It seems to be a mainly western practice, since all the codenames we associate with eastern aircraft are all, in fact, NATO reporting names. Alternatively, a lot of hits on a net search for the '51 turn up "Gamma," deriving from the full designation for the bird as shown on the Hasegawa packaging, SV-51É£ . It doesn't make sense that the letters have to follow after another what someone mentioned here, like, whats W mean? lol I always thought Variable Fighter... and the Y just for pre-production VF's. X is for un-manned drones correct? In Macross Universe i mean. Gah, just checked... like what the hell is Q for in QF-2200D-A Ghost. Now, whats SV stand for? S? Variable? If real world test aircraft like the Raptor and Black Widow were called the YF-22 and YF-23, shouldn't the Macross Plus Variable Fighters be called YVF-19 and YVF-21? That can't be right, the Phantom name is already taken by the F-4. Yes it can. Names are recycled. The F-22 is not the first "Lightning" for example (see P-38, English Electric, etc.).
