith (Clerks, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back) and Lorenzo di Bonaventura (Transformers) have moved on to more successful projects. So for those who were utterly disappointed by Superman Returns and Man of Steel, it could've been worse. Here's Chris Stuckmann's review of the documentary: And here are pics of the costumes that Cage tested: Official Site EDIT: Schnepp, the goddamn troll...
  18. Coming to theaters on June 17, 2016 is Finding Dory, the sequel to Disney/Pixar's critically acclaimed 2003 film Finding Nemo. Andrew Stanton (A Bug's Life, WALL-E) returns to direct this film after learning his mistake of doing John Carter. Ellen DeGeneres (The Ellen DeGeneres Show, sometimes host of the Academy Awards) and Albert Brooks (Bernie Rose in Drive, various voices in The Simpsons) reprise their roles as Dory and Marlin, respectively. Also returning are Willem Dafoe (The Last Temptation of Christ, John Geiger in Speed 2: Cruise Control) as Gill and Vicki Lewis as Deb. New cast members include: Hayden Rolence as Nemo (replacing Alexander Gould) Diane Keaton (Annie Hall, Kay Adams in The Godfather Parts II-III) as Jenny Eugene Levy (Noah Levenstein in the American Pie series) as Charlie Ty Burrell (Doc Samson in The Incredible Hulk) as Bailey Kaitlin Olson (Deandra in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia) as Destiny Ed O'Neill (Glen in Wayne's World 1-2, Jay in Modern Family) as Hank Idris Elba (Tango in American Gangster, Moreau in Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance) as Fluke Dominic West (Palace Guard in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, Sab Than in John Carter) as Rudder Official Site
  19. (I feel like I was hijacking the other guy's thread, so...) Some of you might be familiar with the Gundam Mega Marathon I've been on for the past couple of years and I'm not abandoning it, but with the announcement of the new Macross Delta tv series, I realized it had been quite a while since I had watched Macross. Therefore, I'll be going on a Macross Mega Marathon, which should be a little less consuming than the Gundam Marathon. Don't worry, I'm not giving up on Gundam; I'll of course be watching G-Tekketsu as it airs. Anyway, I'll be posting my impressions here, just like with my Gundam thread. My thoughts on the episodes can be mainly located here: https://www.facebook.com/robert.hayes.5249/media_set?set=a.1060615947317072.1073741839.100001060297207&type=1&l=b7090795f7 It's current to episode 5.
