  1. Yes, just this morning, in fact. Yamato Crew website announced production of series 2 (remake of Comet Empire/Farewell to Yamato) is ramping up. March Ship's Log newsletter will interview a key person in the new production. I'd recommend keeping an eye on the Our Star Blazers community on Facebook, because things will start ramping up again soon.
  2. I've not heard of them putting any money into this movie. They would have been paid for the rights to the movie, usually it's up to Hollywood to bankroll it. Unless you're talking about Japan making another Yamato movie. Which I don't think they'll do. Like I said, that movie served its purpose, and their main projects in Japan are both animated now. 2199's second series first, and then possibly picking up Resurrection after that.
  3. The live-action Space Battleship Yamato film served its purpose: it provided the initial funding for Yamato 2199.
  4. Since the Force is awakening around us, it's easy to forget there's new Yamato 2199 in the early stages. For those who aren't aware, this month's CosmoDNA update included the November Yamato Crew Ship's Log interview with Shoji Nishizaki about the Yamato 2 remake (and a bit about the live-action film).
  5. Even at twice that price, it's still half or slightly more than Retail price. Heck, it's even cheaper than Amazon Japan. The only disc out of the final three below 6000 yen at the moment is 7, which is currently half price. That's got nothing whatsoever to do with the prices of the later discs.
  6. Have you tried Yodabashi Camera in Akihabara?
  7. Gatlantis Nazca-class carrier 1/1000 kit. First seen way back in the second Yamato animated movie and the second TV series (Star Blazers: The Comet Empire), first seen in 2199 in Episode 11, then seen again in Ark of the Stars last December. Kit came out in late November last year.
  8. Yes, nearly 17 hours' flight time plus whatever stopover time there is... but I think he'd relish the opportunity nonetheless.
  9. Yes, yes it does. But before we know it, we could be meeting up in Tokyo for the first chapter of the Yamato 2 remake, seeing as how quickly we've gotten here from the Ark opening day, it won't feel long for another 12-18 months to pass which is when they're expecting the first chapter to be out.
  10. The authors are extremely grateful to the person who provided translation on that, it helped the commentary a lot. Also, the final travelogue chapter is up as well.
  11. That's a fantastic catch, assuming all the discs themselves are in good condition. I saw a few volumes with the cinema release storyboard books in the Shibuya store last December the night before the movie opened.
  12. Amazon Japan is probably your best bet, price-wise. CD Japan is another option, but they charge full retail where Amazon discounts considerably. Still, while it's a substantial investment (actually by Japanese standards it's pretty good value for money), I'd recommend getting 2199 and the movie Odyssey of the Celestial Ark (which many of us refer to as Ark of the Stars). There's not much point buying A Voyage to Remember though unless you're a completist, as it's only a compilation of the first 24 episodes. If you buy the Blu-Rays, you'll get to the end of the first volume and completely forget about what you paid for them. Plus, you'll be contributing to the production of the next series, which is currently in preproduction. So, I have to ask, out of those of the posters here who aren't already in Japan, who'd seriously consider going to Japan to see one of the chapter releases?
  13. It's like that. I've lost count of how many times I've watched individual episodes while working on the episode commentaries, but my enjoyment of them doesn't wane one iota. Which is saying something considering how many times I've watched Episode 14 in the past few weeks.
  14. At this stage, it's hard to make any call on that, simply because we don't know exactly what the Cosmo Reverse System did or didn't do at the end of Episode 26, past restoring Earth to its previous blue-green natural state. Aside from that, what else did it restore? Cities? Infrastructure? Those that had died? (we see that is possible via Mamoru's actions) Until we find out more about this, everything is pure speculation. I'm sure that's a question that will come up with the writers and director (whoever take the jobs this time around) once stories covering production come up. Regardless of whether or not the population is large enough to have sufficient staff for a fleet, the decision could be made so that what personnel are available could be distributed amongst as many ships as possible in order, or that they see that automation is a better thing. The whole moral of the story in the original was that the ship wasn't just the plates, bolts, engines, guns, and so forth, the ship was also the crew who sailed her.
  15. Good point. Quick rule of thumb with eBay: if it sounds to good to be true, it almost certainly is. eBay prices for the genuine article will almost certainly be close to or in most cases higher than the direct price from Amazon Japan. In this case, that $86 US price probably would include what freight would cost you from Amazon Japan. On current mid-market rates (USD 1 = JPY 123.89), the Amazon Prices translate to the following in US$: 2-disc regular edition: $79 1-disc regular edition: $50 Amazon Collector's Edition: $72.29 Shipping to the Australia for one of those is 1200 yen, so I imagine to the US it would be around 3000 yen, which is currently about $26.
  16. Depends on where you are and what your budget is. Amazon Japan or CD Japan are normally your options. Amazon Japan Two-disc Blu-Ray w/English Subtitles on the movie and extras disc (9798 yen + shipping) Single-disc Blu-Ray w/English Subtitles on the movie (6228 yen + shipping) Amazon Exclusive Collector's Blu-Ray Edition - Same as the Two-disc set plus Storyboard book and Collector's Box to hold all the Blu-Rays for the series and movies (currently on special at 8957 + shipping, list price 12,800 yen) Limitations on Amazon Japan is that they solely use DHL which means you cannot ship to a PO Box. Prices above include 8% sales tax which is removed for foreign orders. On the upside once your order ships it should get to you inside a few days. CD Japan CD Japan have the Single-Disc and Two Disc editions for 7800 yen and 9800 yen, respectively. They have cheaper shipping options available, though. Keep in mind the DVD version doesn't have subtitles and is Region-2 locked. Blu-Rays are all-region and have English subs.
  17. A lot of us have. I first saw it when it opened in Tokyo last year and have it on Blu-Ray. Personally, I loved it, save for a bad continuity issue which bugged me. Covered a number of elements of the classic Yamato universe, introduced some old favourite classic characters, and had epic space battles. Also it adds some lead-in story for the recently-rumoured remake of Space Battleship Yamato 2 which many fans have been imagining since they first heard 2199 was being made.
  18. If you're talking about Space Battleship Yamato 2199: Odyssey of the Celestial Ark, simply known as Ark of the Stars to some of us, then yes, it's already out. It was released in Japanese cinemas last December and on home video in Japan in late May. Still readily available on Amazon Japan and CD Japan.
  19. Well, actually they did. With Serizawa almost certainly in jail for his role in the attempted mutiny aboard Yamato, Okita would be the ranking UNCF officer (since Todo is administrative, not military), and would have been acting as Earth's legal diplomatic representative as well. To that end, he would almost certainly have been in a position to negotiate anything necessary to secure the Cosmo Reverse System. In any case, there are other ways to get around it. For instance, if the guns are actually built but sealed to honour the treaty, being unsealed only as a last resort, when it's seen as inevitable that Gatlantis is going to reach the solar system; leaving the capacity to retrofit them in an emergency; or inhibiting ships carrying them from being able to warp, meaning they're completely used solely for self-defence. Another option they may go with, given it was only used in Farewell to Yamato and numerous video games that included the Andromeda, is the dispersion-type wave motion gun, capable of obliterating multiple starships with one firing but not being a planet-killer. Given Japan's Article 9 and their general disposition towards self-defence and non-aggression in the real world, I'd say a real possibility is that the home defence fleet will be WMG-equipped but incapable of leaving the solar system.
  20. Plus, there's no guarantees that any ship will have wave-motion guns. Shock horror, Earth just might abide by the Treaty of Iscandar. Not that it's any sign of being canon, but an interesting thing noted about the Yamato cellphone game in Japan is that campaigns include ships. This includes the EDF Battlecarrier with no wave-motion gun. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CLEilMCUcAEY2q5.jpg
  21. Andromeda also needs more capability to bring all of its firepower to bear on a target. Broadsides are made nearly impossible by the atmospheric wings blocking the rear turrets, countermeasure missiles like Yamato had, and wave motion shields. Maybe lay out the turrets like Arizona with turrets on the side (and maybe even a ventral turret?).
  22. It doesn't work that quickly though. No decisions would likely even have been made until numbers came in on the sales of Ark of the Stars. If how long it took for the first episode to get out from when it was written (three and a half years) is anything to go by, it could be a while before anything is screened.. As Tim said to me after people started talking about the possibility of this after Ark of the Stars' sales figures came out, it takes time to find backers, hire production staff, schedule the voice cast (who may all be busy with other projects), write scripts, and so forth. While it shouldn't take quite as long to get that all set up this time, the scheduling side of things may take a while to fall into place. And barely 2 months since Ark's home video release. The sales for those would have more than likely been a go/no-go initial funding for the project, the same as the live-action movie was for 2199. Ark took over a year to make from when it was announced, production was only finished a few days before it premiered, and the cinematic release had serious quality issues to the point where large numbers of frames were re-done right from the layout stage for the home video release in May. I'd like to see them take their time, get the production done with good quality in the first place. Hopefully they'll go back to the quarterly release schedule and not try and rush it through (this would mean delaying the TV broadcast by a couple of months so the cinematic releases don't have to be accelerated and as a result the quality suffer.
  23. Personally, this is one thing I really don't see happening. I would expect to see the Hayabusa still as the main aerospace superiority fighter, with the CT2 design, if used, to be in the specialised role of torpedo bomber or heavy strike (the Hayabusa's limited armament capacity being a limiter of its role). If anything, it could be used to succeed the Cosmo Zero, which does have a heavy attack capability. I fully expect Yamato to retain her Zeros and Hayabusas though.
  24. These things take time. To give you an idea of how much time, the first draft of the first episode of Yamato 2199 was written in October, 2008. If that's the level of preproduction they're at, assuming this is true, then it could still be some time before anything gets on screen. Still, another trip to Japan to start saving for... I'm hoping to be there for at least the first and last movies this time, if they release the next series like they did the first.
  25. Uh, that's Yuki after she tears her dress in Episode 23.
