  1. Finally got my hands on Volume 2. Still have to land a copy of Volume 1 though.

    Some questions

Is that Xena Paltrow character supposed to replace that one male chief engineer (Robotech's Dr. Lang)?

Why does Misa faint dead away after the first transformation when she recognizes Hikaru, Minmay and the wreckage of VT-102?

The Char on page 126, is he a Kaifun?

  2. The show was gorgeous no doubt but what the hell was going on with a giant birdman who eats a young native girl and then kidnaps her into space? One of my biggest attractions to Macross originally was its plausibility, even if the entire show was fantastic with space dogfights against a numerically superior army of alien clones, it was rooted in reality. Now I'm not against "magic" and other such fiction but I just felt like I was blind sided, almost betrayed by the franchise when the story took the turn that it did. I've not seen Macross 7 but I plan on downloading it soon and I'm hoping that by having already been surprised by Zero that I can enjoy it. Frontier looks promising to me and perhaps a little closer in spirit to the original. Anyone else feel this way? I invite you all to pick apart my posting and show me where and how I'm wrong.

It's more confusing if you're viewing with the Robotech definition of Protoculture in mind, instead of the Macross

    precursor race.

Actually, I think Zero comes closest to science fiction than any of the other series so far (well, it rips off tbe premise of The Day the Earth Stood Still).

I love how they couch the backstory of Zero in between the lines of the Bird Human myth.

  3. Almost certainly not... for the reasons RDClip stated, and also because Robotech is a literal nonentity in Japan, thanks to the way the licensing contracts that permit its existence are drawn up. The business with having an all-new logo for the New U.N. Spacy was, in all likelihood, just Kawamori underlining the changes/evolution of Macross's setting that he elaborated on in his Otona Anime #9 interview... the change in the government and presumably also the reorganization of the military following the events depicted in Macross VF-X2. They have basically zero need to distance themselves from the original U.N. Spacy logo, since the copyright dispute court rulings did affirm that Big West/Studio Nue is copyright owner on that design.

Didn't the UN Spacy kite show up in the historical Legend of Zero episode anyway?

  4. Except the PSP game handles more dynamically than the PS2 game, which allows for quicker more fast paced action.

I wonder if Ultimate's alternate Real Mode view made it into this game (doesn't seem so from the screenshots)? I dislike the default VFX-2 style controls while flying in fighter mode.

Any idea what's the new gauge on the top left corner?

  5. Oh they are still out there. Just that as far as we know there is no formal first contact between the Supervision Army and Earthlings.

During the operation of the acquisition of the first factory satellite a wreck was found. It was abandoned for fear of a booby trap. Hypothesis was it met those Zentradi fleeing the battle of Space War 1.

We can only speculate that Supervision Army crews are composed of human size and Zentran size due to the structure of ASS-1. Macross 7 episode 2 Exsedol ponders about their enemy's identity being familiar only to dismiss it as they are using miclone accommodating Valkyries. Since the sponsors of the Varauta Army were former masters of the would-be Supervision Army, paint jobs may be close enough for their mecha.

Millia and Chlore were famous for one upping each other in kill scores.

I think Exsedol's vague suspicions at the start of Macross 7 is more on the lines of "variable fighters are only known to be fielded by Earth human miclones", bootlegged Varauta mech designs ripped off from UN Spacy models, pointing to human renegades or some lost colonization fleet.

I don't think there is indication that the "Supervision Army" the Bodolle Zer fleet was fighting consisted of any miclones.

Does the Macross Chronicle expand any more about the Supervision Army?

  6. Has an upgraded/reverse engineered workhorse Regult tactical pod ever appeared anywhere in the main continuity?

I know some variants appear in VFX=1, but assume they don't actually look like jaggity wireframe polygon models as per the game art.

Is the whole lineage considered obsolete? Zentran forces, even renegades, seem to use just mostly Queadlunn variants out of the original Zentradi arsenal anymore.

  7. I always wondered why the girl in the unitard in the previous picture was holding a GAU-12 gunpod. Is she supposed to be a Zent?

It appears to be Sera/Sorji from Mospeada (who actually resembles her original appearance unlike certain other Invid "princesses"), equipped with the gear from the Invid Enforcer suit.

  8. Update, I listened to Tommy's additional verbage about this. Here's what Tommy has said about it.

    -It's a small production

-Supposedly Tatsunoko is working with them on it

-It is gonna be a "movie length movie", which I don't know what that means

-It will be animated (Flash or full animation is anyone's guess)

-They haven't put anything out yet because they want to cross-promote the LAM with Shadow Rising

O.K., don't know about all of you, but something doesn't fit in all these comments. On one hand, it's too small to be a movie, but he calls it a movie once. Yet, they don't wanna promote any movies because WB's pull. I sense puffery here, the deliberate inflation of the facts. OK, now let the misinformation continue.

Maybe an extended Robotechized Special Edition of Love Live Alive? LOL.

  9. I have a question for Gundam Series, is it broadcast in USA?

All Gundam Series is less than 65 episodes, it mean all Gundam Series can NOT broadcast in USA?

    http://www.mahq.net/animation/gundam/gundam.htm

    wikipedia:

Harmony Gold's cited reasoning for combining these unrelated series was its decision to market Macross for American weekday syndication television, which required a minimum of 65 episodes at the time (thirteen weeks at five episodes per week).

    65 episodes?

    Who's rules?

Firstly, Gundam (Wing) came along in a different time and environment.

Secondly, Macek tried to get the thing in as a daily weekday syndicated series (whether this is actually desirable for something as non-episodic as Macross and Southern Cross is questionable). A weekly show would have less strict requirements.

One question, did many of Robotech's contemporary animated shows typically broadcast five days a week in the US?

  10. And yet, Kawamori has done far more for anime in the past 30 years than all of the above. I think people expected a recapture of that glory when Tytania was announced, but look what happened there. Me, I'll hedge my bets with Kawamori.

To be fair, his character work for Tytania did look good. It's just that the adapted story is rather dull and doesn't compare to the epicness of its spiritual predecessor LOGH in any way.

OT)H, Macross 7 Trash which he did write also had fantastic art and weak plot. Hopefully, Macross the First does turns out better.

  11. ^

So a guy who flies a variable fighter jet with giant speakers on it via a guitar hero controller is cool, but the whole hover tank thing isn't?

Aside from the fact that Southern Cross has no place in a Macross game to begin with, the hovertank niche is already filled by the Monster class destroids, which actually have the heavy armor and ridiculous firepower to play that role.

(Not having them manned by incompetent samurai/knight cosplayers is just a bonus).

Go bug HG for a Southern Cross game like Battlecry and Invasion if you're that desperate for that stuff.

  12. If it's Dave Deitrich, then it's a Robotech game. And one of my personal pet peeves is when people try to plump out their Robotech games by throwing in a bunch of Macross stuff. <_<

It's just a game rules system, with seperate sections for Robotech and Macross. It's not like he's subverting the fluff to jam fit it into the Robotech universe, is he?

Heck, I remember playing in a Gundam game using modded Palladium Robotech rules once.

  13. Streamline came out with some good stuff, but I always hated the fact that they (almost) never released subbed versions of their titles. Still, as far as dubs went, they were pretty faithful to the originals, and the voice actors were rarely terrible.

Hmm, I've only watched FoTNS and Windaria/"Once Upon a Time"out of Streamline's works in both their dub and the original, and I have to disagree with the pretty faithful and accurate part for those two at least.

  14. I'm getting one!!!

It's about time someone revisited the "Joke Machine" toyline!

Hell, yeah. Hope they do/ redo other valks in the series.

  15. anyone know why there is spoken english in the background noises of DYRL?

    isn't that odd?

The Air Traffic Control chatter? Isn't it always in English? The beginning of Frontier is the same.

Also, I assume they are not actually universally speaking Japanese to begin with since UN Spacy is an international organization, and the show just segues into Japanese dialogue for the benefit of the audience, since almost all the written text we see in the shows are in english.

  16. What I would really like is a re-release of all the Novels - preferably in either the form of an e-book (fat chance) or a large "collected series."

Haven't they already been re-released? Last I checked, the re-released and obnoxiously retitled "Macross Saga" First Generation books were still available on shelves in two omnibuses. Southern Cross and New Generation/"Invid Invasion" have one book each. And I think that the three original sidestories for each of the generations also had one anthology book, though I can't seem to find it.

Dunno about Sentinels, though, but then, no one gives a fart about the Sentinels, not even HG these days.

I'm surprised they haven't tried to novelize Shadow Chronicles, though, or try to rejuvenate their franchise through storytelling in cheaper media to overcome budget constraints.

  17. I know the PSP Go is worthless, but cant you get the Japanese version and DL Macross Ultimate Frontier there? But you gota be in Japan to DL it which is kinda lame... lol

Is it even on the Japanese PSN download store? I have to give the PSP Go a thumbs down as well. That thing has poorer ergonomics even compared to the PSP, and the sliding screen looks damn fragile. The only thing going for it is the smaller size.
