  1. Theaters get a bad rap for the ticket prices they have to charge. Almost all of the ticket sales go towards the rental of the actual film. The theater itself makes the real revenue from concession sales.

Add that to the fact that the 3D movies require a digital projector, which cost about $80,000 EACH, compared to the old school reel projectors at $15,000, and were already installed in the theater. My theater has 12 traditional reel projectors that were imported from Germany just sitting upstairs in storage because there is no use for them.

But here is the kicker - the 3D movies are played on the same digital projector as the normal 2D movies are. There is no special hardware involved to make it 3D. However, the people who go see a 2D movie on a new projector are not hit with a surcharge. How is that even fair?

  2. I'm kinda worried about the guy who cut off his hand. I can't get into it without spoilers though:

What if they make the guy who cut off his own hand the leader of the town that attacks the group in the prison? He was missing a hand after the katana chick cut it off, among other bodyparts. The guy who kept his zombiefied little girl chained in the house and had all her teeth removed so he could kiss her...

  3. You do know that the .22 Long Rifle (.22LR) is a rimfire round, right? As is the .22 Magnum (.22 WMR).

I have an inherent distrust of rimfires, for anything other than casual plinking.

    Graham

Just my ignorance showing then, all I know is that I have to specify .22 long rifle for my Walther G22. Also, to reinforce your misfire statement, Remington rounds jam consistently in my gun, where as Federal round work perfectly.

  4. I was actually referring to the the .22 caliber long rifle round, which is what my gun takes. Didn't think about the rimfire rounds, which do jam with different gun manufactures.

The .22 has enough velocity to enter the skull, but not enough to exit, causing the bullet to bounce off the back of the skull. This obviously has no effect if you don't get a headshot however.

If I'm correct, you can get a .22 longrifle pistol pretty easily.

World War Z references the pistols they used as "Meg". Short for Megatron, because the weapon had an extended suppressor, folding stock, and telescopic sight, (and hopefully a chrome finish), resembling the 1985 Hasbro toy.

  5. Hmm, this may belong in the weapons-banter thread; but just what would the ideal weapons loadout be--considering it'd have to be something the average layman could scrounge up themselves, from local gun shops, etc?

My initial thought is: damn a Baretta. Against the undead, that 9mm's liable to just make some pretty little holes in 'em--I'd want some more stopping power, like something in .45 ACP (preferably two). Gimme:

    M1911 or S&W .45

Mossberg 590 or Remington 870, a "tactical" if possible

Drawback to the Mossberg might be the longish 20" barrel--but I suppose the extra rd capacity would be worth it, and just try to practice and learn to work with it in close quarters.

I know some might wanna go over-the-top and say something like: "yeah, I'd try to make myself a home-made flame thrower, like in The Thing or something." But something like that could wind up blowing up in your face--pun intended. (And someone more versed in zombie lore help me out here if this is already debunked as a valid option) But I'm thinking: since they're undead, zombies don't have the same oxygen requirements as living creatures, and as such, may very well not be affected immediately by immolation (O2 deprivation, scorched lungs, etc); i.e., you might "light they a$$ up," only to have them keep coming at you. And about the only thing that could be worse than a zombie coming at you, is a flaming zombie coming at you. :o

Honestly, I think the best sidearm against zombies would be a .22 caliber pistol. Compact, relativity quiet, and ammo is crazy easy to come across. After all, you don't need stopping power, since body shots will not stop a zombie, but a head shot with a small weapon will take them down with no problem. Also, the .22 round tends to bounce around inside the body, doing damage inside the brain cavity.

You can have a .45 and blow a zombie's arm off, and not phase it one bit.

In World War Z, they talk about the "balloon Effect" that explosives have on living organs. The pressure wave makes the fluid in your body burst. Zombies may have less fluid, or the fluid they do have is more like a gel. Grenades that would kill a room full of people only drop a zombie if a fragment damages the brain.

In short, you want small and light weapons that ammo is easily replenished. Large caliber isn't needed, accuracy is what counts.

  6. I don't think the gore was over the top, just pretty much what would happen when the zombies attack.

The guts and brains are kept to a minimum, as are the severed limbs.

I personally like the show because it is a human drama in a zombie apocalypse setting. If anyone has read the comic series, they can attest to that.

  7. So Gabriela Cedillo family is going for legal action.

Gabriela Cedillo's family have filed a legal case in Chicago, claiming Paramount and the film's location managers breached a duty of care.

The 24-year-old was left partially paralyzed and unable to speak when a thick slab of metal became dislodged from a stunt car and struck her head.

    Rest of the story. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-11485712

    And. http://thecount.com/2010/10/05/injured-transformers-3-indiana-extra-gabriela-cedillo-sues-paramount-for-accident/

They're suing for $50,000, which is nothing considering to the permanent damage.

50k? thats a multi-million dollar lawsuit at the very least.

  8. My buddy got Front Mission Evolved on PS3. I tried it, but I am absolutely awful at shooters without a mouse + keyboard. I'm so bad, I bought Resistance 2 and returned it a week later because I could never get the aiming down.

So I'm going to see how he likes it, then buy it through Steam.

BTW, I am so glad I bought Mass Effect 2 on Steam instead of a console, I would have walked away from one hell of a game by simply being no good at aiming with a controller.

  9. There is an entire section for your Wanzer's loadout, and you earn skill points as you progress.

While I'd like to see FM stay true to its roots, can't say I'm upset about it becoming a third person shooter. But whenever Square ventures out of the RPG world they achieve disastrous results.

Square Enix can make some very impressive non-RPG games.

  10. Rear visibility? Isn't that what sensors are for? Rear visibility was never an issue in the games, there were cameras for all of the views. Think of it as being able to look up into a rear view mirror so to speak, except its a wide angle camera / sensor.

  11. I met a guy on a job once who raved about EVE, he was in the Goon Squad or something like that. He went on for days about all the freedom in EVE, and honestly, his stories were very easy to get engrossed in. It was all very fascinating. Until I asked about how a new player with no in-game connections would fair. "Oh, we grief newbies until they log out".

Yeah, there went my enthusiasm, right out the window.
