1. Unfortunately, ADV says Macross is too old so they couldn't get off-vocal versions of the songs... which is odd, since weren't they on the OSTs?

    351204

I suspect there is more of an issue with the record company's permission/license to allow a release of English transliteration of the songs, rather than anything else.

Mari is an accomplished bi-lingual song writer who understands the songs as well as the composer would, so she's qualified to do the lyrics as well as sing them.

I suspect ADV didn't consider how much the fans would have wanted the songs in English (Duh!! You get the singer but not the songs... ). Especially considering they have never made an attempt to transliterate music from any of the other shows they've dubbed over the years.

Personally if they were smart, they'd contract Mari to do just that for them. It would give them a resource that was unavailable to them before as well as a regular income for her and the flexibility to continue to tour.

  2. I think the visual aspect vs. story aspect makes sense... and just makes me wish even more that someone'd go back and redo the series with modern animation technology and DYRL visuals.

    350956

    You and me both brother...

I really wonder if "Macross 3D" proposal was going to be precisely that, but I haven't seen much more on the subject, thus far...

  3. No offense, but LotR is a terrible example.  They were very clear that the Extended Editions would be made available in each case shortly after the originals.  Fans were given a choice between which one they would buy and choice is a good thing.  Though, as I rant about on my website, that didn't stop ignorant whiners from lamenting that Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema had somehow "cheated" them.

I disagree. It is still "double dipping", however what made it unique is that they were up front about it from the beginning and had enough respect for the fans to provide unique content for both disc sets, unlike most Hollywood studios.

I think a lot of people here are upset with HG for constantly just. . . well. . . flat-out lying several times in order to convince fans that no better or improved version of the their current releases would ever be made available.  Thus, when RT first came out on DVD, they said they would never remaster it. . . so you'd better buy these.  Then, after they remastered it, they said they would never dub Macross into english outside of RT. . . so you'd better buy the RT Remastered or the Animeigo DVDs.  Now, they've dubbed Macross.

That's far different than what happened with LotR.

The method of delivery and business ethics may be different, but the fact remains that it is still "double dipping" in the strictest sense of the term.

What LOTR did was show studios that they could "milk" the fanbase for two home video versions of the same movie, which has become common practice now. Some will buy both sets of the same release, while some will only buy one or the other.

Personally I don't have a problem with what New Line did. They could do it and so more power to them. Why not get all you can from a property, since the proceeds will go to fund other projects, that may never see the light of day at a bigger studio, that deserve to be made.

Those who feel cheated are ones who'd be cheated by lesser things anyway, IMO.

It's all about choice. I for one never expected a Macross dub, but now that it's in the works, fine!

I know the proceeds will go into the new Robowreck series and that is fine, it's their money to do with as they please. So long as they are too distracted to attempt to further supress Macross in North America, I'm cool with it.

  4. With Macross a cash cow project and RT an American house hold name, the risk of "brand" confusion is essentially gone, thanks to less than tasteful business practices over the years.

The brand confusion is as prevalent as ever.

People still believe Macross is "japanese Robotech" and that Southern Cross and MOSPEADA are "seasons 2 and 3 of Macross."

I don't dispute that, what I meant was that the ignorant masses "believe" RT came first and thus the RT brand name is not in jeopardy (as far as HG is concerned)...

Therefore, it is only to be expected that they'll milk the series for every cent they can!

    Well, yeah.

That doesn't mean we can't point out their shameless abuse of the fans.

We're preaching the same message, just from different points of view, man.

People wouldn't have plunked down the cash for the original releases if they'd known that one with the features they wanted was coming.

HG wouldn't have made a release WITHOUT the high-demand features if they hadn't intended to double-dip.

The reality is that all studios, including HG double dip, because THEY CAN... LOTR is a perfect example. They re-sold each film of the trilogy, twice, because the fans would buy it. It may not be ethical, but it's ballsy business practices that work.

I half-suspect that's why the sounds were changed on Robotech Remastered, just so people that held out and got the cleaned-up extended version might go back and get the originals just to have non-crappy sound effects.

I found the Remastered audio to be rather poor and not well engineered. Now it may have been my audio receiver at the time, but I really wasn't impressed.

Is it cynical? Yes. Has HG justified the cynicism? Also yes.

    350510

Hey I agree, I'm only pointing out their motives, not justifying them. B))

  5. As for DYRL itself, I honestly don't see why some of you have such a hard time reconsiling its place in the canon. The TV series (design & story) is absolute canon for Macross. DYRL reflects the technology & style of 2030 era Macross. It's been placed as a bridge between TV & Plus.

    350315

Actually the 1984 film should not be confused with the 2030 film referred to in the Macross universe. Kawamori admits there are two...

The 1984 film is correctly described as the visual canon of the Macross story (how the piece fits into the continuity of the whole story is a bit dodgy, since Kawamori won't give a difinitive answer on the subject).

The one described in Mac 7 is another production within the Macross universe that came out around 2030 which is responsible for inspiring Basra Nikkei to get into music (according to the Macross Compendium).

  6. Well let's keep in mind that Megaroad 1 may simply be an SDF1 chassis with super structure added on to it.

The SDF 2 was approximately 70 % finished before Global ordered it converted to a colony vessel.

The actual Megaroad class colony ship has never been filmed...

  7. Actually at the time it was 70 episodes, which is why Macek had to include that anime abortion known as "Southern Cross"...

Try 61 episodes you dumbsh!t. Macross (36) + Mospeada (25). And by the way, Southern Cross was not an abortion......

    343085

Oooh, name calling on the internet...I think I might cry...

Read my post and you'll understand where the 70 comes from...

Southern Cross was "CANCELLED" in Japan! Anime cancellations at the time, were simply notifications that the studio had X many episodes to wrap up the show, before it would no longer be aired. It was meant to run longer than it did...

It was a weak assed show to begin with and made even worse after inclusion into RT!

  8. Remember when they said there would be no remaster of Robotech because it wasn't possible?

That there would be never be an "extended edition" of Robotech?

And that there would not under any circumstances be a dub version of Macross, Southern Cross, and MOSPEADA?

Then there was a remastered and extended version of Robotech released.

    And now a dubbed Macross.

    347733

Well brother your first mistake was "believing" them!

HG has to raise moolah to pay for it's new series.

With Macross a cash cow project and RT an American house hold name, the risk of "brand" confusion is essentially gone, thanks to less than tasteful business practices over the years.

Therefore, it is only to be expected that they'll milk the series for every cent they can!

Fortunately it's ADV who's doing the dub and I have no doubt there are MANY Macross fans on that staff who want to see the show get the treatment is deserves. Hence the "A" list ADV voice actors assigned to the project.

The only topper would be for Mari to be contracted to "transliterate" the lyrics to Minmay's songs and sing them in the show (though that would require a separate deal between ADV and the record company who holds the music rights to the songs).

As I said, I'll be buying it and setting it along side my Animeigo set. :D

  9. Minmay doesn't fare much better.  She gets spurned by Hikaru after finally realizing that she loves him, and is left at 17 with a washed up career, and noone who really gives a crap about her.

    350012

But Minmay doesn't love Hikaru, at least not much more than a close friend. She realizes after Kaifun leaves that she is all alone and that she's sacrificed everything and everyone to make her dream of becoming a singing star, a reality.

In the post war eps, she is "trying" to reciprocate Hikaru's feelings and develop a relationship between the two, but ultimately accepts the fact, during the final assualt on the SDF1, that her first love is her music an nothing else.

  10. J. Micheal Straczynski had Babylon 5 planned for 5 seasons.  Unfortunately, B5 was in danger of cancellation several times during the run of the series, but none so critical as the cancellation possibility that occured during season three.  Warner Bros. was indicating there would be no 5th season for B5.  JMS and company were told that it would be best to wrap-up B5 in the 4th season.  In order to salvage the overall story arc of B5, JMS decided to write the story so it would end in season 4 and drop several side arcs to trim the story down.  The Shadow War was originally scheduled to be resolved at the END of season 4 according to JMS, leaving the Earth Civil War to playout amongst various other events in 5th season.

As it turns out, B5 was never cancelled and was renewed for a 5th and final season.  So JMS resurrected several of the dropped side arcs and created some further plots for the story (notably, the prelude to the Telepath War).  This became 5th season.

    349989

Ahh, OK, that does shed a bit more light on the 5th season...

  11. The way in which Macross was completed is much better and more interesting than the standard fare so typical of the science fiction genre.  Babylon 5 was another series that changed it's pacing due to circumstances placed on the creative team.  That series too had a fine finale, leading into the potential for other good tales (again, this is ignoring what we know after the fact).

    349936

Really? I'm an avid B5 fan and am not sure what you are referring to?

As I understand it, a Japanese TV season is actually 13 weeks long. This does match with what JB0 said. Going by this, most Gindam shows are techinically 4 seasons long. This also matches with most of the live-action Japanese shows which tend to be about 12 episodes long.

    349842

    Really?

I would have never guessed! Now I want to find out for sure!

These episodes were great showcases to show how the lives of the characters had changed. Particularly Minmay and Hikaru. Minmay now faced with the shallowness of her existence tries to rekindle the feelings Hikaru felt for her and ultimately finds that he is in love with another. I agree that Hikaru should have been written with a bit more maturity and self confidence (after all he appears to be the CAG by this point).

I still feel the series finale should have been about individual confrontations to offset the big bang of the final battle of the war. the story elements would still be preserved, just rearranged to be more exciting.

  12. I personally dig Miyatake's work a whole lot more, and think he's a whole lot more consistent than Kawamori.  Not only did he design one standout mecha in SDF Macross, he designed several:

    The Glaug

    349327

Sorry IMO that was the only weak link in the Macross show were the Glaugs. They were ill conceived and not an effective weapon by any standards.

I may not be the biggest fan of Mac 7, but even the Varuta's "modified" VF fighters were more of a threat to the humans than the glaugs...

  13. A more qualified expert can correct me, but I was under the impression that Macross was only commissioned to run 30 eps and it was extended by the studio and sponsors because if was such a huge hit.

I could be totally wrong, but that is the mythos I've grown up with.

    349816

As I understand things, it was planned as a 3-season show, they were forced to cut it to 2 to get on the air, and the success of the first season got them permission to do a third season. Of course, the show had already been rewritten for a 2-seaosn run, so they had to pad it out. Global Report and Phantasm were the obvious fillers in the "main" show, and then the final 9 episodes let them do some stuff they'd previously scrapped(Roy and Claudia's "courtship" and add a few new ideas in as well.

    349817

    Really?

That's unusual for Japanese animated television of that era. Usually the shows only ran a season. Hence why there are so many MS Gundam series. It was prefered to do a sequel than to continue a show for a second season.

  14. This past weekend I completed my semi-annual SDF Macross viewing, and I had an epiphany; After years of denial, I realized that I found the last arc of Macross to be really tedious to watch. Looking back at it as objectively as possible, they really should have let things end at Love Drifts Away. Heck, they fundamentally reuse the end of LDA for Farewell to Tenderness anyway! Hikaru resolves his feelings for Minmay (again) and realizes that Misa is in fact the one for him (again) when he is reunited with her after she narrowly escapes death (again.) I think its the way that the love triangle is basically reset that really ruins it for me. After the triumphant finale in LDA, Hikaru and Misa go back to their bickering, antagonistic roots with the added dimension of Hikaru making some incredibly juvenile lapses in judgement.

So if we put aside Hikaru ping-ponging back and forth between the two loves in his life (as if we're still in doubt as to who he'll wind up with at this point) what does that leave us with? To be frank, not a helluva lot. Our plot, what there is of it, meanders along for the remaining 9 episodes with no real narrative until the very end when Kamjin shows up to steal Christmas. The action scenes, scarce as they are, are fairly tepid. Even the Unification Wars flashback to our favorite drunk, Roy Focker, in Rainy Night consists of him flying in a stright line and shooting down a single enemy. Even more frustrating are all the plot threads that go nowhere. Insight into humanity's Protoculture-guided origins is met with grim faces and talking heads around a conference table, then dropped. A Supervision Army wreck is tantalizingly shown, but ignored. Millia and Lap Lamiz somehow recognize each other in a dogfight, but nothing comes of it.

Long story short, the last 9 episodes of Macross are not among my favorites, and I feel they come nowhere near the highs of the previous episodes. Your thoughts?

    349759

A more qualified expert can correct me, but I was under the impression that Macross was only commissioned to run 30 eps and it was extended by the studio and sponsors because if was such a huge hit.

I could be totally wrong, but that is the mythos I've grown up with.

I do agree that it would have been nice for the series finalle to be a more personal one.

A confrontation between Mira and Lap Lamis, Misa and Minmay, Global and Kamjin and Hikaru and Kaifun....

The war ends with LDA but the personal conflict continues until FTT. If that were played out more it would have worked better, IMO.

  15. Now with copied parts I can build the other two girls   (but I have no idea of who they are... I don't have this game)

...and I STILL not sure which leg is better  <_<  :

      - with long leg she looks more elegant but the proportion is wrong

      - the short leg is correct, but sometimes she looks small

I thought after build the other girls it was more easy to decide, but no...

    348932

OK, having never played either game, I was able to research a few things.

The first figure is Milia and Max's daughter (can't recall her name off the top of my head) who appears in the "Macross 2036" game. The other two figures are characters from the "Macross: Eternal Love Song" game that appears to take place during or close to the same year.

Anyone who has more detailed info is invited to chime in... B))

  16. A lot of people complain about Finescale modeler because it does not contain much sci-fi subjects (almost none actually). I like the magazine. The production values of the magazine are top notch and like I said, all of the techniques can be applied to whatever you are modeling. It is also relatively cheap, and in English.

    349051

Actually, the reason why SF subjects are so rare on FSM is only because SF modellers don't submit step by step projects as much (if at all, lately) as the mainstream builders do.

I've seen many articles on SF subjects as well as Gallery submissions over the years, but almost none lately.

That is the main reason I am encouraging wmchen and the other talented modellers on these forums to submit their step by steps to FSM.

The magazine promotes ALL genres of modelling, but if no one submits articles on SF subjects then none are published. It is for no other reason than that.

For general tips and techniques it is an amazing magazine, essentially written by kit builders. They also have specialty publications for dioramas, aircraft, cars, space craft, etc.....

  17. Of course, most of you will be able to strip off the black paint and substitute blue on the underside of the heat shield.  Not me.  Yamato gave me a heat shield with a crooked skull.  My approach was to scuff the top of the heat shield, paint it blue, add a skull decal, and brush on lots of Future.  The result didn't turn out too badly; however, looking closely you can see the edge of the sticker -- I'll fix this later by redoing the heat shield with a waterslide.  A stock Roy heat shield and mine:

    348239

The way to "flatten" a sticker is very very time consuming. Essentially you clear coat it several times, sand the sticker area down and clear coat again until the layers of clear coat eventually even out over the sticker....

It isn't impossible, just very time consuming...

  18. any progress?

    347722

    It is finally done.

I will post a wallpaper size at some point tomorrow hopefully, but I am tired now.

Thank you eveyone for your patience I hope you like the outcome.

    347932

Buddy we fell in love with the "in progress" part, so I'm sure we love the final result!!

    Thanks for all the work.

Are you going to do multiple resolutions?

    Like 800x600, 1024x768, and 1600x1200?

I've found that starting with a 1600x1200 and simply reducing the image gives the right sizes without any loss in quality...
