  1. Not really happy about the GG interpretation of the microorganism that has infected Sheryl. Clearly they are virions, and are portrayed as such by their structure. Not that I expect the translators to know much about Virology.

Take issue with what the script writers had Luca say and not gg. He said specifically "aru saikin," which translates directly to "a certain bacterium" - not virus. He uses "saikin" (bacteria) again later in his elaborate explanation as well.

  2. First, providing the AVI is not easy. I had to spend last weekend learning all the software to re-encode the video and audio streams and make them sync up while I spent this weekend learning techniques to improve video quality vs. file size and hard-encode *.ass script files. Then there's also the time it takes for me to encode and proof each run of the file. You all would have complained about the first file I sent azrael - it had noticeable video artifacts and used an unedited *.ssa export of gg's script, which is horrible for song lyrics and background announcements. I haven't even bothered to try and encode the fonts gg uses in their release. As it stands, I need to keep the file size under 200MB in order to use Megaupload as a direct distribution method as well.

Second, Mac users should be using either MPlayer OSX Extended or Perian.

  3. Really, just do something about it if you want to watch it ahead of your time. There are numerous tools out there, especially for Windows, that will allow you to extract the video/audio/subtitle streams and convert them into something more amenable. Some tools that come to mind are mkvtoolnix/mkvextract, VirtualDub (w/ subtitler), avc2avi, etc.

Encoding in another format is extra time and CPU processing far greater than that needed to play the files and no one is required to give it out for free. Fans aren't entitled to having every single fansubber cater to their every need. Anyway, it's a shoddy job, but here you go: Moved to episode thread...

  4. In the shelter, that kid, Eddy and his dad ... were they the son and husband of Canaria :o ?

Yes. Eddie questions, "Will we be all right?" and his father reassures him, "Don't worry, Eddie. Mother and the others will definitely - definitely - protect us."

"But I'm still scared, Papa..." "Don't cry. If it comes down to it, I'll give my life to protect you."

  5. Thank you. Too bad it is not for mac.

A new recommendation for Mac users: MPlayer OSX Extended. The main draw for this one is the performance H.264 decoder. A lot of players for OS X haven't had good codecs, but this MPlayer OSX revision has an option for "Fast libavcodec decoding..." which improves audio/video syncs. Now my Mac plays large resolution files on par with my similarly spec'd Windows machine.

  6. Well, just going on the main spoiler, in hindsight the flags were apparent in the last episode:

Michael laid it on really thick about how useless he was and basically finally was able to push Alto along in the triangler with Klan's help. He also reassures Luca that he's not alone. After all that, he's no longer useful as a plot device as he currently existed. So, there were two options: develop him into something more over the course of the series or kill him off to develop everyone else. Given the lack of development he received early on there just wasn't enough substance to justify continuing on with him. He was simply a one-dimensional cool womanizer; the sister backstory only served to explain why he became a sharpshooter, which really wasn't all that important, and nothing really much else.

Klan however extended her lifeline by becoming a micronized research wunderkind in the lastest episodes and by way of Michael by default. After revealing a new side to her, they weren't simply going to dump that story investment. Michael, however, got nothing new these past few episodes, so his survival plunged quite a bit.

...And that ends my emotionally disconnected analysis as I haven't even seen the episode, yet.

  7. Eh, just picked my copy up today--turns out it was issue #1. Should have gotten it first before ordering the other one. I don't know what's up with the date on the notice, but it doesn't really matter. Maybe I'll consider selling the extra copy off or something.

Ah, sorry to hear that, papabear. 8/7/2008 was definitely the issue date of the second volume, with HMV and Amazon.co.jp listing it as such. Hopefully, Kinokuniya SF will be more accurate on their later notices.

  8. On the subject of mkv files, the problem is burning them. I know some people have older machines that have trouble playing them, but my biggest complaint is they are very tricky to burn and burn successfully.

I presume you mean you want to be able to play them in a standalone DVD Player. Basically, you need to re-encode the file. Here's a instructional link, although I can't speak for its reliability:

    http://www.afterdawn.com/faq/convert_video...m#selected_item

  9. Heh, so next episode we're going to see Ranka's zentraedi heritage rear its ugly head. Ranka's going to deck sheryl, and then she's going to knock Alto down and rip off his shirt. The scene will cut away and there will be another big debate as to whether or not "Myung" was raped or just had "her" shirt torn.

The sniper will get distracted by Ranka's actions and get so engrossed in watching that President Glass will make a safe getaway. Ai-kun, looking out for Ranka, sneaks up on the sniper and does the face hugger thing.

Forgot to add how bad Ozma and Cathy act.

I'm ready to put 100$ on that. Anyone interested ?

I'd say Ozma probably calls up Michael and we get a sniper scouting sniper act for the Glass event. Not as humorous, but slightly more plausible. Then again, everyone did look held up.

And, yeah, at first I didn't catch that Cathy knew they were being watched and questioned, "What was that?" - since it was so out of character.

(Hah, now we've got multitudes of posts about the Fansub thread that I needed to go back and quote. Yay!)

  10. A lot of people who are having problems are simply playing files with resolutions and encodings their computers cannot run. It has nothing to do with the specific container format, but how they're often used.

Often times, high-resolution H.264 encodes are packaged into MKV containers which is where all the blame on Matroska comes from. H.264 encoding coupled with high resolution, not the MKV container, is what brings a lot of computers to a crawl.

With the AVI container, the simple fact is that it doesn't really support H.264 which is a benefit right off the bat for slower computers (i.e. those who know encoding will never put H.264 in an *.avi). The encodings placed in AVIs are usually XviD, DivX, or WMV, which are less resource intensive. Additionally, smaller resolutions are usually packaged into AVI files, though high enough resolutions will cause problems for older computers, but it's a much a higher threshold to breach (e.g. XviD 1280x720 is fine but H.264 1280x720 is not).

Basically, if you're going to complain, complain about the right thing: H.264 encodings with high resolution. Though, with how MKV is often used, it's understandable how it gets a bad rap (but that's because the container itself is more functional and powerful). And, yes, these things really should go into the Fansub thread. The better place to ask gg if they're willing to release kinder encodes is likely there

  11. Hi, I'm looking for these Perfect Collection 1 cards are present: TV-16 and MG-3 in Near Mint/Mint condition. I'd probably be interested in a few loose wrappers (depending on how they were opened/cut) and the possibly box from the set as well. Feel free to PM me if any of you feel you might be able to help me out.

Did you guys do know that there's going to be a new Macross (Frontier) trading card set out soon?

Oh, Valk009, the RA-03 is currently on eBay for rather high price of US$11.00 shipped internationally from the States. And, if trueblueeyes is around and still needs No. 77, Yahoo! Japan Auctions has it for a Buy It Now price of 1000 Yen (~ US$10) with deputy/proxy needed.

  12. By the way, I don't see the 1st issue listed anymore on HMV. I suppose it's sold out now. Only took a couple of weeks to do so it seems. Get it where you can, while you still can. They still have the binder and issue 2 in stock, and of course you can pre-order up to issue 8.

Yes, HMV is sold out, so they no longer list it in their search. You can still use the link that was posted by Fly'n Brian to access the product page. Here's what they say on the page (accessing it with English cookies set):

"We regret that we cannot accept orders for this limited item as the available quantity has now sold out"

Looks like those interested are going to need to keep up with the releases or face the possibility of missing out.

  13. Topic Title: Call for Help in Resolving Perfect Memory Publication Date Discrepancies (chopped due to length)

It seems that Macross World's section on Perfect Memory has at least one error and may be more. As I'm sure potential buyers use that Macross World page as a reference for purchases, it's probably pretty detrimental for there to be errors, especially for such an important book as Perfect Memory.

The obvious error is that Macross Perfect Memory was definitely printed in 1983 (Showa 58) - see here for pictures of a 10/10/1983 print date. The rest is pretty hazy in terms of concrete resources, but the information I've managed to gather is here: http://macrossworld.com/mwf/index.php?show...st&p=639943.

The short of it is Egan Loo doesn't seem to have a correct initial date of Macross Perfect Memory anywhere within the Compendium and this error seems to have propagated into Macross World. However, one citation in the Compendium points to Aug. 10, 1984 (which would correspond to an "OUT 8") and this would obviously point to a reprint date if correct, given the information above.

Therefore, a question to pose is whether there even a 1986 reissue at all. Given a blurry photo of a reprint, I seem to make out an 8 and 10 for Aug. 10, but the numbers for the year look less like a 61 (for 1986) and closer to 59 (for 1984) if anything. Of course, there could be more than one reprint, providing for 1986 regardless.

So, I guess what I'm asking for are clear photos of the top right corner of the front of the dust cover, above the S's of the "MACROSS," and likely the Table of Contents page (pg. 260) of the book (this is where the 10/10/1983 version has is publication date printed inside). I'm hoping to find at least two dates on the TOC page, as the 5th reissue (from 1992) of the Gold Book has two dates printed whereas the first edition only has one.

Photos of the first edition would help, but photos of the second would likely be the kicker to seal the deal. Thanks.

Added a photo from labsenpai's Gallery: http://macrossworld.com/mwf/index.php?auto...=si&img=204. It definitely looks looks a 59, the first digit is definitively not a 6. (I'm willing to be a lot don't know what the actual cover of the book looks like - under the dust cover.)

  14. I did some research on the bootlegs of Perfect Memory within the forums and the following topics are the most informational.

    1. Macross Perfect Memory, Got burnt i think
    2. Perfect Memory, A few questions about my copy
    3. Macross Perfect Memory Book, Is it worth buying?
    4. Looking for the book MACROSS PERFECT MEMORY, 1984.10 with the original poster
    5. Perfect Memory Book, In perfect condition (This one's added mostly for the beautiful pictures :p)
Some of the main differences mentioned.

    • More durable card stock of the dust cover of the original
    • More metallic-looking color printing of the mecha on the dust cover of the original
    • Purple tint to the helmets on the dust cover of the bootleg
    • Blurred/faded color prints of the pages near the end of the bootleg
    • No bootlegs of the OUT 8 printing
Nonetheless, according to some accounts, the OUT 8 did likely come with a poster as well (tom64ss and wm cheng in [2] and Hiriyu in [4]). Perhaps that section of Macross World does need some revision.

Some additional information on the (OUT 8) reprint:

    1. http://www.rightstuf.com/resource/us_availability.shtml
    2. http://www.fanfic.net/~colette/15/16-5-18-6-5-3-20.htm
    3. http://macrossworld.com/mwf/index.php?show...st&p=166295
    4. http://www.macrossworld.com/macross/where2buy/tiamacross.jpg
It looks like the Aug. 10 198? reprint was supposed generate interest for a legitimately sponsored translation of Perfect Memory and the TIA TV volumes as the "best kept secret of 1987," but it sadly wasn't meant to be.

(Note: Aug. 10th appears to be the reprint date from what I can make out from blackjek's picture in the topic of the fourth link. However, I can't make out the Showa year. To me it does looks like 59 which would coincide with Egan Loo's References in his Endnotes, but it could be a 61 for 1986. Would anyone with a second/later edition like to help clarify?

The earliest print date I know of is Oct. 10, 1983, and there's nothing leading me to believe that it isn't the first edition. Macross World apparently propagated a mistake/typo Egan Loo made in the Compendium [1, 2 (see the "November (Part II)" section)].

  15. A small question, but I've been curious as to why you've been listing the Perfect Memory with Out 10 on the cover as the second edition lately. Is it perhaps in part because the book lacks the insert poster and because of the numerical ordering of 8 and 10? Macross World lists "Out 10" as the first edition (even though it the original publication date is wrong - should be 1983 and not 1984). And, while I don't have a copy of the "Out 8" printing, my "Out 10" copy only lists one publication date (opposed at least two or more for the original and reissue(s) in a reprint).

While it does seem a little weird for the higher numbered one to be later, the 8 and 10 actually denote the month of publication - and don't reveal anything about the year.

Regardless, I would have definitely picked up some of your books if I had known about them earlier. My first printing TIA set isn't quite NM/Mint, and I overpaid on the Megazone 23 Settei book you made available recently - without knowing its exact condition (though it looked pretty good in pictures). Alas, I already have copies now and don't quite have the budget allocated to take in extras, yet.

    Good luck on your sales!

  16. I zoomed it no protusion. You highligthed the starboard side.

B25's bow up until now has been protusionless. The staff added the bow protusion on this ep to make B25 look cooler.

    Okay let's try it again:

    macrossfrontiergunshippde7.jpg

You should be able to see the disconnect from the side (wouldn't it actually be the port side?) and hopefully the tip of the protrusion. And, yes, this isn't a big deal but it's fun to discuss. ^_^

  17. Are congratulations in order? I know Rinkya placed the winning bid on the Flash Back 2012 cel in question. I'd say this one is slightly better than your (previous) one from my point of view.

Actually, I thought it was sold at above 150,000 Yen. I remember bidding on it until the last minute at which point it exceeded my budget. I thought the buyer just flipped it and decided to resell. Maybe I am wrong.

Nope, it's the same seller. It's even the same auction ID, with my old bookmark leading to it again. Whenever, Yahoo! Japan doesn't list the auction with the "close_icon.gif" shown below and redirects to some login page instead (which it did), it usually means that the seller pulled it. And the exact auction often re-appears under the same auction ID weeks, possibly even months, later.

    close_icon.gif

I'm thinking this seller is actually hesitant about letting this one go (which I can entirely understand). But, yes, starting it a low bid puts serious bidders into a different psyche in the final moments and can generate higher bids as they compete.

Yup, I got it. See below.

That is a very nice cel. Congratulations!

I had inkling this was you when I saw the Rinkya bid. Congrats, and thanks!

  18. I am keeping my tabs on it. I was quite surprised to see it offered with a starting bid of JPY10,000 (so low after it was offered with a starting bid of JPY150,000 last week). The seller may actually be smart to do this and get multiple bidders to drive up the price. I remember seeing that cel pop up and get snatched for a little over JPY100,000 2~3 years ago. Let's see how that one does this time. Well, if I don't win that one, I am not too disappointed since I have a similar cel that is about 1 or 2 shots around that one.

It's back at a 198,000 Yen asking price. I thought I missed out on how it ended (it was at 101,000 Yen when I was able to last check it), but it looks like the seller pulled it before it could end.

There is also a nice FB2012 cel that is up for auction too.

It seems that one finally sold, it went on and off Yahoo! Japan every so often.

There's a number of pretty good cels up right now from a particular seller/collector, though no seems to be biting even on the lower-end ones. I'm sure that Flash Back 2012 one is well worth the 180,000 minimum bid (with Misa and Minmay in the same scene!), but it's hard to get people bidding starting that high.

I was able to pick up this nice Claudia and Misa TV cel recently for a pretty nice price. It came with a few lesser quality supporting cels in the sequence, as well as the scene background.

    claudiamisave1.jpg

  19. Okay you win it's a pencil board. Who am I to argue with a Macross World specific section, especially when it's on pencil boards :o Happy now

Just wondering if you got out much

Well, Wikipedia wasn't cutting it, so I had to bring out the big guns! As for getting out, sure! But I like JB0's answer better, so I'll let him speak for me on that. :p

New PC. Bought this year. Along with monitor. Your comment has made me start thinking that the problem is another of the oodles that Vista comes jam packed with. If I understand it correclty, Vista uses the video card (or something similar) for day-to-day display operations.

It sounds like your MP4 files are probably H.264 encoded. Large H.264 files (file size and resolution) take a lot of CPU to process, and sometimes today's average computer specs still won't cut it without a good codec. You may want to look into CoreAVC.
