I thought Klan will be ubiquitous in this episode but I was wrong. For the end, Ao no Ether with the dramatic plot was well made!

But isn'it strange she keeps seeing or thinking of Brera when she recovers her memories but hasn't made the link yet ? We are in the 21 episode and since episode 7 they keep moping their relationship even though it was too obvious since the beginning. I already said it but VF Messiah, this is a long drag....

I think the second season was not planned from the start because this kind of things can mess up the story badly (ie: Taniguchi on Geass). Code Geass got a second season because that was a probability from the start, had the series got enough success (although it was not decided whether it would have been a second season, an OVA or a movie). Gundam 00 was two seasons from the start.

We don't even know how many episodes Macross Frontier we got, but the episodes seem to be planned too throughly to be extended on a whim, plus we've already got

the death of a major character and no replacement in sight for him

I don't know that much about Code Geass since I dropped after the eight first episode ... I heard about the second season too and.....

I said Ranka death might explain the absence of a second season but I even though like you: it wasn't planned since the beginning.

I'm not sure they will want her, thought She better stay away from them if she want to make it until the end, she may be the songstress but there is only one queen.

I highly doubt one of the two main girls will die, especially Ranka since she seems to have the protection of the Vajra (in ep. 20 Grace mentioned something like that)

I think Macross Frontier is 28 episodes, and is roughly divisible in 7 episode arcs. With episode 8 we got the subplot about Grace being a spy, while with episode 15 we got Ranka used as a weapon. The next big change will be introduced with episode 22, but we should already see something in episode 21. It seems likely Ranka will regain her memory, although what that would mean it is still to be known.

Anyway, Kawamori said he put special care in balancing Ranka and Sheryl, and he is directing both episode 20 and 21. If you think Ranka fell short in episode 20, the next episode should even things out

I believe we may see a Macross Zero type ending with Ranka becoming the new Vajra Queen to heal/save Sheryl and then dying inside the Vajra hive while saving Frontier from the final attack by Macross Galaxy/G.R.A.C.E.... Maybe Ranka will become fused with Ai-Kun or will get assimilated in a Birdman style cockpit... or something...

on the otherhand, a ranka sacrificial death might be interesting for a redemption twist, but somehow i don't see it in her character. though she might "go away" in a different manner, taking the vajra with her.

I though about it too she's like the main character in the story even if she isn't the only one anymore. She is the one who had more screentime since day one. The whole story turns around her with Grace,Sheryl Alto around. So a Ranka dead at the end might also be the climax of the story.

This could explain why a second season is not planned except the financial question.

The story is about a love triangle, you can't have a love triangle without Sheryl, that would be jumping the shark.

As for characters who are going to die, the authors obviously chose to invert survivors from the original series. As much as everything screams that Ozma is likely to die, logic tells me authors will keep him alive for a change. I think Bobby will die in his place to shield him from an attack.

Even if she leads frontier to victory at the end, realizes her mistakes, that alto isn't the only thing she can lead on... even if she does it , I hope they give her a radical change. She isn't the one responsible for the catastrophe but didnt' act like Sheryl said, a pro. Sheryl taked the role of the songstress in episode 20.

I don't know what they can do with Ranka for putting her in,( obviously it was supposed to be her role in the serie but it failed with an imposing Sheryl), the character who learn from his mistakes and transforms into a hero or a likeable character( for those who Ranka= heroine is unbelievable).

Since episode 12 ,13 I didn't see a turnaround in her character. With 5 episode to go, this is likely impossible to catch up next to Sheryl's total change in her character.

She can't end up like Minmay by ending the war in singing to after disappear and that's all, Frontier is safe, people live even if they barely died...

But this could happen until the two last episode.

People in Frontier thinks now she is an impostor because didn't do anything. Even if she wants to stop beeing a tool this is a bit late.

Her death seems the only way to make an epic end with a fantastic twist in her character.

Sheryl is already dying( many think she will live thought) so it will not be surprising.

So at the end, she dies, Alto and sheryl live .

Alto finds out about Sheryl dying after they become a couple, and there is no cure for her, so they spend what time they have left together, while Ranka runs off into the sunset with the Vajra and Brera in tow. To pull a Ranka ending now, is to make some of the most unbelievable story writing(read bullshit writing), you'll ever see in anime. Worse than Canvas 2 in many regards. Ranka's stayed stagnent for 20 episodes, yet all of a sudden, she's going to age 5-10 years mentally, and be the person she should have been by now? It's a little late, and a dollar short.

Check the spoilers for the next 3 episodes and see if you're still confident...

I don't see why it could be an unbelievable story. They didn't dropped the scene with alto and ranka in episode 13 for nothing.

They didn't left things from this episode as they are now for making it look like the most useless scene of MFrontier.

They choose instead to focus on Sheryl and Alto. And we ended up seeing what happenned in episode 20 between those two.

This is really difficult to defend her after episode 20 next to an amazing Sheryl but too soon to declare the party OVER

Brera, Grace and Sheryl are the only recent ones who are from Galaxy. sheryl is clearly the victim here and Brera doesn't even know who he really is.

Come to think of it, Brera is clearly a cyborg who doesn't have his childhood memory, just like Sheryl who doesn't remember her past but what Grace told her to remember. She also seems to have been modified even though she was human.

What I wonder is if Grace became the actual first victim of that virus, and lost control of her original body, so they transplanted her consciousness to a cybernetic body, ala GITS. But say in order to make it work, they had to use the same computer technology that made Sharon go from a mild-mannered hologram to a crazy psycho love-obsessed nutball. Grace's machinations are no less borderline sane than Sharon's were I think, and it wouldn't surprise me if some of that bioengineered tech from Sharon's final AI is built into her.

They wouldn't use such a outdated technology but she sure seems to be an insane character .

2nd pic looks like 2 people there, joined at the top of their heads... don't u think? i noticed this the first time i saw it... it looks very eerie... notice the outline of what looks like their hair... and there are more 'pairs' in the background too.

Grace may have betrayed the team, and run off with incomplete research on a way to control the monsters they created, while Mao and Ranka's mother may have found the answer after she left, and implanted it into Ranka before Grace's machinations caused the vajra to attack the station.

This episode has, of course, re-raised the question for me as to how "natural" Sheryl really is. I don't understand the language, so this is all speculation based on the visuals; hoping someone can straighten me out

On a side note, all of these developments make it feel more likely to me that Sheryl won't survive the series. I'd still bet that she does (I imagine her fortunes will finally turn within a few episodes), but I can definitely see a plot arc where her illness overtakes her. Sorta a Guld ending.

It's looking a bit iffy for her here, but It would be too much dramatic if she dies from illness.

Once you hit rock bottom, you can do only one thing , rise again ( or stay in the hole but Sheryl ....., giving up ??!! I doubt )

The episode definitely had it's share of wtf moments. Right now, just too many questions, and not enough understanding to know what's going on.

What I'm starting to wonder.. how long had Sheryl been taking those pills? Was it something that Grace only started giving her when she came down sick, or is it like a daily vitamin she takes? Also, I really can't tell for sure whether Sheryl was hooked up to plain medical equipment, or they may have been upgrading her. She may be part cyborg all along, which would probably be one more reason Grace replaced her blood sample earlier.

I almost wonder if she was a normal human back then, and became a victim of the virus.. but they saved her consciousness and implanted it into a cybernetic body. Maybe the same chips that let Sharon go nuts also allow that sort of thing to work.. it could also have led to her consciousness being corrupted over time by the computerized portion.

Here is my crazy theory ( seems plausible for me thought ):
