  1. Perhaps it was part of some false flag operation(Roid did mention having a plan at the time the bomb was dropped, which turned their wings black) to give windemere a precedent for war? I also heard someone mention that wright was too kind for his own good, so there is also the possibility that he defected to windermere.

  2. I've started reading the tie-in manga that focuses on the aerial knights(specifically keith and roid) when they were young, and it really helps to flesh out their motives and characterisation a lot more. Is it possible that the lack of information we have so far due to the presence of the tie-in manga, or should we get more information later on in the anime?

  3. I just can't see that, combined arms still means a level of coordination, and we just don't see that in Delta. You can't argue that the Windermeres were anything but outnumbered from the beginning. The reasonable explanation for the mooks were that these guys were castoff in a backwater sector. In combined arms tactics, you still have to do your part. The tactics of a carrier centric NUNS fleet means the pilots have to be especially competent, because they are both the striking arm and just as important the defending arm of the heavy guns and the more vulnerable carriers.

From that perspective, even if the individuals aren't all aces, a full squadron of them should be able to work together to fight off the ace with few if any losses. Because if they can't do that, then they would fare very poorly against any kind of truly organized fighter attacks.

Good point. Another possibility could be corruption in the NUNS leadership and regional differences in management, but its just speculation at this point. The reason for the continued string of windermere victories could then be due to the fact that the var all but shuts down communication/coordination(as part of the fleet in episode 15 were visibly affected and unable to act before keith went in), along with the notion that the regular forces may not know how to deal with the sigur valens and other possible protoculture technologies in that situation. Then again, var infected pilots did show some organisation back in episode 4.

  4. I would be interested in how a standard NUNS battle fleet would be organized. The general doctrine appears to center around distant strikes using carriers as the long arm, and Northamptons and stealth cruisers more as defensive units. Have we ever seen a formal NUNS battle fleet or battle group? One where the ships would be used in more direct combat.

The closest one I can think of is the Galaxy rescue by the Quarter, there, the Quarter launched with Uragas, Northamptons, and Guantanamos in support. The fleet that was sent to Windermere is perhaps another example, but that was not different from a standard planetary defense fleet. It seems like outside of a Macross type centered group, the NUNS fleet isn't centralized about any particular type of command ship, perhaps a Uraga or a Stealth cruiser type ship. In a lot of ways, this seems strange since there are still rogue Zentradi fleets. In such a case, a standard defensive fleet would hardly seem adequate compared to the Zentradi ships that are more close combat types.

I would have envisioned a battle fleet being centered around a standard Macross class (SDF type) with secondary carriers, stealth frigates and cruisers in support, and may be a couple of Quarter type ships in advance combat role. That would give a rogue Zentradi fleet a run for its money. The Northampton heavy fleet with Uragas just doesn't seem as plausible.

Perhaps this could give some justification to the poor performance of NUNS pilots/mooks. Their presumed focus on combined arms doctrines means that they may have to trade off individual skill in exchange, considering the fact that the NUNS is a regular military force that is quite large.

  5. I'm seriously considering waiting for a VF 31A because I love the fact that its in a proper(and nice looking) aircraft gray, unlike the cream and light green drab that we've seen most of the time that is nice, but doesn't quite speak to me.

  6. What about the first release is so terrible?

    https://www.amazon.com/Chogokin-Macross-Frontier-Armored-Valkyrie/dp/B001UFVJZO/ref=sr_1_11?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1466895099&sr=1-11&keywords=macross+vf+25

I mean, if it's awful it's awful. But are they THAT bad? Or is it just the new ones are much better?

The v1 toys were apparently notorious for their structural problems. They just did not hold together well, and can sometimes even break on you(see CollectionDX's review of the VF 25S renewal). A key difference between the versions is that the v1 lacks a gerwalk support joint unlike the v2, in addition to not being able to do the iconic a-stance. The v1 parts are(according to anymoon) less detailed and don't have as solid a fit to the valk as the v2 toys. Furthermore, the v1s lack the detail of the v2 toys, and the general consensus seems to be that the v2 toys look much better in addition to being anime accurate.

  7. You should've bought it then, instead of questioning the simple math (addition of prices of 2 items and then usd-cad conversion). I don't appreciate being mentioned here like this, like it's my fault. I will not transact with anyone who insinuates that I'm not being fair, to try to haggle. I haggle but, I don't insult anyone while trying to get what I want. I also don't mention the other person on the forum when we can't make a deal.

Apologies if I was rude then. Won't happen again.

  8. I always had the impression that the yf 29 and vf 27 were test-bed/one-off production units due to their terrible operational versatility. Both of those units required specialised expansion parts, complex technologies and difficult logistics(e.g. the yf 29's fold crystals) all while being unable to have a diverse range of ordinance aside from the default gun pod + other guns and micromissiles due to the lack of visible hardpoints. So in a sense, both those valkyries and the yf 24 were akin to "concept cars" in relation to the MP units.

  9. Pretty sure that "overboost" has been factored in with previous VF specifications, given what Seto Kaiba wrote above about the listed thrust plus 15% being in line with the listed thrust of the YF-30, which uses the same engines. It just wasn't written out like this before.

The advancement of the VF-31 is probably focused in areas other than raw thrust-to-weight or G loading, like the Modular Container subsystem, sensor tech, and finally getting landing gear that aren't more than half way between the center of gravity and the tail end of the plane (something that's pretty much always bugged me about the VFs.)

And at a guess, the reason a lot of things aren't mentioned as being "advanced" versions when their predecessors were, is that by now the old versions - 8+ years old at this point - are no longer "advanced", they're standard. What used to be "advanced energy conversion armor" eight years ago is now just "regular energy conversion armor", with "advanced" being reserved for something that's really on the bleeding edge right now.

Oh, by the way I'm looking at the model kit instructions, and it looks like the Siegfried has two hardpoints under each wing - on is on the arm shield units, and the other is on the outer wing section. They're pretty clearly visible in the paint guide for the plane, and have their own warning stencils. They're not functional on the model, then again we've never seen the actual plane carry anything under its wings so far in the anime, so it's not like they need to be functional for anime accuracy or anything.

That makes me wonder if the VF 25 has been adopted by the NUNS yet(VF 25 with NUNS markings?), or if its related technology has been mass produced.

  10. Model kit promos and manuals and whatnot for the Bandai 1/72 VF-31J kit is out. Here's their PDF promo brochure:
Since the PDF has selectable text, it's machine translatable, so I plugged in some of it into Google Translate. To wit:
    ? VF-31J [sPEC]
    Basic design: Surya Aerospace
    Renovated: Chaos Valkyrie Works
Overall length: 19.31m overall width: 14.14m
Height: 3.85m (Battroid time: 15.33m ? not included laser machine gun)
Empty weight: 8,525kg (not including multi-purpose container equipment)
    Airframe design maximum load: 29.5G
(At the time of ISC operation is protected from both high-G aircraft, crew and equipment)
    Engine: Shinsei Industry / P & W / RR Co., Ltd.
    FF-3001 / FC2 stage IIC heat nuclear turbine engine × 2
    Space maximum thrust: 1,875KN + × 2
Fold Wave system during operation is up to about 15%
    Over boost is possible.
    High Mobility thrusters: P & W HMM-10A
Maximum speed: M5.5 + (advanced 10,000m / However heat limit)
Thrust Ribasa, three-dimensional deflection nozzle equipment
The big gun pod is labeled "Howard Co., Ltd. LU-18A beam gun pod", and the explanation given is that previous VFs had physical gun pods, but engine output is now great enough to support a beam gun pod and so the VF-31 is now officially equipped with one.
The knives are labeled "AK / VF-M11 Assault knife", with the explanation telling where it's stored (back edge of elbow shield), that it's made of super-alloy, and how the edge can be enhanced with the use of the pin-point barrier for extra force.
The "Elbow Shield" caption states that they're made from Energy Conversion Armor, and can be improved with the pin point barrier, then something about functioning as "Uchitsubasa" which I don't know what it means.
The "Arm rail gun (mini gun pod)" caption mentions how it's stored facing forwards in fighter mode and rotates around a fulcrum to face forward in Gerwalk or battroid, near as I can tell.
The model kit instructions have bigger captions for some of the items, but the scans are small so I can't see the characters well enough to transcribe them.

Surya airspace? Are we seeing a new make or is it the same old shinsei industries?

  11. Sadly, i couldn't catch the VF 1S Strike(Arcadia) preorder, so my only hopes for a first valk are ozma's VF 25S, Isamu's VF 19ADV, or any of the delta valks. Sadly, the deal I had with someone fell through due to a screwup on my part, so now idk where to find the vf 25 armored parts at a reasonable price.

  12. A true isamu yf 19 from bandai would be blessed, though at this point its just rumors and speculation. Also, would the "display piece" moniker also apply to Arcadia's VF 1 offerings?

  13. As for the arcadia toy, would you consider that to be more of a display piece rather than an actual toy? The concerns regarding durability make it seem like the YF 19 wouldn't hold up too well to regular use.
