bsu legato Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 Maybe the SV-51 has no "name" attached to it. It seems to be a mainly western practice, since all the codenames we associate with eastern aircraft are all, in fact, NATO reporting names. Alternatively, a lot of hits on a net search for the '51 turn up "Gamma," deriving from the full designation for the bird as shown on the Hasegawa packaging, SV-51É£ .
ruskiiVFaussie Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 (edited) Uhh, I thought V in VF means Variable... right? It doesn't make sense that the letters have to follow after another what someone mentioned here, like, whats W mean? lol I always thought Variable Fighter... and the Y just for pre-production VF's. X is for un-manned drones correct? In Macross Universe i mean. Gah, just checked... like what the hell is Q for in QF-2200D-A Ghost. Now, whats SV stand for? S? Variable? Vic Mancini Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 I've always wondered this.... If real world test aircraft like the Raptor and Black Widow were called the YF-22 and YF-23, shouldn't the Macross Plus Variable Fighters be called YVF-19 and YVF-21?
Skull-1 Posted April 7, 2007 Posted April 7, 2007 X stands for experimental. After the experimental stage comes the prototype stage right? Well, Y comes after X so maybe that's it. That can't be right, the Phantom name is already taken by the F-4. Yes it can. Names are recycled. The F-22 is not the first "Lightning" for example (see P-38, English Electric, etc.). The F-4 is not the first Phantom either. (See FH-1.)
Skull-1 Posted April 7, 2007 Posted April 7, 2007 *Points at Dave, JBO, Azrael* The rationale escapes me, ask those Macrossfreaks. The YF-17 never went into production as the F-17. It became the F/A-18... It happens.
IAD Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 To answer ruskiiVFaussie, it's been speculated the S in SV stands for Sukhoi... Thus, SV = Sukhoi Variable. ~Luke
Fly4victory Posted April 14, 2007 Posted April 14, 2007 Concur, It makes sense as a link with current soviet aircraft design. To answer ruskiiVFaussie, it's been speculated the S in SV stands for Sukhoi... Thus, SV = Sukhoi Variable. ~Luke
