  1. Bonus question: If Freyja's accent was US-localized, what would it be? Midwestern? Appalachian? Is it especially weird-sounding Japanese?

I know nothing about her Japanese, but if I were to cast a dub, I'd give her Andrea Libman... better known in some circles as Pinkie Pie. Just for the somewhat-obvious reference, which is more than the colour scheme.

  2. I think both debaters are right.

Ernest Johnson is not a great captain in combat (he is much better at providing for his troops outside of battle than at leading them in battle - and it is the "outside" part, the support, logistics etc, that Gramia was probably learning from him).

But also there does seem to be something fishy re the NUNS captain and Windermere.

  3. Just realized...

Why did the NUNS not have a second nuke on hand? Especially if they had a suspicion that this stuff might happen. They could just fire it at the new structure and the SV, with a chance to take them out (likely not in a total kill, but they could still have a chance of disrupting the fold song).

Adds to my difficulty suspending disbelief. No strategists around? On any side? (Except Bogue, who keeps trying to take out Walkure and that actually makes sense - and is not a spoiler because he has been doing it since episode 1 or something).

  4. Neutral vote and my cursor hovered over Negative for a while. Animation ok, sometimes (mecha) even good, but I had a hard time suspending disbelief.

    - Johnson's potshot at SV takes out the fold amplifier blindly?

    - The Elysion takes a main cannon shot and suvrvives with moderate damage, good enough to shoot a cannon afterwards, with the captain and enough crew to perform the feats unscathed?

    - Mikumo, on the other hand, now gets hurt, while she remained unscathed after taking an Itano Circus under a small force field?

Also music OP'ed, but that is par for the course in Macross. In this universe, Freyja's singing buffing Hayate and simultaneously impacting Keith, thos changing the balance between them, makes sense. But I really don't see why Hayate could not follow Keith to finish him off.

And I agree with the question - why does Kaos abandon the battle at that point? The original decision to retreat and take civilians did make sense, but the balance has started to shift following Freyja's and Johnson's antics. The Wind Singer was out for a time. Why not fold away the island ship with civilians but continue the battle, dealing more damage to Windermere forces? Even if they could not retake Ragna at this point, they could aim at grounding the SV there, which would give them a chance at retaking Al Shahal.

Also a question: what was the structure, apparently come kind of carrier ship, that the Walkure were on? I thought they were on top of the Island Ship, but when Freyja jumped off, the shib aoove her was not round. Also if they were not on the Island Ship, why did they see the shot from SV aimed right at them? And when Gramia said something about not allowing a threat to persist, I would have expected the SV to fire at the Walkure, not a bunch of random civilians?

  5. What the hell? Did the Protoculture mix Seals and Cats in Seacats? There are marsupial Cats on Zola. Voldorans are cat people.

Does this mean Vajra wasn't their only obsession?

Well yes, as I wrote already, there seems to have been a Protocatture.

  6. Just rewatched the Frontier movies and realized I don't understand something.

Why did the Vajra destroy Macross Galaxy?

They were attacking Frontier because they wanted Ranka. Sheryl, another person they might possibly want, was also on Frontier at the time. So what caused them to attack Galaxy and (at least in Movie-verse, don't remember how it goes in the series) to shoot at refugee ships? They were not yet under any human control, as far as I could understand.

  7. I can just see little kids rocking out to Basara.

You can see them animated in Delta, too, so it looks like this is a well known phenomenon :)

I'm struggling with how to explain the obligatory "shower scenes" in even tame fare like Macross, Southern Cross and Gundam.

Well, my kids did not have a problem with the SDFM shower scene. She is just washing, so what, we all do. The panties episode of MF series would be way too much, though. And as it turned out even Universal Bunny was too much.

  8. I am hoping they don't block it, but add subs to flip HG the bird and reach the Western fans.

If it's the one I heard of they will have seiyuu comments. I'd LOVE to view that with subs. To hear JUNNA's thoughts in particular would be really awesome.

(JUNNA could voice them in English but I guess she won't do that before she actually lands at a Western con).

(And yes I'm fanboying her and I'd totally go to a concert (and is there a CD I can buy without paying a fortune to the Japanese post service?))

(And this has so many brackets it's looking like LISP code)

  9. PS - Isn't it great that Elysion would not lift off from its resting place, but instead terrify everyone while flying directly over their city as it maneuvered to the water? I get that they probably wanted to use the ocean as a way to baffle the blast from the engines as she lifted off (much as they do in a real-life rocket launches), but why not go further out to sea instead of bathing every citizen in hot boiling steam in the process? To say nothing of the fish and mercats turned into cooked foodstuffs?

I thought it was using the gravity engines at that point, not the rocket engines? Then over the sea the rocket engines kicked in with their own distinctive noise (and animation).

With gravity engines, this move might have been an intentional "parade".

  10. My ears are still ringing from 7. He can watch that on his own!

If he can, he likely will, and his ears are gonna love it if he is like certain other boys :) Totsugeki love HEAAART!

(I actually like the music in 7 too, but not the animation and the length, so my kids watched that one on their own. Even though I still theoretically want to, it's just too big. Perhaps I should get to it but skip over the battles?)

  11. Ah yeah! I did post my experiences from time to time but never realized this should really be a thread.

So my 11yo son yesterday got a watch of both Frontier movies. He asked to skip over the raunchy part of Universal Bunny (his idea, not mine), so I guess if we get to the MF series he'll need to skip the panties episode.

He bombarded me with questions about who the real bad guys are - the Grace/Galaxy team or the Mishima/Frontier team. I was not sure what to answer though it seems to be "fanlore" that movie!Grace is somewhat better than series!Grace.

Lots of other questions too, I don't remember many of them. I'll ask him which ones I should find out for him on the Forum.

Previously, a couple of years earlier, he (then 9) and his brother (then 4) got to watch DYRL then SDFM then Macross 7 and enjoyed it all, especially Macross 7. That's when I understood that M7 was probably made *for* preteen boys - they were quite grand with all the stock footage and the repeated songs and the similar battles - and the BOMBA! They also liked the song Dynamite, but I had to keep them off the OVA because of the lesbian rape scene. I'll probably let the elder boy have that soon, in my presence.

He also started on Delta and likes it a lot. And Delta does not seem to have Frontier levels of raunch in it, so it will really suit them both - except the younger one (now 5 and a half) can't read subs, I'l have to get him a voiceover.

I never tried giving them Plus because even I have a hard time tracing stuff in Plus. The elder one should probably be ready for Plus soon enough, though.

  12. Neutral. I really really liked the animation. I am not sure about the plot.

I am generally in agreement with others that there seem to be holes in the plot.

Among other things, they did arrange for protection of Ragna in general, so they did think there could be an attack on the planet. But somehow they did NOT arrange for protection from a Var-based attack which is really what counts. I think they should have left a singer behind. Probably Kaname would have been a balanced choice - others are two tactical couples, Freyja-Mikumo and Makina-Reina resonate in battle, and absence of Kaname would have left their power in a strike force intact while providing a degree of defence if Ragna is attacked.

They will now have to race back against time and it's all the fault of the commanders.

On the music front - not sure if this counts as a spoiler - "by the book" development continues - this time, they put the singers on the back burner for once and showed that they can do classical-style background music a la SDFM, perfectly suitable for the video sequence. I t seems to me that their new music team got to read all the music criticism the franchise got in the past. They have responded to criticism of M7 for repeating really good songs too much - and now to my own past pet whine, criticism of Frontier (especially movies) for lack of music diversity.

They might not have the sheer power of Kanno or Fukuyama, but they are showing their work, and it's good work, too. So are the singers. I'm still impressed by JUNNA's English and by JUNNA in general, but now all five had their shining moments and the ensemble started to appear - the acapella in ep11 is something I really hope will be out on an OST soon.

  13. The show seems to have taken a big step back from fanservice in general, which I think is a good thing. It doesn't offend me, but there were several times in Frontier that left me rolling my eyes and feeling like I needed to apologize to my wife that this really wasn't "that" kind of show. I'm liking Delta's more mature presentation.

Yes Yes YES THIS. And I am saying this mainly as a parent. I have two sons, who, when they were 9 and 4, enjoyed SFDM and M7. And wanted more. And I could not give them Frontier because, mainly, of that panties episode. I will give them Delta now.

(The elder boy is now 11 and I will get him Frontier, with some explanation, but for the younger boy, a 6 year old, I don't think Frontier is fitting, exactly because of that.BTW I also did not give them M7 Dynamite because of the attempted lesbian rape).

Wasn't she naked (albeit featureless) in the end of episode 1?

Sailor Moon type nakedness does not count, usually, for this type of law, but bring in any actual features...

Anyway I like the way they are taking it. There's fanservice galore, just not the simple/naked variety. #TeamMakiReina

  14. Yep, because the Evangelion kids where all older than 18. ^_^

Unfortunately some countries' censorship law has tightened up since the original EVA. I do suspect some parts of EVA are technically illegal in Russia and Ireland, as both of these countries ban "depictions or descriptions" of sexual actions by children (under 18 in Russia, 17 in Ireland) without much clarification. (I am from Russia and live in Ireland so I try to keep up with the laws of these two),
