  1. Actually Oberstien appears as a major character earlier than Mariendorf... he was present during the fall of Iselhorn and advised against almost every course of action, then was relieved. Upon returning from the fall (episode 8), he then ingratiates himself with Musel/Lohengrahamm, which launches his machinations.

Mariandorf does actually appear earlier, (I believe in the Kastrop Rebellion) but there is no suggestion she might become a major character. You're right though, I probably should have included her and thats an oversight. I kinda like watching the generals operate I guess. :p

You have a good memory. I just remember that he encoutered Lohengramm or Kircheis , I think it's the last though, at some ceremony when his eyes showed signs of weakness...

Talking about Hilda, she was the woman who dressed constantly as a man,so she was an outstanding female character, but it didn't mean anything though , since you said it she appeared earlier. ;)

  2. Not really. The name at the bottom of the screen for the first few times we see a character was a enough to get me to remember them later when they didn't show it.

Man, how did I not post in this thread :p

The names at the bottom are key... also alot of the main characters reappear alot. For your sake the main ones on the Empire's side are (These aren't really spoilers)

    Reinhard Von Lohengramm(musel)

    Siegfried Kircheis

    Oskar Von Reuenthal

    Wolfgang Mittermeyer

    Joachim Von Merkatz

    Paul Von Oberstein

    Neidhard Muller

Oberstein appeared towards the middle so where is fraulein Mariendorf ?

  3. This is exactly what I think.

    - Sheryl saying all the time ''I'm Sheryl, Sheryl Nome''. We all know you name you damn insecure b*tch. <_< JUST SHUT THE HELL UP !!!

    - Ozma wanting to prove he is a man at every occasion possible surely because he doesn't want to admit to himself the INDISPUTABLE fact he is gay. So he found a good way to deny his homosexuality in ''protecting women he loves'' lol.

I didn't read the comments above me but I missed it, funny!

Magick has been in macross since macross 7 and macross zero so I have gotten used to this.

I still didn't get over the " germs: go to Sheryl's belly" part ...

My fave character is probably the vajra: they think with their guts so they are like cockroaches which can still live long after you have cut their heads off. Sure they are mindless, but that is what makes them unique monsters. I think they are much scarier than the bugs in Blue Gender. Fast, expendable, attacks in swarms. And they are caring for their mother. Not their fault they are so damn ugly! They can survive in space too. I think they'd make great pets. Forget the ghosts, they are obsolete toys.

Since ranka is one of them, I voted for her. Without the power of that insect love song, everyone would be dead. Sheryl's pop songs didn't awaken the monster's memories of bug love. She couldn't connect to the insects so they couldn't become fans and own her song and identify with it.

    My,my... Poor Ranka

  4. 1 Ranka

    2 Ozma

    3 Michel

    4 Brera

    5 Alto

    6 Nanase

    8 Klan

    7 Grace

    8 Sheryl

    9 Luca

It's not like I prefer Grace over Sheryl, but I think you can see how Grace was an important character even if evil she has a meaning to exist.

I know, here the major part of members are rooting for Sheryl. But I didn't find her that amazing except in one episode the 21 .

It's as if they extended Sheryl's character in the story just for her to be the rival in love for Ranka.

Of course , she is Mao 's granddaughter but what was the link with Macross Frontier ?!How did they use it ? So Mao gave her the earrings and that's all ?

In episode 18 we learned that she was dying, and everybody made speculation about how she will be cure...

I would have never imagined that Ranka would say/do something like " go into her belly" and fantastic, Sheryl is cured ...

So what was the meaning of spending time with Sheryl's disease if it was to cure her in the most hilarious and simple way ?

I think it was a huge waste of time for the story and they could have describe more Bilrer's intention or place in the story, same thing for Ozma, or even add more information about Galaxy and fights ...

I even wonder now why Michel died since he was supposed to be the reason for Alto's choice between Sheryl and Ranka in the story.

Here, also this was a waste not of time but for his character. I would have love to see him Macronize since he had zentradi origins too, but, no, instead of that they made him play the big brother role for Alto, who forced him, to face his feelings for nothing, since at the end " you're both my wings" pretty discredit Michel's meaning in the story.

But I liked his character and how he was as dense as Alto in a way since he wasn't aware of Klan 's feelings for him, but was aware of his reponsabilities towards his role on Frontier, unlike someone else who noticed it at the end  ...

If I have to blame Kawamori for the characters, I will say that the gap between Sheryl and Ranka was too big and Ranka had no chance to win the audience unlike Sheryl.

Sheryl like I said it here before, had all, the face, the body, the voice , the forceful character, ...

Ranka, she, had her cute face, a body of a 12 years old girl, a shy character....

Now when we compare the two, it's clear Sheryl had more qualities than Ranka.

But it was all right since it was compensated by Ranka's place in the story, her role with the vajra which were supposed to show how a shy girl like her could become a mature woman throught the story plot. (I don't even think Ranka was supposed to take Minmay's road until the end...)

But, they put the " Sheryl is dying " card which was pretty unfair for Ranka since at that time, they didn't show us how Ranka has matured ,which happenned in the 21 when she leaved Frontier.

So obviously all viewers took sympathy for a character like Sheryl who was at the top of her glory, and began to lose everything she had but kept singing and even began to show her inner beauty ? :o . This is a pure fantasy here; even Brithney Spears cannot do it....

They spended time to show how Sheryl wasn't the Sheryl of episode 1 but couldn't do the same with Ranka who was the main girl in the story ?

That's why I put Sheryll in the bottom of my list for the favorite characters. It seems she took too much screentime with her disease which was cured in 10 seconds and overshadowed Ranka,Michel,Brera's role in the story. Even before knowing she was dying, they showed us, how much she was the victim of the destiny or of random events but not for Ranka who was always compared to Minmay or Mao in the plot.

I know Ranka's chara design was done on purpose, her character too, but I'm sure Sheryl's place on the story wasn't initially that big if not, they wouldn't have made Alto says " I will kill Ranka" = Sakura's sentence who must kill her love, they wouldn't have made that fast cure for her, ....

So at the end, I may be an intruder here, but I think Sheryl 's role in the story was to be a idol love interest, and that's how they showed her in the story.

Her dying was revealed to be an unnecessary twist in the story, which I regret profondly.

I hope Ranka will have the place she deserves in the movie.

  5. The music and the mecha fights make Macross a special serie. Nothing to do with Gundam...

But for the tactic side combined with the political one, LOGH fits better, even if there aren't mecha in there.

Anyway: Remember the old days? Before high speed connections, before YouTube, before the Internet?

Too young for this thread. ^_^

  6. Watch the first season which was well made, then the first five episode of the second season and I dropped it like Code Geass....

What 's with that come back in a feudal time and with this woman who kill people out of emotion ? Too much for me...

Wait to see for the season 3....

  7. I don't know what they could put in a second season. People say Galaxy VS Frontier but looks like it could happen on the final episode.

Nothing is better, than dragging the plot just because of the recent success. Code Geass is the perfect example.

If one of the three main character dies, you can say bye bye to a second season. If Ranka dies this is not a bye bye anymore like in episode 6 but Goodbye to another season.

Most of all, if this is Sheryl who dies ,with a second season , Macross will encountered his biggest turkey in his story.

But I think Ranka has highest chance than Sheryl to buy the farm at the end ,because Kawamori would not want to put a charm and buy a bulletproof vest

  8. Uhmmm... Minmay was the main girl even though Misa got the dude... check the Gold Book and Perfect Memory, which character to they always feature first? Also check 2012 to see which character was more prominently featured.

And as far as I know Ranka has more drama than Sheryl, she's got 2 dudes, an uncle, a best friend, alien followers, cool gadgets and the whole background story on how she rose to fame.. The story is more centered around her than Alto himself.

And it seems to me that Alto never liked Sheryl in that way... he's just warming to her now that she's dying.

    My thought exactly.

  9. FRONTIER IS BACK AT FULL FORCE!

Seems like Kawamori knows his fans, Luca actually called Ranka a traitor!

    Awesome episode!

    FV

Looks like he thinks he became a man since they leaved his cheek alone

She already is a cyborg. No upgrades needed. Also, she survived the ambush, so no new body at all.

Well, at least now the path is clear on how Sheryl will survive. She has the same bugs in her blood as Ranka does, so Ranka will save her by magic-whateverness-transfusion, letting Ranka have her "grow up" moment, because helping Sheryl survive will mean letting Alto go.

so Ranka will save her by magic-whateverness-transfusion, ? Too good to be true .

letting Ranka have her "grow up" moment,? she already had it since Ozma compare Alto with Ranka who for the first time made her choice...

because helping Sheryl survive will mean letting Alto go ? For sheryl to survive, Grace must tell the whole truth about her first. No one knows anything about her except she was picked on the streets. And everything doesn't turn around Sheryl and Alto... I don't understand the link with the cure of her disease by Ranka and the love stuff between Alto and Sheryl....

Did anyone else see implied AltoxSheryl love scene? He moves in for the kiss right as the camera moves up. That's how they do it in all the hollywood movies when they can't show anything for fear of corrupting the kiddies^_^

I didn't see it , just that Sheryl forgot to close her legs and to put the blanket

   ^_^

Grace sure likes her hopes and dreams too. Why do they have to grasp their breasts like that , seriously ?! What 's with this metal in the face like Brera...

I hope the 23 will be better... Hopefully Ozma comes back in the plot for good...

  10. You know there's a reference to the France gall classic, Poupée de cire, poupée de son in a Sharon Apple song, don't you? ^_^

 You just tell me that. I didn't know and don't even remember well the song you're talking about. So it might have not be so good :D . Well honestly I know by heart Ella elle l'a but I just know the chorus of Poupée de cire, poupée de son.

And I just listened to Idol Talk, that's the name... I know why i didn't remember.

Arkan is unforgettable for me but this song is just exactly what I said about songs like aimo wich are OK but songs like Arkan or LOGH theme whch are not .

I didn't want to talk about it knowing when I start this is difficult to stop, but to link it with Mfrontier (Mf),I find MF songs less martian than Macross Plus.

Voices, and Santi U << a lot of everything are excellent though but the rest is just too much WOW for me. you don't find music like a sai en in Mf which is good but really martian. Innocent green, or aimo are more pedestrian.

Ao no ether is a surprise I thought Anata no oto was .... not that good but the first one catched up.

We're all speculating she'll return with a horde of Vajra to save Frontier from Galaxy, but certainly she doesn't know any of this, and her leaving had nothing to do with Frontier, and everything to do with her and Ai-kun.

You like her way too much!

Here is my thought after seeing how people can't stand her or would be glad to see her six feet under :

1 If she lives and Alto choose her, ( yes, that's the problem for you here ^^) ; She or he dies. or we see some vajra/human babies at the end

2 If she died before Alto choose her, Alto goes to Kabuki and Sheryl after have been experienced the most humiliating thing aka being choose over a child becomes a workholic.

3 If sheryl lives and Alto choose her, Ranka lives. They can't kill her , but Alto dies after Ranka's fan made their call...

4 If Sheryl died before Alto choose her , well I don't see her dying....

    ^_^

  11. hmm... maybe you should try to not look at it as being an anime, but rather as a sci-fi series that happens to be animated in the japanese style. with today's CGI techniques it is quite do-able as a live action, although it would likely be more expensive per episode than star trek.

One of Macross' biggest draws for me is that it does a pretty good job of presenting characters across a wide range of nationalities and ethnicities (granted ethnicities other than asian and caucasian are still somewhat token roles), and thus avoids much of the medium's pitfalls of japanese characters appearing as 'caucasian'. are you saying that because it is an 'anime' that all the characters should be ethnically japanese? I thought not ^_^ . same should go for the musical score.

woohoo I own page 24 lol

You're right . But the sci-fi series nowadays don't have vocals, though and it's just my personal opinion about the french music which is not that selling this days...

note that I use the term ethnicity when referring to groups that are historically considered to be races - I do not, have never and will never acknowledge that the classification of race exists - and indeed it does not exist within the realm of the biological sciences.

You're perfectly right here. Only one race should be classified. But you know, the only way to do so, it's for the green chap to appear

I talked about the probability of the existence of another alive form with my father today or rather yesterday( coming up with the scientific excuse ..) and he was like  .." What movie did you go to see at the cinema, encore "

    Goodnight.

  12. yeah I do expect Ranka to come back a changed woman - a la kerrigan, but not necessarily so dramatically different... ie her outside would have changed, but at heart she would still be Ranka.

but at heart she would still be Ranka. She is on the Otsu phase from Vagabond, but I expect her to change in a big way, outside like inside.

I doubt they will just made her look beautiful to show how she became a woman, knowing the core of anime is " don't judge a book by it's cover" . ( I don't speak of all the anime nowadays when you see more boobs than scenario  ) Each his own !

that's why i can't see the Ranka of now ( Alto kun, Alto kun... ) came back like that. If not well, the vajra can keep her there

She has an urgent need to grow up mentally to be able to face up Grace & cie and physically to please you, if it's for the love plot.

Well, a kind of Relooking extreme :D

I think Sheryl is going to go through some more growth as well before the end, as she finally begins to realize her mayan abilities (yes I still think she is related somehow). I would love to hear her sing 'Arkan', given the snip of her rendition of 'aimo' so far. it would be quite interesting.

just think... sheryl's 'aimo' seems much more soulful compared to ranka's original version - more nuanced. if she (may'n) can do the same for Arkan... damn...

Sheryl was amazing in episode 20. she didn't think one second about her but about people around her... She really grew up and has nothing to do anymore with the annoying woman at the beginning. It's a shame she didn't grown on me as far as to make me switch Ranka with her, but again, each his own.

I think we might see her and Ranka singing aimo together but I don't remember well the aimo sheryl singed; it was 10 seconds though...

About Arkan...I was not a fan really... french songs should be used for Celion dion,Halliday, Leslie, Pokora, but not for japanese anime.

No offense, for the ones who love it but really, if diamond crevasse was singed in french by sheryl, the sayonara, sayonara nando datte aka au revoir au revoir plusieurs fois in french = I turn the volume down. Many will disagree with me..or not but japanese songs fit well anime. When they mixed japanese/english this is as good. But when this is all in english like in LOGH ( yes again, but i love this show), I don't even remember the OP theme so much it was boring.

So songs like Aimo even if they don't mean really something is OK but like Arkan which looked like opera song remixed for a ED is to avoid for me (yes, I'm far from being a patriot) :)

  13. I thought the whole scene was pretty much perfect, right down to Ranka looking to be on the verge of a complete break down as she saw Alto making all the wrong decisions.

For everything people have read far too much into with Frontier, I'm shocked at the things people miss.

I love that scene too, and with the music it was perfect.

But I do understand people who are not satisfied with this episode : this intense scene at the end made forgot all the fight from the beginning

I hope now to see Ranka come back which will be the most epic episode ! I don't care about her figure, but it could be interesting to see what will be people's reaction in front of another Ranka, a HOT Ranka ^_^ ... Alright, dream on, but at the end of this episode they made her age of 4 years...

  14. What about her decision to go to Gallia IV?

back to the topic at hand...I *kinda* get why people are calling her selfish for her decision to leave...but I guess I view it differently. It seemed to me like she was planning on taking on the Vajra all by herself...and that she wasn't really thinking she would be back (you don't say "Sayonara" to someone you love if you're just going out on a little jaunt).

But I guess I can see how it seemed like she was abandoning Frontier to the tender mercies of the Vajra.

I guess we'll find out in a few days, huh? ^_^

I was talking about prison cell in the other thread and I meet the police more than normally tonight during a drive... Nevermind.

I think she explained it in a bad way. When she talked about taking ai-kun to his friend... this was a naive speech which can be interpreted as a selfish one .

It seemed to me like she was planning on taking on the Vajra all by herself I think that too.

People tend to forgot that maybe she's a child by moment, I admit it(alto kun, alto kun...god) but it's obvious for her that she is the one who is luring the vajra.

In epsiode 21 she is even the bait to kill them. She is pretty aware that the vajra are attracted by her and if she leaves, there are high chances that they will follow her.

I can't say this is the same for Galia IV because Michel,Nanase and Luca helped her to make the decision. Michel was even the one who brought her there.

And Alto was the one she thought when she made this decision. Well, Sheryl too by default, though.

But It's completely different in the episode 21. She didn't think about Alto when she choose to quit Frontier. This was for her( this is true, she wants to know more about her past , why her belly is glooming like that.) and for leaving Frontier in peace.

I can't say this was also for Frontier people because like you said, it was as if she leaved them without their number one weapon, her.

So she leaved Frontier in peace not the people  ..... You're right, we will find out in few days ;)

  15. I'm sure that if Alto HAD shot at Ai-kun, and the bullet bounced on him and hit Ranka in the side of the head, there's a number of people who would've loudly proclaimed it the best episode ever...

 . But they would have loudly complain after seeing how the plot would have been so easily resolved( the main plot wth Grace like the love plot(well, for that I'm not that sure )) .

Oh, I loudly proclaimed my dislike of Ranka a lot of times, and before episodes 20 and 21 a good lot of it was because of what you said. But in the last two episodes Ranka has demonstrated an unprecedented selfishness, to the point where she leaves the whole of Frontier to die via Vajra ( seeing as to the best of her information, Frontiers weapons are mostly useless against them ).

One can only make excuses for Ranka so many times before certain character traits become crystal clear. For Ranka, everything is only judged in relation to her. Her love for Alto, her joy of singing, her pain because of Altos rejection. The feelings of others seem to not make a very big impact on her perceptions of the world.

This is the first episode when she makes a decision on her own you can't blame her for, at last, doing it .

By the way, maybe you should change your avatar.. looks like he 's shooting someone 's name in ^_^
