Maybe the SV-51 has no "name" attached to it. It seems to be a mainly western practice, since all the codenames we associate with eastern aircraft are all, in fact, NATO reporting names. Alternatively, a lot of hits on a net search for the '51 turn up "Gamma," deriving from the full designation for the bird as shown on the Hasegawa packaging, SV-51É£ .

Uhh, I thought V in VF means Variable... right? It doesn't make sense that the letters have to follow after another what someone mentioned here, like, whats W mean? lol I always thought Variable Fighter... and the Y just for pre-production VF's.

X is for un-manned drones correct? In Macross Universe i mean.

Gah, just checked... like what the hell is Q for in QF-2200D-A Ghost.

Now, whats SV stand for? S? Variable?

X stands for experimental. After the experimental stage comes the prototype stage right? Well, Y comes after X so maybe that's it.

That can't be right, the Phantom name is already taken by the F-4.

Yes it can. Names are recycled.

The F-22 is not the first "Lightning" for example (see P-38, English Electric, etc.).

The F-4 is not the first Phantom either. (See FH-1.)

*Points at Dave, JBO, Azrael*

 The rationale escapes me, ask those Macrossfreaks. ^_^

The YF-17 never went into production as the F-17. It became the F/A-18... It happens.
