  1. I watched the first (double) episode of Umamusume Pretty Derby because base on the trailer I thought they would screw up. They did not, and I ended up watching all 13 as they got released. The end result so far was me getting into actual horse riding and also producing a fanfic about the non-thoroughbred horsegirls in that world and its history including a "Genghis-chan" (sorry, it's in Russian; I failed to make up a proper framing device in English).

It ran in Spring'18 season but is still current - OVA was announced (should have been released the day before yesterday on BD, but apparently was not).

Spoiler: No she's not, thankfully. As awesome as they are to look at they are a pain in the back to have.

I was told as much (that is's a pain in the back) by a certain friend back in Russia. She has a size 9 Russian, which I think translated to a G; she had a size 6 aka DD or DDD, but then she lost weight and the hopes and dreams did not diminish. She is also excellent at tinkering with technology. And she happens to be a lesbian.

She would be Makina if she also sang... not really. She does the villain-style look better (and LARPs excellent villains).

Told you, nobody was going to defend the 2016 Ghostbusters movie.

Ranka doesn't meet any of the four criteria to be a Creator's Pet though.

Out of idle curiosity, I pulled my notes on Ranka and ran her through the Mary Sue litmus test.  She scored a 16, which is a low probability of being a Mary Sue.  She racked up most of her points in relationships, since her friends are all incredibly good looking and she ticked half the checkboxes for traumatic past and family trouble.

Mikumo, for the sake of comparison, scored a 90.  On a scale where 30 is considered a high probability of being a Mary Sue and anything over 50 is a terrible Mary Sue.

We do seem to have different readings of Ranka. I ran the same test for her and ended up with 35. But while I did not test, I do agree Mikumo would score higher.

Yeah, that scene hit a little closer to home than it should of (especially the movie version).

Nao (Reina) is the only odd ball from what I've seen since she matches close to Kiyono (Kaname) in past experience, just a few years later.

On a side note I think Nozumi slowly turned into Makina after the show given her new hobby as a bike otaku and her regular gig of hosting the Macross model livestream along side KENN (Bogue).

Yes. The movie version is what I was thinking of. "Friends in high places" is the phrase about Mikumo in the subtitled version I have.

As for Nozumi turning into Makina. I can't help asking if she is, er, developing Makina's single most distinctive characteristic... (Previously known in this franchise as hopes and dreams). The bike otaku part does sound like nailing it, though :)

    @Saruta

There isn't much more other then she was an unknown that had a voice that hits like a truck.

But like Mikumo she didn't do a general audition and was just brought in. Walkure is her first gig (same for Minori and Nozumi).

As for history you can add a lack of it for JUNNA, at least via Twitter, her account was opened up just prior to the Walkure announcement. From what I can see all her social media started up around that time. At least without going into stalker territory.

Also if your looking for more of her work I suggest grabbing her newest album 17 Sai ga Utsukushii Nante, Dare ga Itta. it has a good selection of her post Walkure work minus her first album Vai! Ya! Vai!, which was pretty good to start.

Thanks! I did not know she was "just brought in" and did ont go through the same auditions that got us Freyja. That scene in the movie, with "friends in high places" mentioned, definitely has a different feeling now.

(Might steal this for a story plot. Not a fanfic, "legally distinct". The best way to hide an android/clone: have her play one on TV).

  6. Okay, I did a duck-and-cover for Ghostbusters, but the shootout started anyway for Gundam...

Anyway I don't think we have to go that far for creator's pet characters. Ranka Lee. The creator did know to balance it with not letting her ever win the triangle, but everything else... I tried her on some Mary Sue test quiz once, she passed with flying colours.

  7. Surprised there is no AKB0048 thread - or I just failed to find it?

Decided to try watching it, because of the idea that a sci fi idol series with mecha might be good, it's just that Delta botched it. Also Kawamori. Am thru episode 1.

Music is mediocre-to-nice so far - makes Walkure sound real good in comparison. I do understand that was the part Kawamori had zero control over.

Planet "Lancastar" (that would be "Rankastar" in Western Macrossy parlance) and the kira sign done by AKB in concert. Sounds like Kawamori winking to Macross fans, who of course were expected in the audience.

And hey presto - character development. In the first episode, even. Among extras, too (Nagisa's mom).

The premise is silly but the franchise handles it with a firm "don't take this seriously". The end of episode 1 intentionally goes over-the-top unrealistic, I think they did it to make people stop trying to pick holes. "What do you mean 'what's the reason for the entertainment ban', when we have young teen girls pulling a friend into a plane during takeoff and the takeoff proceeds". I wonder if this scene was Kawamori's idea - he's an aviation specialist, so might have designed this specially to be unrealistic.

  8. A mention of the last Ghostbusters movie means an impending flaming shootout, and it appears that some of the Gundams have the same property. Duck and cover so.

Macross Delta's sh*tty handling of Walkure could be called a genuine affront to the real idol group, being promoted through an anime series where four-fifths of the group are characters so generic you can practically see the barcodes.

I'd dispute this definition. Each of the characters (at least in Walkure) have potential, they are not bland by nature. It's just that the potential is never realized. We just get a few strokes where entire storylines would work.

Mikumo. A powerful voice... who does not even know where she came from, and ends up finding that out from the enemy.

Kaname. A *failed* conventional singer who gets a second lease on a stage life because of fold receptors, then gets sidelined there by Mikumo, while staying a team leader and caring for the group (even Mikumo) intensely. Also the only one able to see behind Messer's stern facade.

Reina. Someone who knew only the digital world and never had an idea about how to sing and how to love - until ensountering Mikumo and Makina.

Makina. Torn between actually enjoying being cute, a proud engineering heritage, and being an actual lesbian. Closest to bland of them all, possibly, but "it's not the same without her" for all the others - something they perhaps wanted to show by getting Makina wounded, but failed.

Freyja... well she's pretty much the only character to get development in canon. Two versions of it, though more in the series of course. Creator's pet? As for the others, it's almost like someone *tried* to write out proper characters, then got loads of strokes of the axe?

Guess what? I do like your story suggestion for me to start caring for the characters again. And I'm pretty sure they can fit it along with Valkyrie battle actions within 26 episodes. As long that they write it properly and strategically per episodes. ^_^

They should just hire fans to write. SDFM-1982 was full of homages to Star Trek. Star Trek did just that and, well, survived. Gundam, the competitor of old, did it too.

    https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/RunningTheAsylum

P.S. And I should probably get over the aversion to way-too-much-commerce and watch AKB0048. It's Kawamori's take on a sci fi idol show after all, and even some of the premise seems to reference Macross.

  10. I guess what I want to say is... if they really want to do idol genre they should actually do idol genre. Taking cues from the best, like Love Live. But with a sci fi slant. It would not be classic Macross but I'd watch that.

I'd want to see the full angst of Mikumo realizing she is a clone. I'd want to see Freyja staying by her side through the worst of it and their relationship developing beyond the hints in series and movie. Darnit, demote Mirage to extra already (she's halfway there) and make the mandatory triangle Hayate-Freyja-Mikumo, that would actually be a proper triangle, not a pretend one. I'd want to see established relationship niceties between Makina and Reina (and I said niceties not lewdities), and Makina giving another go to her engineering dreams and perhaps they'd build something flying together, with Reina doing the AI, or perhaps they try but fail because something. I'd want to see Kaname going through hope and then grief and then picked up by the girls actually caring about her even while they sort their couple stuff.

Yes, none of this is "macross", well so what.

With no reasonable expectation of a coherent plot, all we can look forward to there is fifty pages of Walkure fanboys gushing about the latest fanservice-y promotional art of "waifus" who got no character development.

But who *needs* a waifu with no character development? Mere anime boob can already be had on r**e34 in any shape or form. Good "selection of waifu" animes, including idol ones, actually make a point of developing the characters.

I do like how Mikumo sings. though. Or should I really say, I do like how JUNNA sings. Unlike the Frontier singers, who, I think, lose some of their power when not coupled with Yoko Kanno, JUNNA holds her level outside Macross for all I know (though I only saw a couple of works - would want more!)

  12. Finally watched the movie. It has some good scenes, notably Messer's final battle. Also, MUCH more balanced mecha action. not just scissors. Also, some of the movie just works very well to the music (basically turns into a music video, in an obvious homage to Frontier movies). Speaking of homages, hearing Oboeteimasuka in the original Protoculture is a nice twist!

Sadly, the writing still disappoints. I really hoped they'd expand on Mikumo as a character. They did to a small degree but really, I wanted more. That moment in the series when she turned out to be an able fighter - how, why? Movie cuts it.

We did not learn who Lady M was - but that was the expected outcome. Yet I really hoped for more character development of the Walkure, if they wanted to make a movie about the Walkure. There was *some*. But it's in brief broad strokes, as if the authors were writing a short story, not a full length movie. And so it got a bit "bog-standard idol" with teamwork, caring for each other and for those who listen.

Nice idea with the massive grief that gets into the system once you try to unite all minds. I think I saw this in a fan work after the series, though. Writers mighjt have got this independently - or nicked it. Anyway. it's actually nice, and explains why Protoculture itself abandoned the use of this system. So yes. they actually did a decent job at worldbuilding... Also kudos for making Makina/Reina clear canon and giving a really strong hint at Keith/Roid.

Pity about the character development. This just kills the fun. I can understand showing more Walkure skin (did nothing for me but I'm older than the target audience). They should have shown more of Walkure under that skin. All of them, but especially Mikumo. You find out you're artificial and?.. It's a huge theme actually...

  13. I wonder what her role would be if a live-action Macross were to happen someday. She obviously can't play a 15 year old on screen. And the fandom might not take to a Minmay completely divorced from Mari - look how Star Trek had to introduce a new Spock gradually. Copying Star Trek directly, while Minmay Prime sounds cool, is bad form and too reminiscent of Robotech, but would they perhaps have older!Minmay as the narrator?

Well you can hear what their older singing voices would sound like by listening to the contemporary performances of their singing talents (Sheryl and Ranka likely wouldn't sound too different since it hasn't been that long and May'n and Megumi still sound pretty much the same, Fukuyama's (Basara) voice does sound a bit older though, as I'm sure Mari's does despite that she isn't that old really herself). However I know you want it in the context of a Macross story. I just think such a thing would be too much of a contrived story when the reunion concerts do most of that anyway. I'd prefer continued fresh storytelling (perhaps this time with some effort put into the writing, heh).

Mari's work is indeed available and it's total headcanon for me that some of these songs are "older Minmay". There is one that, to me, seems like Minmay wrote the lyrics too - though Mari would probably not like this reading; it is called "Survivor". (Sadly I can't find a working link online now).

And there actually is a recent release of a Sheryl song. I hope they did mean that inworld it is a release from the Delta timeframe. A brief war in a distant part of the Galaxy and a loss of a NUNS fleet would not have interrupted Sheryl's career.

And yes, "Generations" stories can get contrived (as we know from the actual Star Trek Generations movie, "preserve Kirk in VR stasis just so he can meet Picard then get killed off anyway"). I wonder however - why did they put the "signal from Megaroad" quip in Delta if they are not planning a Generations movie/series?

I guess my own desire would be to see, not so much more of their *story* (it is likely their story is told), as the characters themselves - what kind of people they became in the later years. A Macross 30 type setting is grand in itself, but where M30 goes wrong for me (other than me not being able to see it for lack of a PS3) is the time travel angle. I would prefer to "meet" Minmay and Misa as different but majestic older women (not unlike Milia in M7); Basara as a middle-aged rocker and seasoned space traveler (Dynamite does that to a degree, though); Sheryl as an established star who learned to be truly independent and manages her own team with an iron fist; Ranka as an actual adult, etc. It's okay if they appear as auxiliaries to the mission of the new main characters.

From what I know of M30, the singer I'd believe in and appreciate the most in that version (if I had a PS3) is actually Sharon Apple; time travel vs. computer repair would not affect her all that much, she would not have changed from 20 years of experience because she was turned off, and her motivation in M30 sounds just right. Try to fix everything, and screw the consequences; that's what she would do.

  15. I am probably in a minority at this point but I still want a Generations thing. The one that seemed to be set up with the "signal from Megaroad" bit.

If the 35th anniversary movie is that, I'm gonna be happy. A Generations series would probably be harder to craft but if they do it, fine too.

Time might be running out - just how many more years will Mari Iijima be able to sing and voice-act? And you can't have Generations without Minmay, and you can't really have a different Minmay either.

I'd prefer to get some Basara too but I realize this might be less likely... and hopes for any link to the Sharon Apple plot are even less likely, despite the obvious sequel hook at the end of Plus (chip preserved).

Please Excuse me if the answer to this is obvious. I clicked through all the pages of this thread and searched 'Hikaru' on each... Its 1:30am..

So it seems that we are never getting a chronological direct sequel to Macross TV Where it covers what happens to the fleet with Hikaru, Misa, and the rest.  (according to Kawamori & Co?)

Has anyone ever attempted a fan-fiction to cover this gap? Anything good? I'm looking for Macross, not Robotech.  This is a story I have wanted to read since 1985.

    Thanks for any Info!!!

    Here's something I found for you: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/660155/1/The-Legend-of-Megaroad

It is a pre-Frontier work and probably also pre-Zero (Zero was released at the time this was already being published). I did not read through it personbaly as it is outright huge at 180k words. But the topic is the one you asked for.

(EDIT: I am reading it and it is rather well-written. Among other things, Frontier-style fold weapons are described. In a 2002 fanfic).

My own "Macer sonata" does have a version of the fate of the Megaroad, but at present only exists in Russian. I am hoping to write an expanded version in English eventually.

  17. I want the people who made to give an apology to us.

I know it's wicked late, but i have a few complaints about this episode. First off, how the hell did Frejya not get hit by, not one, but the flaming wreckage of TWO Lil'Drakkens?

I think that it's somewhat useless to ask why all of the Walkure survived despite death flags all over Mikumo. They survived because of RL Walkure concerts.

  18. A few short questions unrelated to each other:

    - What is the Zentradi word for "freedom", if known?

    - Who wrote the lyrics for Ikenai Borderline and did this person write any other songs in Delta or otherwise, if known?

    - And we still don't know who, or how, did the remove piloting for those VFs that saved Hayate, Mirage and Freyja

    EDIT: another unrelated question:

    - Could anyone share the OFFICIAL kanji lyrics for Ikenai Borderline? As in something published on a CD cover, or something. I am told that the exact intended meaning of "icchau kamo ne" depends on how they spelled it (kanji or kana).
